It's Memorial Day weekend, so you already know what it is! That's right, a good old fashioned cookout. Grab the kids, grab the psyonic wildebeest carcass, invite over all the relatives! No need to lye, it's just some basic ingredients, and everybody's dying to get a taste.

Short version: Really, just don't do this, ever. Lye can permanently blind you VERY easily. I'm a chemist. I'm glad to see them using lots of safety equipment and I'm sure they did their research, but the average viewer might not take sufficient precautions.
LONG Version Follows: Here are some dangers/safety procedures for NaOH (Sodium Hydroxide or lye).
Lye takes a lot of rinsing to get off. It has a soapy feel to it. You know how hard it is to rinse off bleach completely? Lye is almost as bad.
Don't mess around with lye while alone. In the event of an accident, you might not be able to do what needs to be done in order to save yourself from serious harm, especially if the lye gets in your eyes and blinds you, preventing you from being able to find and use your safety equipment. Make sure the other person knows what to do besides just calling 911 because if you have to wait for an ambulance, you might suffer horrific damage while you wait.
EYE PROTECTION: Of course lye can damage you anywhere it touches you, but the BIGGEST danger is eye damage. Wear goggles or a full face shield to protect your eyes. In my opinion, goggles are superior eye protection to a full face shield. Safety glasses are NOT good enough! With safety glasses, lye solution can EASILY get around the edges of the glasses and get in your eyes.
If lye gets in your eyes, the pain will force your eyes to squint shut. You will NOT be able to open your eyes without prying them open with your fingers. It's an uncontrollable physical reaction. An eye rinsing method that requires you to use both hands to operate while somehow opening your eye with willpower alone will NOT work.
Do NOT wear contacts (even under goggles or a face shield). If you get concentrated lye solution in your eyes while wearing contacts, you're probably going to need a cornea transplant at the very least. The lye will get under the contact and dissolve your corneas. The contacts will be almost impossible to remove with your eye squinting shut from the pain. At the very worst, no doctor in the world will be able to repair the damage and you will be permanently blind in that eye. Wear regular glasses under your goggles or face shield, NOT contact lenses. You don't have regular glasses? STAY AWAY FROM LYE THEN.
If lye solution gets in your eyes, you have seconds (at most) to get it rinsed out before taking damage . With hot lye solution, damage may be instant. You need to have a way of rinsing out your eyes with lots of water QUICKLY while blind. If you're using a garden hose, go ahead beforehand and adjust it to a safe setting to use on your eyes so you don't hose your eyeball out of its socket. Don't think, "Oh, the sink is right over there. I'll use it if I get anything in my eye." Can you find the sink while blind? Can you find it in a few seconds? Are you going to have to cup your hand with a little water at a time and splash your eye while trying to hold it open with the fingers of the other hand? The same goes for the hose. Will you have to find it blind with your hands and go hand over hand to the spigot to turn it on? You'll be permanently blind long before then.
You need a LOT of water FAST, but in a gentle stream. Buy something like this and practice using it ahead of time: www.amazon.com/Eye-Wash-Bottle-16-Each/dp/B0002DLB3U Or better yet, have a permanent eye-wash station like this: www.eyewashdirect.com/acorn-s0430-eye-wash-station-c2610302 With the permanent station, when you hit the paddle, the water starts flowing, the lids pop off, and you put your face down into the stream. The water keeps flowing so you have both hands free to pry open a contaminated eye. Again, practice using it.
Of course you should also be using rubber gloves and a rubber apron or lab coat or protective suit. If you get lye solution (especially hot solution) on your body in an area not protected by a rubber apron or suit, remove that piece of clothing immediately. Is the clothing below that soaked? Remove it as well. Get naked if you have to. It's better to get naked fast and get washed off quickly than to suffer permanent damage even if 50 people are watching you get naked. Of course you should have some means of rinsing yourself off VERY well and VERY quickly. Dabs of water from the sink are not good enough. You need a shower - ideally a safety shower - which compared to a regular shower is like comparing a fire hose to a garden hose. Jumping in a pool with your clothes on would actually be a pretty good method if you have a pool. Then get undressed underwater.
Lab coats are designed to slow down and minimize penetration by harmful substances, but they are not waterproof. If you get lye solution on your lab coat, take that coat off! Make sure it didn't go through the coat! If it did go through, keep removing clothing until you find dry clothing or you're naked! And if it went all the way through to your skin, rinse it off fast!
If you get lye on your lye-proof rubber apron or gloves or suit or whatever, rinse that off too, being careful not to spread it somewhere less protected. If you leave the lye on your gloves or apron, it may end up getting transferred from there to somewhere else more vulnerable like your face or to a countertop that you'll touch later while not protected.
After your lye experiment, clean your work area thoroughly while wearing proper protective gear.
HOT LYE: Lye heats up when it dissolves in water. It can get hot enough to boil VIOLENTLY. When it boils, it can spatter and splash even if you're being very careful not to spill it. If you think, "I don't have to wear goggles because I'm being really careful not to spill any lye!" and you mix it with water and it boils, it can splash hot lye solution several feet away. Hot lye solution dissolves flesh better than room temperature lye solution. Boiling lye solution releases fumes you shouldn't be breathing. It's better not to boil the lye at all, but you should still be in a VERY well ventilated area. Work under a fume hood (not an oven hood) or do your experiment outside with a strong fan blowing away from you. A breathing mask might be a good idea as well.
    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fume_hood
Boiling lye solution can shatter glassware, especially glassware not intended for laboratory use. When this happens, hot lye solution can splatter all over the place. As noted in the video, lye reacts with aluminum. Use stainless steel or lab-grade glassware or ceramic containers. Really, lye reacts to a certain extent even with stainless steel, but the reaction is minimal.

they were not even the correct respirators so all they were really doing is cutting down on the smell. One of them was just a 3M particulate mask and is not much better than a basic dust filter mask. Granted you can change the filters used and they do make a good seal so if they did put the correct filters in the masks than they would be fine but ya they took them off way to much and too close to the pot at that.

As someone who works with lye on a semi regular basis to make soaps, when they lit the fire before adding the Sodium Hydroxide, I paused the video just to say: this is gonna be fun, glad they're wearing suits. When lye is added to water, it produces an exothermic reaction, the water will heat to a near boil *ON IT'S OWN*. Adding it to already boiling water is dangerous as hell.
If it were me, I'd add the water first, then the lye, wait for the lye/water mix to cool down, gingerly add my "meat", and then begin warming it up.
As far as the masks/no masks go. From what I've researched, the gas emitted from mixing the lye/water isn't lethal, but it is noxious as hell and will take your breath away. I wouldn't want to breath it regardless.
@ 8:24 - Ahh, soaponification, whether they know it or not, they are making soap (awful and slimy with rotten meat smell, but soap nonetheless). It will go through several stages, the bubbling froth is one of the stages of making soap., then it will go to an applesauce stage, then look like mashed potatoes, then it will start burning if they continue to heat it. It's a bad enough smell with the oils I use, I couldn't imagine what it would be like with rotten meat.

    • @lloydevans2900
      @lloydevans2900 6 років тому +4

If you think alkaline fumes can't be choking and acrid, you've clearly never made up a concentrated solution of strong alkali. When you add lye to water, the simple act of dissolving it is enough on its own to heat the solution up. Even if you start with freezing cold water, it is still possible to dissolve enough lye to reach boiling point, without adding heat from any other source. Which is why you always add lye to water, ideally slowly, with good mixing.
If you do it the other way round, by pouring water into a bucket of solid lye pellets, the first bits of water to make contact and mix will rapidly boil. This can be violent, throwing steam, lye and boiling hot lye solution around the place. The same rule applies to concentrated acids - especially sulfuric acid, which has a similar heating effect when dissolved in water.
However, even if you are careful and do everything properly, the solution will still get hot. It doesn't have to reach boiling point to become really nasty though. A hot lye solution isn't so pervasively acrid as some acids can be, but it can still be bad enough. Until it cools down, the fumes given off by a hot lye solution are instantly cough-inducing if you get too close.

    • @ashwoke

ArmyBoy057 wouldn’t molten anything eat through glass?

    • @lloydevans2900
      @lloydevans2900 5 років тому +1

Not really - it would depend on temperature. Glass can easily hold molten lead, for example, since lead melts around 330 degrees C. But it needs at least twice that temperature to melt the glass itself. Pure sodium hydroxide granules or pellets will melt around 320 degrees C, so the temperature alone is not enough to melt the glass. Molten sodium hydroxide eats through the glass by dissolving it, like how hot water can eat through a sugar cube, even though it is nowhere near hot enough to melt the sugar.

As a soap maker who uses lye on a regular basis, so much was done incorrectly. You didn't need fire or heat because Caustic Soda boils when it comes in contact with water. You also need distilled water because the chemicals used to purify water in our water systems can react with lye. NEVER treat a lye burn with vinegar. Use a steady rinse of cold water for 15-30 mins to rinse the lye out of the skin otherwise it will continue to eat through your skin and you will need to seek medical attention. You didn't even really need water to do this. You could have just applied the Caustic Soda onto the meat and it would've eaten through it. PLEASE BE CAREFUL WITH CAUSTIC SODA! Its not a toy.

Bases are generally better are dissolving organic material (ie flesh) and acids are usually better at inorganic. Obviously both are still dangerous and there are exceptions to every rule but, if like in this, you are on site and want to put something in the mix this will generally tell you what won't melt/will melt.

They put one of the bodies into metal barrel with lye and water and they dropped it from bridge into dam. After almost 4 years police lifted those barrels and there were still parts of bodies but it was very hard to indetifie indentity of that murdered person. Just a note....that one barrel with lye almost exploded when they traveled on their way to dam, because chemical reaction heated and also inflated this barrel.

The initial treatment in the management of almost all topical chemical burns is extensive irrigation with water. What they are telling you about "neutralizing with vinegar" is completely wrong. Do not play chemist. The only exceptions which you do not use water at first is dry lime, which should be brushed off first, elemental metals that react with water, and phenols.

    • @MrBradshawbenjamin

They did very very briefly reference the MSDS that said to flush with water but if it gets on your skin and not in your eyes, I would bet that after flushing with water for a few seconds applying vinegar would neutralize it faster than water would, but of course lye mixing with vinegar is exothermic and applying vinegar before any water might heat your skin up enough to burn.

We made lye soap in elementary school. Well, the teachers did and we all stood around the big pot and watched and took home the soap. This was 30 years ago though. Teaching 8 year olds how to make lye soap was apparently not thought of as all that dangerous back then. They even taught us how to make the lye from wood ashes. I didn't fully understand the danger of lye until I was much older.

Kaeldare, well, up until maybe as late as the 60s it was still perfectly normal to make soap at home. My grandma did it for quite some time and I forget, but possibly even taught my mom.
That was of course more than 30 years ago, but it may have still been a bit of home science or practical home learning still when you were in school.
These days, I didn't get to have fun with sulfuric acid until the end of high school, and even then I had to convince my teacher. Otherwise it wouldn't have been until college. They're pretty safe nowadays.
