Really good video! I am part of GAP Diagnostic (we make diagnostic systems specifically for Land Rovers) and am a huge fan of the L322 Range Rover. Your vid covers nearly all of the problems these vehicles have - I was REALLY impressed how well informed you are - and your humorous presentation is great. Land Rovers of this generation are not really as bad as their reputation makes them out to be. The issue is that when these vehicles have a problem, you are faced with Land Rover's abhorrent parts prices and, even more abhorrent, repair costs at a Land Rover dealer (which are quality wise often also abhorrent...). The TD6 motor is only 'bad' if you are expecting a nearly 20 year old Range Rover to still be in Bentayga territory. It's not and it wasn't. But compare it to the competition of its generation, a Jeep Grand Cherokee CRD or a Land Cruiser and it is more middle-of-the-road both in power and in 'tractorness'. And it is bomb-proof. Take care of it and it will last you to over 600k km. The transmission should be considered a 100k mi/160k km maintenance item. The good thing is, it is not terribly expensive to have repaired if you do some research. Just a €10-12/1000km to your operating costs. And the RR's off-road capabilities are truly impressive. See it as a more capable (;-p) alternative to a Land Cruiser, Pajero or Patrol and it becomes much, much more attractive - at a similar price. And on-road there is no comparison. Above all, purchase OE parts such as Valeo, Brembo, ATE, etcetc anywhere but from a Land Rover dealer and, as you said, find a good independent mechanic...
I love this format you have here. Would love to see more videos similar to this with different cars. I know it won't be cheap but nevertheless I like this
Great opportunity to see the man behind the videos who's knowledge inspires confidence when reviewing cars. Great review on the Range Rover honest and thorough. It was as much and beyond my expectations.
@@VioletGiraffe I think more likely one of the gear change clutches is gone. If it was the TC clutch then it would slip also in 5th gear. Might also just need an oil change as bad oil will make the clutches more slippery and may also result in insufficient pressure to actuate them, making the situation even worse. Quite often just flushing out and changing the oil can change what looked to be a very bad gearbox to working almost like new.
I had one of these from 2004 to 2006, nearly three years. Yes, the engine is noisy and underpowered. The main problem with these early examples was the front differential, a BMW part shared with X5, was prone to shear its pinion shaft. I believe that a modification was made available at a later date. This has lasted better than expected and probably better than most examples. Oh yes, tyre noise was terrible as the tread wore down, certainly very bad as the original GoodYear tyres wore on my example. The GM auto five speed box was considered to be a weak point but it worked fine while I had it, which was for less than 50,000 miles from new. I’’m posting this on Jan 1st 2025 having, just two weeks ago, bought a three year old L405 diesel with Ingenium 3.0 straight six diesel that has done 50,000 miles. A LR Approved vehicle which I added a total of three years unlimited mileage warranty. My first Range Rover or JLR vehicle since 2006.
The humming noise is one / or more wheel bearings, despite sounding like it's coming from the transmission. I changed 3 bearings in one year. Use only Timken bearings.
Was expecting more rust, but the rear sill area is totally gone and would be a definite MOT fail in the UK. I say that as an L322 owner who has already paid out for that exact repair !
If the gear box gets in limp mode....100% you have a bad crankposition senzor...but you must buy a ORIGINAL one.......i had the same problem to the e38 7 series...&...impuls sensoren in deutsch !!
I'm so happy I live in New Zealand, when I crawl under my 20 year old Toyota Camry there is virtually no rust (most cars for of mechanical failure.) Whenever I watch European or North American UA-camrs it makes me cringe.
Nice job! Really like your videos especially your car reviews. I wanted to get your opinion on what are the most reliable used German cars/suvs? I like Lexus and their reliability. But is there anything German That would be comparable.
I think it’s very good for it’s age and miles, Ive seen lots worse younger German cars with less miles. Very well accomplished car often underrated, and obviously the weakest part is the gm part
No sir, the air pump isn't for use on the tires. Find the large satchel that says, *_"Emergency Inflatable Tow Vehicle."_* That's what your pump is for.
Hey man, please review Honda Civic :) until 2000- 2017 before this new ugly facelift. I know people are saiing those things are very reliable, but is it true.. ;)
Use a trailer with a tow truck on it. That way you'll be able to get back home (knocking wood). There's a reason why there are still so many Range Rovers on the road: they all broke down.

Brilliant video. You should be on TV. Change the gearbox oil. They say it's sealed for life but it's bullshit. It's a fairly simple job to do.
Probably requires torque converter replacement, precisely because oil hadn't been changed often enough (or at all).

Try changing the gearbox oil. It sounds and looks like that transmission is on its last legs, so you got nothing to lose.
