Don't know if it is because of mother influence or if it's just coincidence, but gen 1 and 2 (especially gen 1) to me has really similiar vibes. Not only the urban setting, but also the humor, like having a sea sick captain, mobs running the game corner, d̶r̶u̶n̶k̶ caffenaited and pervert old men (funny to notice how earthbound and Pokemon rby were censored the same way, most probably just a coincidence tho). It feels like Kanto and Johto were meant to be an exaggerated fantastical alternative reality Japan, like America and Eagleland were for USA. Imo I think this aspect is lost in later titles as Pokemon started to expand on the lore of its world and whitewashed a bit the edge

Nice to see someone talking about the connections between these two franchises. I've always been curious about what exactly was going on with Red/Green during it's early development and what kind of changes the developers from Ape brought about when they starting helping. Hopefully someday we'll get some more info about it.

What a great video!!! I love so much both series and a knew some things like the creation of Creatures, but Tajiri talking about Mother 1 blowed my mind
While they can be written of as pure coincidences. I feel like Akira and Mother have a few similarities, Earthbound specifically.
1: Masaru bearing an almost eerie resemblance to Porky.
2: Tetsuo losing control of his power and becoming an almost indescribable being, mirroring Giygas’ story.
3: Tetsuo having an inferiority complex and being envious towards his childhood friend Kaneda mirroring Ness and Porky’s relationship pretty well.
Like I said, these are very likely just pure coincidences, I don’t think it’s out of the question that Akira may have influenced Earthbound in some way. The film is referenced almost as much as 2001: A Space Odyssey.

I’ve love to see a deep dive on how Dragon Quest inspired both the Mother and Pokémon games.
Oh God, yes. About five years ago, I played the original NES Dragon Quest games for the first time, and in particular after finishing the second one, I kind of had an epiphany where I could see just how much Mother 1/Earthbound Beginnings was based on it, and basically parodied a lot of its elements.

The mother 3 love theme and the black and white song have a mashup on yt that is beautiful.
You could also compare Porky and Blue/Gary. Both are your (annoying/jerkish) neighbors, you run into them multiple times in the game and you fight both of them in the final battle of the game.

Considering how long gen 1 pokemon was in development for, it wouldn't be surprising if Ninten was a reference. Not only that, but apparently Ninten was always called Ninten based on the March 1989 video trailer, the Encyclopedia, and a September 1989 interview.

Maybe this already exists but there should totally be a Earthbound rom hack for Pokemon that replaces the Pokemon with Earthbound enemies, the gyms could be based off of the sanctuary guardians with Bug for Titanic Ant, Ground for Mondo Mole, Grass for Trillionage Sprout, Poison for Shrooom!, Dark for Plague Rat of Doom, Electric + double battle for Thunder and Storm, Ghost for Electro Spectre and Fire for Carbon Dog

My phrasing may have been slightly confusing but I was saying that the first five notes of both the Love Theme and N’s Farewell are the same as Eight Melodies, but at a different tempo.
