      The bit for the ad was cool but you guys need to rethink being sponsored by Raid. Take a look at their reviews on the app store. More than half of them talk about how it's pay to win and how predatory the microtransactions are. They literally have a paywall for you to be able to progress past a certain point.

      7:33 I graduated my chem class around a month ago, the color difference is due to concentration of the acid, and concentration of other contaminants.
      My class and I did a lab working with acids, and we made muriatic (Hydrochloric acid(stomach)) acid crystals, then reconstituted them and diluted them to avoid danger.
      The crystals were tan in color due to some contamination that we added in one of the trials.
      (Edit 1)
      The “fumpyness” in the white fluffy cotton is due to better nitration, and washing (theoretically).
      My advice: try longer nitrations, more baking soda bathes (separated by more water bathes (use distilled for best results ( new water each time))), and then let it dry under more controlled conditions.
      Other than that: TheKingOfRandom released a video a few years ago on several forms of nitrocellulose, I recommend checking it out.

    Chemist in a previous life here:
    1. Cover the bowl when you leave it to nitrate. You'll lose water to evaporation, and your side products can crystallize... and apparently turn green.
    2. Rinse your final product ad nauseum. You don't want anything but the nitrocellulose. Any other compounds left over will leave a residue when burning. You've done well if the final cotton is white and there's no evidence it ever existed when you burn it.
    3. FLUFF IT UP. Even though it's more flammable than the default cotton, it's still just a fuel. You need a fuel-air mixture to burn quickly.
    edit: 4. Don't leave it to dry in the sunshine. Just in case you did the preparation well, there's a tiny chance you'll come back to an empty sheet of aluminum.

      @ChrisJ-mf7cj 4 роки тому +1

      Does a longer nitrate time matter to engage a longer or fiercer burn, or does it hit a simple saturation point and whatever’s leftover is just lost to waste?

    • @InfernalBanana
      @InfernalBanana 4 роки тому +2

      Chris J Peavy It mostly depends on the concentration and quantity of the reactants used. It doesn’t hurt to wait a short while for the nitration to go to completion, but what determines how long it takes is how much nitric acid to cotton you have. Too much cotton and not all of it nitrates, and too much acid could mean you’re wasting excess acid down the line if you don’t know how to purify it. If anything, waiting too long could destabilize the flash cotton or cause too many unwanted byproducts to contaminate it, like in the video, but giving it like a day to nitrate while covered shouldn’t hurt anything, and it should ensure the reaction has gone to completion. Just make sure to clean the cotton very thoroughly before using it. It should look like ordinary cotton by the time you’re done cleaning it, or with a slight yellow tinge at the very most.

    DO NOT LEAVE THE NITRIC ACID COTTON MIX OVERNIGHT. Soak in acid for a couple minutes, rinse thoroughly in clean water, allow to dry (air dry or oven dry with extremely low heat, no flame). Ignite and stand back :)
    If you rinseit thoroughly, there will be very little yellowing of the cotton and very little residue. Impurities in your nitric acid solution can lead to more discoloration and a slower burn, depending on the impurity. The sodium bicarbonate solution is only necessary to deactivate the remaining acid when you finish nitrating the cotton and in case of acid spill emergencies.
    Allowing the nitric acid to form a cake around the cotton makes it significantly harder to wash the impurities and leftover nitric acid from the cotton.
    Please like this response to get it to Brian's attention.

    The "yellow" cotton likely has more impurities and is more condensed, whereas the "white" has more volume and less non-burning impurities. No reaction is 100% efficient, so the fact there was fillers and other things in the household ingredients you had means there will be way more impurities than if you had used pure chemistry-grade reactants. Your nitrocellulose still works very well!

    You know why the nitrocellulose is more flammable and does not “choke” when you put a bunch in a confined space? That is because of the added nitro groups (NO2) that give more oxygen to the hydrocarbon molecule of cellulose. This mixes a fuel and a oxidizer together. It means that the combustion of nitrocellulose does not need O2 (oxygen gas in the air) to occur, because it already has its own oxygen. That is roughly why the difference is so big.
    C6H10O5 (cellulose) C6H7(NO2)3O5 (nitrocellulose)
    ~> 5 oxygen atoms ~> 11 oxygen atoms

    Nitrocellulose has applications in old-timey film development and gets a lot of current use in biochemistry labs and probably other industrial uses. It's useful for adhering proteins samples to a thin sheet of it, which can then be used for binding things like antibody-bound-fluorescent tags so you can look for specific proteins in samples.
    Some other nitration reactions that should be familiar is TNT (tri-nitro-toluene) or nitro-glycerin, if you add some nitro groups to an organic molecule called toluene or glycerin (glycerol) you get a much more combustible/explosive version of them - similar to what you guys did here. You probably don't want to fuck with homemade TNT or nitroglycerin though.
