The story according to KISS back in the day was during the recording of this record, they heard that the biggest artist of the day (Brooks) was a huge KISS fan. So Gene and Paul reached out to see if he was interested which was an immediate "yes" under one condition, Garth asked if KISS would record the track with him. It was the one track they played on and according to Gene, they recorded it in 2 takes, using the first and said that Brooks was one of the most respectful, talented and well prepared musicians he's ever worked with and this track was one of his favorite recording sessions ever. I'm a fan of music, with Rock as my primary favorite but we all have to realize that rock and country are rooted in blues and are just variations of the same theme, especially now.
The truth of Hard Luck Woman, which appears on Kiss' album Rock and Roll Over - from 1976. Garth wasn't even a blip on the music scene at the time, but Garth LOVED the band, and sang it on a country tribute album to Kiss in the 1990's. As the story goes, it was originally written by Paul Stanley as a possible track for Rod Stewart, with his gravely voice in mind. Peter Criss said, "What am I, chopped liver?!" And considering the success of the ballad "Beth", Kiss decided to keep it for themselves as a follow-up.
Wow...hearing this so many years later the evidence is clear: Garth really nailed the vocal. Great song! Back when Alive II came out I listened to that version over and over and over again. It's just "one of those songs" that is simply awesome.
KISS was a huge influence on Garth. Thats one of the reasons why his live shows are freaking awesome. This is one of the best KISS songs ever and Peter Criss is perfect on it. The studio version of this is flawless and Garth does it big time justice. Love it!
I'm not a country fan but that was cool! I was a Garth Brooks fan when I was about 4. When I got older I got into rock and metal only. I still respect Garth Brooks especially when he sang with KISS!
I love how Brooks seems genuinely happy to sing this version, although he doesn´t seem comfortable without a jumbo guitar in front of him. I read once that he loved Kiss so much he wanted to make a show as big as they did, only country styled, lol...
This is ace!!! I like how Garth said he'd do the song if KISS backed him up. You'd never thin of Garth Brooks as a KISS fan, but he is a huge KISS fan.
I always knew Garth Brooks! Was a rock and roll lover hiding behind the country industry! But hey he's been blessed to be able to sing progressive rock and Country! Some artist can't do that! My hats off to your books!
I've heard and seen many artist/bands cover this tune studio and live, and no one, absolutely no one, touches Peter Criss' voice. But, I truly seeing how much love has been given to this tune. All these artists rock. R&R people!
stan yarbrough I SO agree with you! I wish Peter would have had the vocals on a BUNCH of KISS songs -- but this song sounds like it was written for someone like Garth :) {P.S. -- for the record, I'm not even a big Garth Brooks fan -- the only cd I have of his is the Chris Gaines one :P}
stan yarbrough I so agree with you. I'm currently reading Peters' book,"Make Up To Break Up" and it's just astonishing how hard he got burned by Gene and Paul. Peters voice is absolutely essential when listening to this song. No one ever did it better!
Amuz3d2Deth Agree! Paul and Peter should have held down all the vocals on their tunes. I think Peter is a fantastic human being, and I too believe Gene and Paul treated him so unfairly. I bet the book is a good read. would like to read one day soon.
Steve Mills Steve I read that and I was blown away that Rod turned it down. Not sure why, unless he thought that KISS may release it as well and he didn't want the competition. not sure. do you know what happened. would love to know the story. thanx Steve
This is one of their best songs. Compositionally it flows, the changes work together, and it's complete. So many of their songs sound like pieces of separate songs put together, and they just don't work.

Man...I'm no fan of new country music - (a genre that for a period in the late 80's and early 90's, seemed to be being led by Garth Brooks himself) - but I am a fan of old country and western tunes. That said, I can't deny that Garth Brooks has quite a singing voice on him! The man really does have some enviable pipes!
BluesLicks101 Absolutely. It's too bad the Miles Goodwyn has decided to retire from the music business. But, I recently heard that April Wine is going to perform a music fest(Brampton?) in Canada. I don't know if he had a change of heart or not.
