    This is one of my favorite Beatles songs. When it was released, I had no idea it was about the civil rights movement. Paul is good at writing songs with several layers of meaning. I would sing it aloud to myself when I suffered great pain. It is truly a music classic, not just a Beatles classic.

    • @janicehussock7735
      @janicehussock7735 8 років тому +29

      The civil rights movement was active in the United States. They were interested in American politics and history but felt the need not to say things bc they were British. "Bird" is British slang for a young girl or woman. An attractive one. They eventually did make public declarations concerning Vietnam. Bc they were from Liverpool, they were exposed to much American black music. Unlike other pop performers of the time, they freely admitted they admired the music and named specific performers. They just said they adapted it with great respect. Paul and John would always suggest to fans that they check out the original recordings. I expect Bob Dylan was a major influence. You make the song timeless by not wedding it to a specific incident. I recall when the album was released. Paul did not talk about it then.

    Understanding this is Paul's empathy, while in Scotland reading about racial segregation and racism in Little Rock all the way back then... which JUST happened. He wrote this in the hopes people who were oppressed via racism in America might hear this and be inspired to have a little hope. Like Strange Fruit, this isn't just an important and profound song about civil rights, it's beautiful.

      They're cover versions. Each person brings something slightly different to a song. I'm not a massive fan of the way he does it here, it's all personal preference. One thing is for sure, it's been done by better singers. I'd say many people are perfectly capable of making 'musical sense' out of it, and have.

    Unique - what a great song.
    After the fall of the wall in Germany, I later stood in front of the Abbey Road Studios. Only Mc Cartney couldn't stop by.

    The simpler the song, the more I like it. Music should be more like this, just a single instrument, a charming voice and a beautiful melody. What would be of us if The Beatles had never existed...

    This is a truly heart warming and soul touching song. It's a shame I had to first hear it under the grimmest of circumstances. I was reading a story about a man who lost both his wife and his newborn child, and the man sung this song to his child before he died.♥

    I completely agree this song is special. To me his brilliance is redefining how the guitar is played on this song. That is really really hard to do. To me it's a testimony to their true brilliance of thinking outside the box and searching for awnsers unknown before looking... thank you Paul

    He is an unquestionable icon, one of the greatest in music history, but he is now at about 70% of his younger vocal ability. No shame in that, still very good, but his greatness is in the past. You pay now to see the personality, the legend, and enjoy the music for its own sake.
