I have "take these broken wings and learn to fly" tattooed on my back. I struggled with anxiety and depression, but I over came it and I always thought of myself of the blackbird with broken wings who learned to fly. This song means so much to me and I always tear up when I hear it. ❤
This is one of my favorite Beatles songs. When it was released, I had no idea it was about the civil rights movement. Paul is good at writing songs with several layers of meaning. I would sing it aloud to myself when I suffered great pain. It is truly a music classic, not just a Beatles classic.
The civil rights movement was active in the United States. They were interested in American politics and history but felt the need not to say things bc they were British. "Bird" is British slang for a young girl or woman. An attractive one. They eventually did make public declarations concerning Vietnam. Bc they were from Liverpool, they were exposed to much American black music. Unlike other pop performers of the time, they freely admitted they admired the music and named specific performers. They just said they adapted it with great respect. Paul and John would always suggest to fans that they check out the original recordings. I expect Bob Dylan was a major influence. You make the song timeless by not wedding it to a specific incident. I recall when the album was released. Paul did not talk about it then.
I completely agree with you but to me his brilliance is redefining how the guitar is played on this song. that is really really hard to do. to me it's a testimony to their true brilliance of thinking outside the box and searching for awnsers unknown before looking... thank you Paul
Understanding this is Paul's empathy, while in Scotland reading about racial segregation and racism in Little Rock all the way back then... which JUST happened. He wrote this in the hopes people who were oppressed via racism in America might hear this and be inspired to have a little hope. Like Strange Fruit, this isn't just an important and profound song about civil rights, it's beautiful.
I am from Chihuahua, México and I just read about the meaning.of this song in a bookstore in San Antonio, TX. You are right. It's about the civil rights of black people. "All your life you were only waiting.for this moment to be free". Amazing message of hope and motivation for the suppressed.
