Brad hints at Game Pass being too big to fail, so if it actually did "fail" - not become profitable - MS would just pivot and turn GP into something else. On a related note, I think having to pay for online will eventually not exist in the near future (5, 10 years) because it's one way to grow your ecosystem by removing as many barriers of entry. Some F2P are like this already, but imagine exclusives like CoD where you can just hop on (on console) and play MP regardless of your XB Live tier like it's been on PC for decades.
If I would have to pay €12.50 monthly to be able to play online and have a 90% less bot / hack rate, I would be all for it. If everyone moved over to PS because of the online fee means there are already way less bots and hackers around. This is why a lot of people avoid free to play games like the plague because yes it does bring the worst players around to it.
I think giving people options is always a good thing. Whether Gamepass is worth it or not only you can answer that question. Different strokes. If you play through Gamepass or decide to buy it you'll have to spend money either way. If you have a wider interest in gaming and play a lot of games a year then Gamepass is a no brainer. If you are the type who only plays stuff like COD and Madden but rarely any other games then you are better off just buying the few games you want. Remember if you're playing online on console you're paying a subscription fee to access online multiplayer anyway. I personally find it worth it since I play a lot and it's amazing value and since 1st party games don't leave the service and any other 3rd party games I really like I can just buy them since being a member also gives you discounts to those games.
It has already started. They removed day & date from standard and have done price increases. 2025 will be a defining year for GamePass. BC if COD didn't do what they needed then GamePass will change drastically this year.
I just recently went back to Steam PC. I got tired of the Xbox drama lol And I got tired of how so many of my Xbox games didn’t work on the Xbox PC app
IMO MS will move to timed GP titles. So new game will launch on GP 6 months after launch. I also think they will start rotating titles in and out of game pass that are MS products. Streaming services like Netflix do that as well. It keeps you getting new content without paying extra.
It would be hard to determine I think without numbers. We have no ideal of cost. We can assume cost are rising due to the increase in subscription price but that is inconclusive. I feel they’ve hurt themselves essentially racing to the bottom. GP offers a great value and you would think it would of taken off. Simple math would say hey PS has more subs and sells more al a cart games by not offering day one. Essentially giving them reoccurring revenue and sales. With the online requirement for console… they were going to get the subscription fee in most cases. I think PS knows that. I think they may have offered too much value in an attempt for mass adoption. Time will only tell.
The ABK deal and GP is about protecting the Windows OS. Steam will eventually release SteamOS to everyone and its adoption will increase. Microsoft will make sure that certain games will never work on Linux, for example Warzone.
@ that’s a possibility. MS is a service based company. In a way it seems odd to compete in certain sectors like hardware. Seems like the strategy would be provide the software.. to anyone..PC PS..Nintendo..provide services and tools to anyone like cloud infrastructure ect. Create game engines and license them out. Leave hardware to OEMs or the user. It’s seems that would align with the the company overall but of course each business or sector is different
If GamePass has compelling exclusive content, it won't fail. Now that it actually has a healthy content pipeline, we can properly evaluate it. GamePass up to this point was like the dollar movies--old content for a cheap price.
Spencer said also that the Gamepass is profitable and represents 10 to 15% of the revenues of Xbox in 2022. He said also that he doesn't think it will be higher than that in the future. The traditional business model is still the most important source of revenue. So what if the game pass disappears? Not much...
I do see Xbox eroding though. For instance, when was the last time you got a friend online notification? It's broken and no one bothers to fix it. Also, on PC Gamebar, party chat is not working.
I've tried so many more games, especially smaller games, because they were included with Game Pass. I can't imagine unsubbing unless you are player who only plays one game for years.
Do you really wanna support avowed and Matt Hansen that woke cry baby with his illegal hiring practises ? Because paying for gamepass is supporting that clown as well Can't vote with your wallet blindly paying every month/year
Here are some positives: 1. Software sales would improve as there have been people who play and complete games on Game Pass and not bother buying them because they have already completed them. 2. Developers would not get screwed over the "high player numbers, low sales numbers" curse that Game Pass brings, which is what screwed over Tango Gameworks. 3. Hardware sales of Xbox consoles may improve as the removal of Game Pass would limit access to Xbox Software. Cons: 1. The removal of Game Pass would be detrimental to those who play on the cloud, especially for those who don't have access to an Xbox console. 2. There would be no way to try before you buy Xbox Software if demos aren't an option. 3. Xbox Cloud won't be a thing anymore, meaning that players will have to upgrade to Xbox Series if they want to play games that are not playable on Xbox One.
If your paying for gamepass to demo games then you have to be the biggest clown going , just demand them to make a demo or your not buying , don't ever pay for a demo that's ridiculous Xbox was really just shooting fish in a barrel with the gullible Xbox audience
Gamepass is not their core focus and it hasn't been for a while, its more of a benefit being in their ecosystem now since they changed the tier systems. Also, Black Ops 6 would have not launched into gamepass if they were that skeptical.
35 millions gamepass * $15 avg price = $525 millions per month = $6.3 billions per year.. Ya gamepass is not going to anywhere..most game developers take 3-4 years on game to make $100 millions in game sales .. while Gamepass is making 4x money in month..with COD coming on Gamepass every year means subscribers numbers at least will remain same but most likely going up YOY..
*"Gamepass conditions its users to NOT buy games"* I've seen this all over the internet and its true. Xbox is putting the few first party games on other platforms to make up for the millions of people that use gamepass but DON'T buy games. This is what xbox gamers don't understand then they wonder why the better game devs and studios tend to stay away from Xbox and gamepass Phil is crazy he tries to sell games to the same people who are taught by gamepass to not buy games 🤣🤣🤣 I have both consoles ps5 nand series x but the series x rarely gets used because the games are bad and the few games I would play are going to Playstation anyway 😬
I wish GamePass was never created or at least the “Day 1 games” was never a thing. I DONT want the gaming industry to become what the Music industry has become where Spotify and Apple Music run the industry and SCREW OVER musicians! In this example it would be GamePass screwing over game studios and developers! BUY YOUR GAMES PEOPLE STOP RENTING , YOURE PART OF THE PROBLEM!!
No, that's not how this works at all. Musicians never got paid well before Spotify from CD sales or radio plays, and Spotify isn't even profitable because the big publishers have so much control over the back catalog that they can basically demand whatever they want and pay the artists as little as they want. Spotify and Apple Music don't run shit, the big 3 publishers do. The better comparison for Game Pass is video streaming like Netflix, Disney, Max and Apple TV, which all are investing heavily in projects that otherwise never would have been made in order to build up their catalog. Microsoft is pouring money into studios to get out games big and small in order to cement themselves as a major player in Game Streaming. The studios and game devs get paid more, not less, because Game Pass exists. Far fewer people were ever going to play smaller titles like Grounded, HellBlade 2, Outer Worlds, Pentiment if they had to buy them outright. Palworld literally would've never been a success. Fable would not be getting tons of funding. Starfield would not have gotten an extra year of development time. You can maybe argue that the big studios with guaranteed hits like COD, Diablo and ES6 will lose money on GamePass, but all those projects rely more on MTX than box sales.
@@Quiet_9 You say studios and game devs get paid more not less but how when microsoft has to split that gamepass revenue generated between ALL those other games within the service with their respective game studios and publishers? Microsoft isnt going to throw cash endlessly into a money pit that is gamepass, they even cut back on making deals 3rd party devs because they themselves know money isnt being generated like they want and cant afford to pay all these devs. For smaller AA and indie games gampass is a perfect situation and combination I somewhat agree but for AAA and bigger games like FABLE, INDIANA JONES, DOOM, PERFECT DARK etc the games that majority of people play it makes even less sense. Microsoft could be making WAYY more money if they just flat out sold their games normally instead of putting them day 1 on a sub service which cannibalizes game sales. Palworld didnt need xbox to be successful when the game sold a TON on pc alone. Fable and starfield etc are not contingent on gamepass being a succes in order to get more "funding" or getting "extra year of development", thats microsoft mismanagement to rely on gamepass to allocate certain funding and resources to only certain games. If they just sold games like normal they would be making so much more money ( which is all these corporations care about) and they wouldnt have "funding" issues. Finally, thats not even going whole problem of gamepass eliminating game ownership. To this day and many years into the future people will ALWAYS prefer to OWN their products, gamepass is encouraging people to not buy 1st party games which is why i brought up the example of the music industry. Gamepass has been stagnant for years and people are TIRED of subscription services for a reason, prices keep going up, you dont own anything, time is finite anyways etc. NO ONE wants the gaming industry to become dominated by dumb subscribtion services like spotify and apple music does for music and how netflix, MAX, Disney+ etc does for movies and tv.....thats my point
@@lawlessx9 im talking about 1st party devs not 3rd party devs. Even then microsoft cut back on the spending for gamepass beacuse even they know money isnt coming in like they like which proves my entire point. @jared5706 saying game pass hurts game ownership for people who want to own games is like saying Netflix ruined movie ownership for people who'd rather buy DVDs. It's ridiculous. Rental services don't replace ownership, they exist adjacent to it. It's digital ownership, not services like Netflix, that reduces demand for physical ownership because many prefer digital libraries, and that's the enemy of DVDs (and physical game enthusiasts). As far as profitability, Microsoft literally owns the studios that are making the games, whether they are AA or AAA. They are invested in making sure the studios they own are profitable. I'm sure they will adjust the price of the tiers if it's not economical, but so far we've seen them look to other ways to make money: expansions and dlc still cost full price, early access still costs extra, every major game has MTX, and they offer you games in the catalog at a discount if you want to own them. You mentioned Doom, that's a great example of a game not popular enough for many people to spend $70, but popular enough to that many with Game Pass will give it a spin. The in house studios are also likely getting a larger cut of the sale, because they're not losing 30% to Steam, Epic or Sony. They no longer need to be successful by as large of a margin to have profit.
Gamepass is a double edged sword for me I love it but it's making getting physical copies for Xbox games impossible there digital only plus my local game stop in Maysville ky is closing down on January 11th
WTF? 🤣😂🤣😂🤣🤣 What a strange question to pose at this point. Hell…in that case, what if anything fails. LOL What if (fill in the blank) fails? 🤔 But Game Pass attracts the clicks.
I don’t think it’s a dumb question. For example if Ps Plus goes away Sony still sells many first and third party games. They make a lot of money ouyof micro transactions from third party. MS is leaning heavily into Gamepass, however having bought AB gives them a consistent revenue stream now. Just quick guesses.
If gamepass fails we just stay here in the status quo right? Isn’t this the same question as what if Stadia succeeded or if Xbox One DRM succeeded? If there was a massive industry change then things would be different.
Xbox one drm did succeed. It was silently forced in to the series consoles. You can't buy a series x plop a disc in and play it if it's not been set up. And backwards compatibility doesn't work unless you have an internet connection.
@ it’s not industry standard change. A portion of that functionality is on the third most popular console. It’s not the same as something like paid online which fully succeeds across all console gamers
@ They follow Xbox when they are successful. I have no doubt if some of Xbox more extreme policies were more popular they would have been copied. I think you are wrong about PC tho, it has DRM issues but it has fewer than any other platform
I wonder if the PS5 will fail if they continue to only release one AAA First Party exclusive a year as they have for years now ? As it is its nothing more than a multiformat console that has next to no current gen developed games if its own.
lol… I wasn’t being facetious with my question. I was legitimately asking the question. If the Xbox console truly fails… I firmly believe gamepass will fail.

XBOX knows this. X Forever 😎
Phil Spencer has not only said Gamepass is sustainable but also that it’s profitable. We shouldn’t only look to take apart every statement when it’s positive. Everyone takes their words at face value when their words are negative.
I think this year will be critical for Game Pass in terms of it's long term future. They have a lot of games launching this year. And you would think that this would attract new users. And let's be honest. The only places where they can find these people is Mobile and PC.
I don’t get it everybody keeps telling me it’s doing great, even though I don’t have it. I have core because that’s all I need. I actually buy my games but the digital. Or 1086 of them.
Gamepass has been around how many literal years now and there are people still asking "what if it fails?" Fact, it already succeeded if you're gonna ask an intelligent question it would be "how long will it last" It's just like the Playstation tactic of high budget AAA exclusives. Did it fail, no, but it didn't last forever either.
I mean it's pretty simple at this point. Microsoft Gaming/Xbox has become one of the BIGGEST gaming entities in the industry. If Game Pass doesn't work they'll just pivot from those plans and probably focus in more on being a publisher. I don't even think it'll affect Xbox hardware, and they've already partnered with companies like Nvidia to provide Xbox PC games on other streaming platforms. Xbox Game Pass failing would affect us as consumers more because it'd mean the gaming industry as a whole gets setback significantly in its evolution of providing value. It'd be like if Netflix failed out the gate and we were stuck with cable as our only option for another 10 odd years (eventually something would come around) which provides less value than Netflix at like 5x the price we're complaining about Netflix for costing now (I'm one of those complainers but it's still seriously so much cheaper than cable and because of Netflix popularizing a new market and changing the status quo cheap live TV options like Sling and even really good free options like Tubi and Pluto came about). At the end of the day this is a rounding error for Microsoft that they hope turns into a massive gateway for success. There was a post from an analyst a while back and Xbox first party titles now top a LOT of the Playstation sales charts in addition to PC and Xbox. At their lowest Xbox was pulling in 15 billion USD this gen before buying ABK and Bethesda (Zenimax). Now they've reached heights even beyond that. The business doesn't really care if one model fails. We as consumers should because that'd set the entire industry back, which would especially hurt at a time where games are costing more than ever and trying to squeeze us dry with freemium models on top of that.
Xbox gamepass ultimate is actually the best subscription cause u get games day 1 release n online services they are more friendly with consumers….Sony subscription is the worst u pay for ps plus premium and u get nothing much…Nintendo subscription is the cheapest but u get nothing much but online service..I’ve own 3 platforms PC Ps5 n Switch and I sub only to gamepass to play on PC

Gamepass is not hitting financial marks, hence Project Latitude which I reported December 2023 taking effect. Gamepass is now a subsidiary service to keep customers in the Xbox store like Amazon Prime. That's the story
That could be true. However, I would guess that it's still profitable. What's really hurting the Xbox division is the lack of hardware sales. Hopefully next Gen will be better.
GamesPass is just a digital Blockbuster or Redbox minus big games from PlayStation, Nintendo and years late releases for huge third party games like Rockstar's games, EA's games, Ubisoft, etc. GamePass will 100% fail.

You didn’t account for all of those developers that are paid to put their game on game pass from the small Indy to the AAA. They all made a calculation of how many game sales they would have versus what Microsoft will pay them so that’s erasing that five 600 million come on, dude.

I think the bigger, more interesting conversation is... how will we know if gamepass fails?
This is why a lot of people avoid free to play games like the plague because yes it does bring the worst players around to it.
youre wrong there, no one has any issues paying for online so companies have no incentive to stop charging for it
I think giving people options is always a good thing.
1hr wait times to play games on the ultimate plan is really making me reconsider my subscription

IMO MS will move to timed GP titles. So new game will launch on GP 6 months after launch. I also think they will start rotating titles in and out of game pass that are MS products. Streaming services like Netflix do that as well. It keeps you getting new content without paying extra.
Happy new year 🎉
No chance
Interesting take
If Game Pass succeeds what will happen?
They win money.
Spencer said also that the Gamepass is profitable and represents 10 to 15% of the revenues of Xbox in 2022.
He said also that he doesn't think it will be higher than that in the future. The traditional business model is still the most important source of revenue.

Can't vote with your wallet blindly paying every month/year
Ok so we now know what signs to look out for - but now ask why and how this hypothetical would happen...
Here are some positives:
Cons:
If your paying for gamepass to demo games then you have to be the biggest clown going , just demand them to make a demo or your not buying , don't ever pay for a demo that's ridiculous
Xbox was really just shooting fish in a barrel with the gullible Xbox audience

35 millions gamepass * $15 avg price = $525 millions per month = $6.3 billions per year.. *"Gamepass conditions its users to NOT buy games"*
I've seen this all over the internet and its true. Xbox is putting the few first party games on other platforms to make up for the millions of people that use gamepass but DON'T buy games. This is what xbox gamers don't understand then they wonder why the better game devs and studios tend to stay away from Xbox and gamepass
Phil is crazy he tries to sell games to the same people who are taught by gamepass to not buy games 🤣🤣🤣 I have both consoles ps5 nand series x but the series x rarely gets used because the games are bad and the few games I would play are going to Playstation anyway 😬
You think devs aren't getting paid to put games on game pass?
NO ONE wants the gaming industry to be run by another stupid subscription service........

Or what?
