      Incase you haven't heard, you can harvest a handcuff key from a bic lighter. I tested this myself, and to my surprise, worked. The shaft that runs down the center is what becomes the key, it just takes a little filing and being gentle as you open the cuffs. It is st plastic after all.

      Hey, if you go to most outdoors shops you can buy really big, thick ferrocerium rods (the flint in a lighter) and if you heat them up with say a blow torch and throw them its way cooler

      My friends and I use to look for those same cheap lighters while we roamed the neighborhoods to do exactly this. The lighter must be almost out of liquid butane and this was during summer days in Texas I assume the heat from the sun and the lack of pressure allowed some of the Butane to change to gas inside the lighter instead of only having liquid. When full of liquid it has to change states of matter before it can be lit by the spark ( the spark is not reliable ) also the escaping liquid will become very cold due rapid expansion from the pressure change. And cause water in the air to form in to a liquid, and maybe even solid ice. When I was older I bought 5 brand new lighters just to do this, Thinking it being full, would make the fireball bigger I was wrong.

    Dear Rogues:
    I'm not gonna say you're doing it wrong, because you basically have the technique down pat. However, I have done this myself and gotten a nice little fireball, so I have some tips:
    1) Every lighter I managed to explode, with fire and all, was not new, some of the butane had been used prior to popping it.
    2) When throwing it, I found that if you kept the lighter lit for a brief period of time beforehand (nothing ridiculous like getting it to start melting, just getting the lighter itself to heat up a bit, say 10-12 seconds max) it would more reliably give a nice fiery cloud, which I am guessing with my limited knowledge of thermodynamics was because the combination of the pre-existing heat and the spark of impact made it easier to reach the flash point of the butane cloud, and finally
    3) When it worked, it was usually in a rougher surface than the concrete slab you used, ie the asphalt of a street or parking lot, maybe because...more friction on impact? Not sure on that one.
    Anyway, much love regardless from Oklahoma, would be interested to see some more thorough testing with both the lighters and ferrocerium rods with the ideas I mentioned! :)

      Considering they managed to put out an open flame I don't think 2 and 3 really matters. I think 1 is where it's at. In a school yard scenario you wouldn't go to the store and buy a new lighter and throw that to the ground, you would have an old or discarded lighter. My guess is that it probably works best with a spent lighter with just a tiny bit of fuel so the whole thing can aerosolize (I'm pretty sure that's a word). As you said, when it works it's a little fireball, and a whole lighters worth of fuel would be a pretty sizeable fireball.

    You actually need to snap off the silver thing until you find a small white wheel. Attached to that you'll find the flame adjuster still connected. Just lift it up and move it to the right so that you can adjust the wheel to allow more gas out. It will spit out fuel. Which you light with a second lighter. Then when you throw it there will be a strong flame to ignite the gas. Also helps to do it in a sheltered place with no wind.

    I think the problem is that the lighters are full of butane. Everytime I have exploded a lighter by throwing it at the ground it was always a lighter that was out of fuel. That's the reason I would be smashing the lighter in the first place😂 I think the full lighter is releasing so much butane it doesn't have a chance to mix with air and ignite.

    When I was younger and walking around, any time we found a discarded lighter around, we would do this. The thing we did different, was to light the lighter before we threw it down. It worked better if you had one of them with the valve you could tweak the flame up and down. We would do a method where you can bypass how far you can heighten the flame, then light and throw. Sure you can find info on how to do that, if you don't already know. Still, it wasn't a 100% guarantee it will ignite and the explosion isn't that large.

    As a commenter, I feel like I'm getting mixed messages.
    Also, my best guess as to what's happening is that the spark (on the off chance a spark forms) is being created and dying out just before the butane is released, combined with the fact that its too close to the cloud of butane, so that the butane meets the spark before the right ratio of oxygen can form for combustion.
    I.E., bad spark timing combined with too rich of a fuel mixture at the spark's location.

    • @T19R0N
      @T19R0N 5 років тому +4

      While the spark is probably a very unreliable igniter, it's also an issue of the temperature of the gas being too low to ignite. Since the gas expands so quickly it cools down by a lot.
      Which is how the cloud was able to extinguish the burning candle without catching fire.

    • @ComradePhoenix

      @@c1h2r3i4s56987 Absolutely incorrect, outside of some very extreme conditions.
      Fire (i.e., combustion) is a reaction where a given substance is rapidly exothermically oxidized (oxygen is the primary method of doing this, but more electronegative gases such as Fluorine and Chlorine will also do it).
      Since the prevalence of gaseous Chlorine and Fluorine in the atmosphere is stupidly low, barring something like chemical warfare or an industrial accident, outside of those two conditions, every fire you will encounter will be oxidized by oxygen (hence the term). There's some other even more exotic ways of oxidizing a fuel, but they're even more uncommon than Cl and F.
      Suffice it to say, oxygen is not a fuel, it is an oxidant. And if you find yourself encountering a fire being oxidized by something other than oxygen, you should either be running away EXTREMELY fast, or praying to whatever higher power you believe in (of course, that's good advice for a lot of oxygen fires as well).

  • @mheermance

    I think the problem is that when the lighter ruptures, the puff is pure butane, and not mixed with oxygen from the air. A cloud of pure butane could actually extinguish any flames initiated by an initial spark, or the candle as seen at 6:55. Also, I approve of the "Spoon!" war cry.

    Based on that accidental encounter, I'm going to say it's the same problem you faced with the potato gun - the fuel air mixture. A lot of commenters have said that it's an issue with the amount of fuel coming out, claiming it worked better with half-empty lighters.

    I remember doing this as a kid in Australia around 15 years ago and while it wasn't all the time we definitely got fiery explosions. I tried it a few years later, and I have a sneaking suspicious that maybe some sort of safety lighter was introduced that made this harder to do, because I could never replicate it either. We also used to use the lighters first a little bit, cause fire is fun, and a few other comments have mentioned doing this too. In fact, I distinctly recall us doing this multiple times with lighters we'd find in the street, which we'd just pick up and huck at the ground to see what happens.

    The butane in the lighter is compressed, so when the plastic cracks and the butane escapes, it rapidly expands. That rapid expansion causes the gas to cool down a lot, and probably makes it too cold to ignite!

    Only works with those crappy disposable lighters. Light the lighter, hold it lit for a bit, throw while lit. Essentially, you do not let off on the flame until the moment it would leave your hand. I've done this a bunch of times. Not 100% success rate of course, but pretty often.
    Note: the lighters I had thrown to explode were rigged as in. if you take the metal cover off the lighter. you can mess with the flame adjustment and ramp up how big the flame is, then replace metal cover. Light it and throw all the same.

    This is a thing that I did when I was a kid, but I also remember that we made sort of a cannon out of carbid, a PVC pipe, a lighter/candle, water and something like a piece of wood with a LOT of hot glue.
    Step 1:Drill a whole on the lower side of the PVC
    Step2:Take a piece of wood and jam it as much as possible in the bottom of the PVC with a hammer and put hot glue everywhere.
    Step 3:Take the carbid, put it in the chamber of you make-shift cannon put water(preferably hot water) in with the chamber of the cannon
    Step 4: Take the cannon put it on its side with the hole facing you, resting on like a 5 foot log or some boxes
    Step 5: Wait 5 seconds and put the lighter like 1 cm from the whole, thats when you hear BOOM
    Repeat if you want to continue with shooting, REMEMBER if black smoke is coming out of the pipe and when you try to fire it a big flame comes up that means that you have to reset the cannon and try again, the reason for that is when the water hits the carbid it can come up to such a temperature that it starts to burn, you can use the same piece of carbid like 5 times, but remember to put water in every 2 shots.
    If you see this comment then please make a video about it:)

    Everytime when we used this method in my area, we also used rubber bands. So, you start the lighter, while lever for gas is pressed and it burns, rubber band is put over it (another part of rubber band goes over bottom of lighter) and then you throw it so it lands on bottom part. It ignites immediately with nice large fireball. Ratio of success with this kind of method is 4/5.

    You have to remember as the butane escapes and turns from liquid to gas it sucks in heat energy making it's surroundings very cold. Fire needs heat to happen so a cold environment prevents ignition and could even put out your candle.

    If you take the cover off and break the lever off. You can then adjust the flame all the way up until it starts to spew. Then using another lighter you can ignite it and throw it and it will keep burning for a long time, because once the butane runs out the plastic will catch on fire.

    You guys should try this again, but empty the lighters to about 20% of their capacity (or even less).
    Since you're throwing these full, the expanding butane pushes air (and thus, oxygen) away, and you will not get it to light up.
    Also, try removing the metalic shield, it helps with getting a spark more consistently.

  • @colineire9162
    @colineire9162 5 років тому

    The latent heat of the butane vaporization keeps it below the flash point. It can be done but you need to have used the lighter a bit so that its not all liquid. The small amount of butane in the gas phase of a somewhat used lighter will ignite and set the rest off.

  • @CDRaff
    @CDRaff 5 років тому

    I've had a lighter explode throwing it down one time. I tried it again dozens of times, but never got it to happen after that one time. It was pretty cool when it happened though.
    Also as a Lock Picking Lawyer fan I can fully admit we can be very obnoxious at times. He can make stuff look too easy sometimes because his videos are short and concise, but he obviously does a ton of prep work so that he doesn't have failures on camera. The point of watching Modern Rogue is to experiance those failures though.
    On the same note you guys should do a collab on lock picking with one of the bigger locksmith UA-cams. It is actually a really fun and fulfilling hobby and it is a great skill if the shit ever hits the fan.

  • @brandonbarr6906

    Hydrocarbons have a measurable flammability limit. I think the concentration of butane here is too much to explode upon breaking. It also needs to have enough oxidizer (Oxygen from air here) to have a flame front. The pressure of liquid butane here is just breaking the plastic as it exits.
