I have watched a lot of tutorials in my time and the presenting style of this video is the best I have ever seen. I really like the speed you get through such a complicated subject and that every single choice you make is backed-up with an excellent explanation as to why, without holding up the flow of the video. I was captivated from beginning to end and feel like I have learnt something along the way. Thank you very much - you are a true master.
Good tutorial.😊 Just a few points regarding ship' design. The hull's wake is too linear with no divergence at the stern. At the bow, the wake angle is too big as well. That's due to an excesive draft that doesn't allow for a smooth flow. The water line, in normal ship's condition, must be below the tramson edge. Submerging this edge is always avoided due to the very high drag it induces. An aproximate reference is that the water line must be below the line between the red and gray parts of the hull.😊 Another point about speed. Over 30 knots is a standard service speed for this kind of vessel that corresponds to over 18 m/s. Good tutorial, thanks for sharing 😊
I keep getting hard hard edges around the simulator especially at the back and sides of the ship. I tryed setting the fade out in the rendering rollout without luck & i definitely have the ocean level setting equal to the initial fill up. did anyone get this problem? what could be wrong?
I can't find the Liquids tab (parameters) in the 3.00.01 DEMO version for 2017. Has it been replaced or consolidated in a different tab, or is it not available?
My version of Phoenix FD doesn't have the "Ocean" drop-down option under "Rendering" tab. It only starts with a check box for jittering. I'm using version - 2.1.1. Any suggestions?
Thank you for the tutorial. Very helpfull. I was wondering how to fix a problem im having. I want to have multiple ships as a copy from 1 simulation. The problem is that the infinite oceans are blending with each other. Is there a way to blend seamlessly multiple simulators with ocean mode. I really hope you can give me some advise. I have been trying all kind of things. And im getting the feeling my only solution is to do it with composting and try to blend them with masks. although my setup is complex enough so don't want to add more passes and render time! And the second problem im having is, The fade out parameter is not working for me. Any advice on that ?? Thank you in advance!
Good stuff but unfortunately this tutorial is no more totally compatible with phoenix release 3.0, please is possible new tut for last release, thank you :)
Agreed, but one thing you can do is save a preset of his simulation settings for the "PheonixFDLiquid". Then remake the sim grid with the new 3.0 and load his settings. I did this and it worked like a charm.
please I want your help , I have installed phoenix fd in windows 8.1 with 3d max 2014 , but the phoenix fd not appear inside 3d max ... how can i solve this problem ?????
For some reason when i do the step of passing the preview to " mesh" it doesnt appear o.o am i doing something wrong? the simulation does great like on the video but when i try mesh it it doesnt do the same D: help
Awesome tutorial. I've used the sample file a couple of times but nice to be able to set up the whole thing myself. How many hours did you use on the simulaton itself? I have followed your steps and have a resolution about 40 mil. but after 5 frames it's still over 24 hours of simulation left, which I guess will increase further. This is before foam and splash. Have Intel X5660 2.8ghz and 25 gb ram.
For the 600frames it took about 12hours (about 1min per frame). To speed up the simulation I've disabled the preview of the mesh as well as particles, because sometimes it takes more time to read the cache and display it in the viewport instead of the actual simulation time. The speed of the hard drive is also quite important.
What are the specs of your PC please? I want compare my sim times to yours. And my foam is just not detailed at all, even though im using a similar number of cells to yourself.
This is really amazing, Just wants to ask a questn, Fr 3ds Max architectural work and such kind on fluid animations I wants to upgrade my graphic card so which graphic card is good, quadro p4000 or rtx 3080... ? Pls help
I hope you didn't buy the Quadro P4000. I had one and was severely disappointed. I even had a Quadro RTX 4000 and that wasn't very good either. From now on I shall avoid anything with a 4000 in the name - LOL.
@@SimonKotowiczUK but sadly I purchased quadro p4000 which is just ok its not so strong card, and the reality is I m still finding a good card for such type of works. 😀
The waves produced by the PhoenixFDOcean Texture are just displacement and can't react with the simulation. You can however use the PHXMapper together with the ocean texture to create real waves or by using the standard max forces to produce the needed activity.
Is there a way to decrease the foam rendering time? I'm animating a small motorboat and it took 30 minutes to render only the foam part of the picture about 350 pixels square. My computer is pretty fast tho.
we have to create separate tutorial about the foam rendering and how to optimize it. this ship renders about 2 min per frame, but many users send us scenes that reach up to few hours per frame on single machine. i can't say why it is slow in your case, in general try to reduce the number of the rays - don't use gi, if it's possible use directional light instead area light. write in the forum for more advices
STROB.NET ianucci I'm American and I would LOVE to see the U.S. get rid of imperial and switch to metric. Will make life easier for all of us. Especially programmers.
Oh, so in UK your speed limits aren't mph, you don't say your weight and height in stones and feet, and you don't measure your golf strokes in yards? I must have been misconceived! :p
Fewwwwwh .. what a headache one .. too much details and branches .. how genuis they are those the programers and the ones who are behind all these stuffs .. god bless your efforts :)

Thank you for a very nice and detailed tutorial !
and congratulations to Ivaylo and to the whole team for
the amazing new features on Phoenix FD 2.2

what could be wrong?
Any updates about this problem?
Can you make a maya version tutorial please? You didn't update tutorial for maya for a long time.
what if i have a truck driving through h mud holes. Then mud will not appear untill truck gets there with that green box
I was wondering. Can we actually keyframe the size of the Grid (container)?
I can't find the Liquids tab (parameters) in the 3.00.01 DEMO version for 2017. Has it been replaced or consolidated in a different tab, or is it not available?
you can find some same parameters in foam tab.. but still doest works
Cool! I think it will work with 3dsMax+Vue xstream!

I need help. When I make the video I see the boundaries of the phoenix box. Can I fix this problem? It is urgent to please
I'm having a trouble i cannot batch render phoenix materials using vray in maya but i can render a single frame with it.
can phoenix fd simulate waves force on the ship ? like make the ship float in the water and interact with the waves
Thank you for the tutorial. Very helpfull.

I agree! They really need to update this tutorial for what is different in 3.0 since so many settings changed.

how could make a low render time?, y have 30 min for frame..please need help..
can i use this tutorial to learn how to make a whale jumping splash?

Thanks for the great tut! Very useful information there. Is it possible to achieve this using Phoenix 2.0 for maya?
Unfortunately not.The "Inertial forces" in Phoenix FD 2.2. were re-designed to make such simulations possible.
Tsvetan Milanov well, always can ask for nightly access
Hello! Wich are the pc specs that you worked with? Thank you!
where can i get the ship?

Sir, I installed 'PhoenixFD 30400' in 3ds max 2014 but I am not getting find 'PHXSimulator'. Please inform me, how can i get PHXSimulator.
update tutorial for new phoenixfd 2020 please

you better save some spaces at home for render farm .. hahahahaha .. same damn thing is happening to me .. T_T
The same for 3.0 please do this
good stuff, thank you
We've been metric in the UK for over 40 years :p
Yeah, the misconception stuck around though :)
In canada too. I think only the US are still imperial.

Hahaha, touche.
Finally
Anyone who wants the updated one, there is one here on Chaos Group's site: docs.chaosgroup.com/display/PHX3MAX/Ship+in+the+Ocean
what are the specs of the pc?

12GB RAM
Thanks for the tutorial George St Pierre. :P
Please create a maya version
pass the ship model my friend
