What's your favorite version of 'More Gun'? Personally it's V3 for me, since it's the most complete rendition. But I think there's merit to not only what they tried to do with the CYOA versions, but also to the Poker Night version. The Poker Night version is a great listen. If you say the Midi version, you're just a masochist.
It's definitely the Poker Night variation. Something I value in music, especially video game music, is how the instruments chosen for the arrangement fit into the themes of the piece. I felt like the accordion just doesn't fit with my image of the Engineer, but the smooth electric guitar of the Poker Night fits him far better than any other version, even V1 or More Gun.
“How am I gonna stop some mean mother Hubbard from tearin me a structurally superfluous new behind? The answer: use a gun. And if that don’t work, use more gun.”
2:07 I rewatched that a few times and realize there was a gap between when the bullet hit the rail and his reaction, which was a genuinely neat surprise. Not only is it funny to watch a man stare emotionlessly at a stream of bullets heading his way, but it made his animated model feel like it was truly alive.
13:53 Looked into my rip of the files that I did at Jungle Inferno, it's actually burned into the Meet the Medic file including the version with a TV effect filter on it, Valve messed up and just pushed it to live
Thanks for that piece of info! I figured due to the way it was rendered that it had to be a mistake. The idea of merging the two isn’t inherently bad but when one song ends way before the other it becomes pretty obvious it was a mistake.
I remember a friend was hired to compose the score for a small college group's animation and they got a notification from Sony because the song he composed sounded too similar to a popular song and this prompted the animators to use royalty free tracks instead. Bummer but at least they paid my friend 50% in advance. The music industry is awful, I actually really love Meet The Sniper's rendition/homage of the Magnum Force music but we'll probably never hear a clean version of it, unless we befriend Mike Morasky and listen to the original project lol Lovely video Skymin, was a welcome notification
I think the reason More Gun was released officially and not Magnum Force is because country blues artists are historically better about their music being used
without sharing their music and doing covers, country wouldve gone nowhere. im glad people are keeping up with that tradition even as copyright laws change

This is now the thing I care about in the next 19 minutes and 18 seconds. Seriously though, I love inconsequential rabbit holes like this, they are so fun. Thanks for the video.
18:12 also the whole "do you believe in magic" part doesn't play in-game, only the bits from dreams of cruelty. There's probably different licensing stuff for in-game versus using it for a one-off video
FINALLY SOMEONE TALKS ABOUT IT!!!!! More Gun has been one of my most listened to songs, and played songs, because I chose it as the first song to fully learn on the guitar. And by fully learn, I do mean adapting the song fully into an acoustic version and writing my own tabs. Which was a nightmare- on Ultimate Guitar, the tabs available for More Gun were mostly all incomplete, focusing solely on the main riff, or they were based off of a different version of the song. The different versions of the song and their origins Always perplexed me, and eventually I settled on the version that's officially released on spotify, which is Ver. 3, iirc. I never knew what the CYOA version was for, so it's really neat that that piece of the puzzle is finally solved in my mind, and I can officially rename the file from "More Gun ALT" to "More Gun CYOA". Someone Else's Song is something I also listen to quite frequently, and I find the subtle differences between the two intto acoustic parts so fascinating to analyze in relation to the near identical mood they both set. I think, if valve had wanted to stick to version 2 with the more in focus harmonica which makes it sound more like a one-sided duet (it's fairly obvious that the harmonica was just layered on top of the guitar, with little to no integration or back and forth between the two instruments), it would've been much more pleasing to replace the harmonica with a viola, fiddle style. I'm thinking double stops to help build chords, and slides, flutters, and slurs to engage with the melody. The life that a viola can emote through its croaks and flatter sounding voice would really add to the General Vibe of the acoustic section of More Gun, a la laid-back folk song. Anywho- loved the video, really cool to see someone contribute to the parched lands of tf2 music discussions
Great video! I appreciate the amount of effort you've put into researching. I've made a small essay analyzing Tf2's music and I struggled to find even half of what you found, your expertise really shows here. And I really appreciate you using my recreation!
In terms of musical composition you’re definitely more of an expertise than I am. I just have a penchant for researching rabbit holes. Your recreation is fantastic! Really nice to have a high quality rendition of the song that still stays relatively true to the original.

Honestly I’d like to hear a version of More Gun V2 where the harmonica wasn’t crammed in as an obvious placeholder while they composed a new version. A version with harmonica makes sense, it’s got that country feel to it that fits Engie.
I think something fascinating to point out is that the guitar arrangement changes from Version 0 (the one in Meet the Engineer) and Version 1 released in the soundtrack. Now it doesn’t differ by a lot, but it’s noticeable if you listen closely. Version 0 never actually has the acoustic guitar change from major to minor like in Version 1, it simply loops the chord progression (with maybe a single note changed total) but its very hard to tell because the video fades out before you can tell. As well some of the transitions from chord to chord are different and Version 1 is noticeably played with a pick while Version 0 is played with fingers like shown in the video. Future versions change up the arrangement even further I believe
I didn't actually know the sniper's theme was taken from something else so when i heard the song blasting through the floor on the downstairs TV i thought my dad was the sniper from team fortress 2 and i ran down quickly only to be disappointed.
As a harmonica player… I *hate* the harmonica in More Gun. Accordion was a much more fitting choice musically. Also, that conspiracy theory also provides proof Valve is working on Team Fortress 3. Confirmed now.
I love your Engie cosplay as a whole, it's great, but *specifically* the goggles (and your dedication to wearing them throughout the video, because it seems like they probably obscure vision??) are just an amazing touch. At first I was thinking, "wow, those are oversized for comedic effect," then looking at the engineer... nope, that's about the right scale... but that's because even in TF2, they're comically oversized! Perfect attention to detail and gave me a good laugh by making me actually think about some of the silliness of the mercs' kits... I hope that they're more transparent than they look if you're wearing your Engie cosplay to conventions, haha!
They were fogging up during filming. I kept having to wipe them out. As long as they weren't too fogged up I could read my script sitting behind the camera, so the vision isn't tooooo obscured. I still wouldn't wear them walking around a con though, just for photos due to the fog and headache issue. They'll be primarily around my neck when I wear this costume out. Yeah Engie is supposed to be wearing Welding goggles, which are very large for a reason. Can't wear real welding goggles though, you can't see through them normally.
The fact that meet the snipers music is timed with the short dosent strictly mean that it was written for it, same with the one for engie. It very well could have been and i trust your judgement, but most times the music is made first. It could be made with the intention of being used for the short, but ive never heard of making a song after how the action on screen playes out. Usually a song is chosen and the action is timed around that, not the other way round. Great vid!
This is a fair point. Regardless of which came first, the animation/editing sync did end up being intentional. They almost certainly used the original as a reference when putting the short together because it has very similar flourish sections if you will. But the version in the short is faster and more condensed, so I’d be willing to think it was composed this way specifically for the short. But it’s just speculation since as far as I’m aware there isn’t an answer.
