My issue is the electronics and that minivan looking back. The did a half ass job with redesign and plopped a bmw engine in a seriously faulty product electronically and had the nerve to use a lot of plastic parts again. IMO RRs are nice to look at not nice to own and maintain
I own the first RR and the actual l460. I can’t argue against the actual, drove 20k miles in 5 Months faultless and comfy. I had a lot of RR´s and honestly, there is no dislike for any Model generation from my side. The only I dislike is the show off black alloy trend on RR´s, looks so wrong on such an functional classic tourer…
Great video! Thanks! I own a L322 Supercharged 4.2L V8 from 2006 (same interior as the 2009) and I find the design the most iconic one. I own it for 3 years now and made a 12.000 km roadrrip with it and had except for a battery drain (which has been solved now) no issues with it. I always look forward to make a ride with it and am a proud owner. This car makes you feel like you are part of a way of life: a unique combination of luxury and outdoors.
Is a great car albeit keep an eye on the coolant level. I have one with the same engine a 2010 AJ V8 jaguar engine same as yours except slightly more muscular 5.0 . One thing that goes unnoticed is the coolant hoose between the supercharger and the engine block where due to high temperature it will eventually present small cracks some microscopic so if the coolant level goes down and you don’t observe any leaking bellow the car then you know there is the spot on 90% of the cases, and keep an eye on your belt tensioner change the tensioner preventively due to high torque is better prevent I change in between 70 up to 90.000 km. Forgot to mention keep an eye on the dynamic fluid level it doesn’t show up on the panel I discovered when searching the coolant reservoir is near it this reservoir believe you can identify those reservoir’s by seeing the manual on page 260+.
Exactly, designers pushed into 'more is more' toys and whizzybits...which are great, till they don't work...Look at the reliability of S and SL class.Mercs, and the resulting price crash
I bet the L322 is better off road than the L460. 23" wheels with low profile tyres won't get you very far in mud. In 10 years or so that L460 will be an electrical nightmare
I have had the privilege of having the 3.6 v8 diesel 2007 and currently driving the 4.4 v8 diesel 2011. The 4.4 is so much smother and quieter, pulls effortlessly and is my choice. Unfortunately with them being so sophisticated it will cost you in repairs but that's the price to pay for a great all rounder. Once you have had one you will be hooked regardless the cost💰💰💰💰💷💷💷💷
I had a late 2007 3.6tdv8 and loved it looked at getting later 4.4 but got a deal on an l405 4.4 and what a difference. Just the best wagons in the world to drive
I had 322, 405 LWB and now 460 LWB. The best is to have all of them including 1993 Classic end of the line. All different but with the strong common DNA.
I do notice that older L322 and L319 sport break more necks when on the road than new ones. The sleek design don’t cause that impact, impression as the older ones. Now regarding maintenance I prefer older ones due to labor time requirements, it doesn’t take much time to separate chassis from the mono block and put the hands on the engine ( in one day everything can be done) on the newer ones it requires one full day to disassemble the engine plugs and sensors to lift the mono block. And time is money period.
Just bought my 2nd L322 3.0lt diesel, (1st was V8 petrol), and I love it!! 2005 with just 120,000 on the clock, yeah expensive to run, repairs can also be expensive - but 4k to buy! No brainier for me.

Aesthetically, I'd still have the L322. Just not enough of the 2007- 2010 diesel models in NZ to give us some choice. I would love to have one in Forest Green with tan upholstery. I do miss the 2002 series 2 Disco I owned a few years ago.
I owned a 2007 L322 Black on Black with a Supercharged 4.2 Litre and could not fault it nor did it ever let me down. I owned second hand from 2012 - 2023. Still miss her and her classic style and driving ability. A magnificent contender in the bush as well and felt like a real four wheel drive. The engine really purred. I now own a L405 AB Supercharged 5.0 litre and she drives with a lot more comfort however still has the power to push. I recently drove a brand new L460 Range Rover (not completely spec'd) and whilst the ride was luxurious, all the 1 percenter's were missing, and the car cost a bomb, and it made me desire my L322 even more.

As an owner of both the L460 & L405, I can definitely appreciate the L322 and its origins. But I'm realistic to know that it is nowhere near the best Range Rover ever.
L460 looks lovely - but not a fan of the digital display. I will stick with my L405, L322 & P38 until deprecation makes the L460 sub £30k… The original luxury 4x4 still keeps its crown in my view.😊
For me it has to be the L322 4.4tdv8 looks like a range rover should. But the real reason I like buttons and the screen in the new one would drive me mad. I also think those screens are dangerous as you have to take your eyes off the road to operate them.
As others have said, peak ranger rover is probably the 4.4TDV8 from 2010-2012. The reason, better power, better 8 speed gearbox, very analogue and it was very well built. Though the L405 looks great and has less rust issues a lot of people didn’t like them when they upgraded. The 3.6 L322 was a fine car but the refresh from 2010 made a huge difference.
Range Rover has never appealed to me so I wouldn't buy either. I'm simply not of the mindset target audience that RR attracts. However, if I were forced into making a decision between the L322 and the L400, I would most definitely go for the L322. I currently drive a 2019 Land Rover Discovery 5 which also has proper buttons and the very nice rotary gear selector. This is my first automatic and to be honest, whilst the gearbox is very smooth and the car an excellent tow vehicle and very good off-road, I really miss a manual transmission gearbox. Automatics are just so effing boring and unless you have the automatic light checking function, it is impossible to self-check whether the reversing lights on the trailer are working or not. You can do that with a manual without the need for fancy technology. How do I check the brake lights? Easy, with one leg from a broken camera tripod which I can expand to wedge between the brake pedal and the seat just enough so that the lights come on. I would really like the new Defender, but I am most likely going to go for the new Land Cruiser 250 as they have more practical sized wheels and tyres than this stupid nonsense of low-profile tyres on 4x4s. That makes buying an extra set of wheels for winter tyres much, much cheaper and here in Japan, winter tyres are mandatory (chains as well in some regions) in bad weather. It is a road traffic offence to drive in icy or snowy conditions with normal 'summer' tyres. Also, I am sick and tired of LR Japan holding the car for 5 days or more just to do an oil change and change filters. Unfortunately, independent garages will not touch foreign cars with a barge pole so one is limited to going to the dealer. So, a Toyota starts to make more sense. Although I prefer the Defender and the availability of a proper European towbar and 13 pin electrics instead of Toyota Japan's stupid predilection with the American style 'hitch member' and the daft round 7 pin American socket that NO ONE even in Japan uses. If you thought the UK had its head up the American backside, wait until you see Japan. Both countries vying for top spot as the biggest US arse licker.
Sadly, the new US market Range Rovers do not have the orange, horizontal indicator lights. You have to make do with red, vertical indicator lights integrated into the brake lights.
Always loved the looks of these RR... But my oh my they do go wrong 🥴. A mate had one, it was a fantastic sofa on wheels and pretty fast with the supercharger, but it kept on having issues every 5 minutes. It was always like a very lit Christmas tree on the dash 😂😂😂
Brilliant video! I do love the seamless beautiful looks of the new one, but everything on a screen would drive me nuts. Haven't the money to buy one anyway, if I did, would I? I don't know. I would have liked the last of the L322 with 4.4V8 diesel and 8 speed ZF box, only in the UK the annual road tax on them is currently £710 per year, (unless you have a blue badge), and no 7 seats. Perhaps against my better mechanical judgement I bought a '66' plate Discovery 4, ZF 8speed, 7 seats, (£415 R/tax) brilliant off road and towing, always got that little worry about the engine (SDV6) but after years of contemplating, an itch I just had to scratch in the end, I'm pretty handy with spanners and got a GAP IID tool, I absolutely love it ! always fingers crossed though!
The L322 is a belting car and drives really well. Who cares about 0-60 times or top speeds in a luxury barge? We will be upgrading the head unit in ours this year which will bring it up to date and give it the modern touch it is lacking. The other benefit of the L322 is it will still be where you parked it 🤣
I can't comment on the L460 but I had a 4.4tdv8 L322, brought a 5 year old L405 and did not like it so much, the eletric tailgate and seat fold was a pain complicating a simple task that takes seconds, also all the touch screen stuff, several taps replacing a knob turn! I found the L322 seats more comfotable on a long run. They were both OK off road which is something I do negotiating muddy tracks when fishing. I ended up selling the L405 and went back to the L322 which I prefered. I still have the L322 now and will keep it as long as I can. Not sure what I would replace it with, probably a Defender.
I was thinking of updating my 2011 4.4.tdv8 for a L405 but I have heard a few people saying they regretted doing that. I think I will wait for the Defenders to become more affordable as well.
The repair costs of a L322 is not to be worried about. The trick is to change the oil often, that avoids turbo failure and the engine will last forever. Compared to the costs of similar BMW, Mercedes and Audis I think will be in the favor of the Range Rover. And I am speaking of the L322 from the Ford-era, the 3.6 and the 4.4 TDV8. Those cars had upgraded and stronger suspension parts than those from the BMW-era. I've had my 3.6 TDV8 for three years now, done more than 40 000kms, and I think it is the best car I have ever owned.
@@philiptidmarsh I did the same thing, the 4.4tdv8 L322 really is as good as it gets. I regretted the L405 within 24 hours of having it.. Its just simply not the same. You'll feel a part of you missing. Also the L405 is annoying car to drive... you can tell it was designed to be sold to school mums .I sold it after 2 years and got myself a nice and cheap 4.4 AJV8 petrol L322. Will drive it until the wheels fall off.
Your L322 looks in good condition inside and out - reckon you got a good deal for £3k. I know you had an engine bill, probably the obligatory EGR and turbo - change EGR Valve around 80k miles if you can.
I’d choose the L322 even if they were the same price. It looks like a Range Rover and is much more classy. The L460 is better looking than the L405 though, especially the rear. Too much cost reduction replacing the nice buttons and knobs with a LCD screen. Nobody wants to dig through a menu to turn on heated seats or make other simple adjustments. If I was designing a new Range Rover I’d start with the L322 and make some small changes, maybe even make it look more like the original Classic. I would focus more on the off-road capability too and offer a full suite of off-road accessories. The Range Rover should offer both supreme luxury and off-road capability, without sacrificing one over the other. It should maintain that fine balance.
I think it depends on what you want. I would'nt like to take a 130k pound Range Rover off road, especially considering the materials that have been used in the interior and the costs of getting it repaired after having been off road with it! I would go for the L322 every time
Interesting cover. But would you buy without a warranty! Because of the typical repair costs of an older Land Rover. Having said that, they are a lovely vehicle.
looked at the new RR whilst buying a high spec edition Defender. Was torn between the two for a while. However the Defender won, due in part to my age (not old yet), the fact that I am a farmer and also the stuffy/snooty image the new RR gives off. The Defender, can handle it all, after all you can take it across the fields, out to the theatre at night and take the kids plus their bikes out, all in luxury. No contest for me tbh. The new RR will suit those that never go offroad, are older and just want luxury and space
Аналогичный по расцветке L322 в комплектации Autobiography c оригинальным обвесом выглядит для своей цены и общего впечатления соответственно не хуже 100%. Но точно L322 maximum-maximorum - The TOP! L460, как и L405 за свои деньги оба TOP!
I was lucky enough to own both an L322 and an L405. The L322 just felt some much more solid than the L405 and had far fewer issues. The L460 just gets even further away from that feeling of solidity and replaces it with gadgets. Not for me.
Don't know about the UK experience but both of these have an absolutely terrible reputation here in Australia. Maybe the far hotter weather doesn't agree with them? Dunno.
Ngl I thought it was a L405. The front end is basically identical. It’s only the rear that’s really different. Even the interior is almost identical to the L405 other than the giant iPad screen.
The autobiography base model is not the most expensive. The ultimate autobiography is the top level, usually less 500 made, and then you have an autobiography black edition
@chucky2316 I Always knew that Toyota fan boys were around the corner. A Brand New Toyota Land cruiser Prado had to be flat beded, because the Australian journalist who was reviewing it waged it through a small Water paddle, damaging it's hybrid batteries and electric motors,Toyota reliability is a myth.
Trust me you don't want to be doing over 140miles an hour in a four wheel drive, the older ones are more reliable and by old I mean the P38s and older they did what it says on the tin reliably, if you want a work motor for off roading buy older ones.
Just like you, I'd rather have the new one but having said that, just like all Range Rover enthusiasts, an L322 is a must have Range Rover so will be cool to have both 😂
Guy who bought the new Range Rover has the resources but might lack taste. He could have chosen any tasteful colour scheme but ended up choosing an Arab Pimp black on black on black one. There are things money can’t buy, and aesthetic sense is one of them. 😅
What is wrong with black on black? Black leather ages SLOWER. If you bought a RR with tan or light colored seats they show soiling, wrinkles, and cracking way too fast.
I had six Range Rovers in the 80s and 90s and nothing was truer than you needed two - one to drive while the other one was n the repair shop. These days I can’t afford them. 😊
It would seem the police dont really care what is on the road these days. Followed an S3 audi home only had 2 lights working on back and at least 5 not working obviously he was driving like a delinquent and when I went passed him he was chatting on his mobile phone. I own a broken L320 2.7 tdv6 re building engine after belt tension sheared off the oil pump. What joy😢. You might say it's my own fault for owning a range rover sport and not a proper range rover😂
L322 is just a old tractor , I had a 2002 model td6 new and a tdv8 new , now have a 2019 l405 worlds apart will purchase a l460 next year which will be another massive leap forward
I'm jealous of anyone who can afford to buy an L460 but of all the ways you can spec one and people choose black paint, black interior and black wheels. Come on!

Thanks for watching!
Anything before the Classic Softdash because old ones (pre-1994) do not have air suspension!
I would go for the L322 every time
That number plate!!
L322!!!
Interesting cover. But would you buy without a warranty! Because of the typical repair costs of an older Land Rover. Having said that, they are a lovely vehicle.
L322 are mint and more reliable however if you like monden luxury id go with an l405 for the extra. But each to there own.
Max I'd have your car and pocket £97 grand thanks! 😂
Same lol
😂😂😂😂
Great comment Tariq 😂👏
Also, big chance £97 grand will be 1 million in 5 years when you invest it in btc. So an L322 could save you 1M.
Rear end looks like a eurotaxi
Nice video
Thanks!
The L322 has more engine and transmission variants than breakfast egg in an American diner. Which is the best option?
Much prefer the L322 interior
L322 is better than the new one. More style and class. Displays for controls is actually just cheaper than physical buttons
looked at the new RR whilst buying a high spec edition Defender.
Defiantly the older one, it looks far better looking and much more cheaper
Great till it breaks down .Or you have to fill it up
I was lucky enough to own both an L322 and an L405. The L322 just felt some much more solid than the L405 and had far fewer issues. The L460 just gets even further away from that feeling of solidity and replaces it with gadgets. Not for me.
Great review and love your content on all Range Rover. Just get Troy to buy another Range Rover.
Thanks Mark, I’ve sent him your comment don’t worry 😂👍
You never know, I could be swayed back Mark.
@@tro3y please do Troy the Audi is just not you the content with the Range Rover was the best. Your L460 was epic and the SV.
Even Clarkson and harrys garage say the L322 is the best !!!💯 I rest my case 👊
It really is!
The L322 or previous iterations will never be mistaken for a Discovery... Range Rover seem to have forgotten their mantra...
Don't know about the UK experience but both of these have an absolutely terrible reputation here in Australia. Maybe the far hotter weather doesn't agree with them? Dunno.
Put the 4.4 tdv8 in the new defender.🎉
Ngl I thought it was a L405. The front end is basically identical. It’s only the rear that’s really different.
Even the interior is almost identical to the L405 other than the giant iPad screen.
The autobiography base model is not the most expensive. The ultimate autobiography is the top level, usually less 500 made, and then you have an autobiography black edition
Q, Why do you make statements and then say "just kidding?' Good content!
L322 for ever
The Range Rover has a stately and regal presence that you will never get in a Toyota Land cruiser.
Yeah but the Toyota won't be on the back of a rac or aa wagon
@chucky2316
I Always knew that Toyota fan boys were around the corner.
A Brand New Toyota Land cruiser Prado had to be flat beded, because the Australian journalist who was reviewing
it waged it through a small Water paddle, damaging it's hybrid batteries and electric motors,Toyota reliability is a myth.
The price difference and depreciation + running costs /repairs is a no brainier.
Your Chauffeur is the only person who should be driving the L460. Same goes for the Mercedes S-Class.
The personalised number plate does not help.
Trust me you don't want to be doing over 140miles an hour in a four wheel drive, the older ones are more reliable and by old I mean the P38s and older they did what it says on the tin reliably, if you want a work motor for off roading buy older ones.
Post l322 range rover don't really appeal to me. I try to like l405 but eventually forgot. On second thought l460 rear look interesting.
I would personally go with the l405. I know the new one is nice but doesn't do it for me. I would buy new x5 instead
Which is 'better' not best.
Thanks mate. Well spotted - just fixed it
The expensive one looks cheaper than the cheap.
Just like you, I'd rather have the new one but having said that, just like all Range Rover enthusiasts, an L322 is a must have Range Rover so will be cool to have both 😂
Totally agree!
L322 is the better all rounder RR
I had six Range Rovers in the 80s and 90s and nothing was truer than you needed two - one to drive while the other one was n the repair shop. These days I can’t afford them. 😊
That is ridiculous. They should have made the necessary improvements to make it reliable. I wish consumers would SUE them with a class action lawsuit
The L322 will take the dogs and me offroad, the L460 will carry my wife and me to the concert hall.
I have no idea why you wouldn’t be arrested within five minutes driving around with that number plate.
Come on!
No comparison. The old one hands down for me.
I prefer4.4TDT
My Love Only JLR & RR ❤ $50M Dream Comes True😂
None of them will run long enough to outlast the tires they drive on.
Bradford spec.
Good review,, I would have your car ,,,
I appreciate that!
No such thing as a cheap Range Rover.
Sadly, you’re correct
Awful number plate ruins it as do the black wheels.
I miss my L322 but Khans’ ULEZ 🤷🏽♂️
Shame for this L460 to be sitting on such ridiculous looking low profile tyres!
I wish it was possible to order one with regular non low profile tires?
Style over substance!
I prefer the older models. The new ones are catering to pop stars and the newly-minted bling crowd.
Shame the ULEZ has all but killed owning an L322 in and around London 😢
Big shame!
Dear God that number plate is pathetic... :-(
Cool presenter.
Thanks 😎🙌
I like both. Except the fat bottom, of the new one.
Steer well clear of ANY new JLR product with the Ingenium engine. Complete DOG!
That shitty new RR 3.0litre diesel engine won’t last long. 6 cylinder 😂😂😂😂😂
Wot about the l405
I’m going to be doing a L405 vs L322 video soon
The new Range Rover is a Mall Princess. No one buying it is gonna let it touch dirt.
I guess the point is the new Range Rover will still do it all.
Who will be off-roading in their £140 k G Waggon,or even Bentley or Rolls Royce suv’s?
