21 Favourite Films from the 1970's

  • Inspired by the ‪@timtalkstalkies‬ channel community challenge, here are my (current) 21 Favourite Films from the 1970's. Films in my selection gained an extra point if they were set in the 70's, or evoked a feeling of the 70's.
Harvey Keitel stars in 3 of these films and was removed from a fourth.
Harrison Ford, Robert De Niro, Jack Nicolson and Anatoly Solonitsyn are each in two of these films.
The films also feature singers Mick Jagger and Toni Basil and comedian Richard Pryor.
Most featured Directors are Andrei Tarkovsky and Martin Scorsese (2 films each). Neither surpassed their 1970's output, but Tarkovsky has a better excuse.
    The films are:
    The Devils
    James Bond: Diamonds Are Forever
    Star Wars
    Taxi Driver
    The Texas Chainsaw Massacre
    Get Carter
    Going Places
    Apocalypse Now
    Chinatown
    Straw Dogs
    Aguirre, the Wrath of God
The Killing of a Chinese Bookie
Days and Nights in the Forest
    Silent Running
    Stalker
    Mean Streets
    Gina
    Blue Collar
    Five Easy Pieces
    Solaris
    Performance
The clips used here are for criticism and commentary within the bounds of fair use. This is a transformative effort with different expression (commentary and positive criticism) and different in character relative to the original works. The amount and substantiality of the portions used in relation to the work as a whole is a minimum necessary. These clips avoid story spoilers and inclusion here does not negatively affect the market value of any of these works. This video is not for profit.

The 70's and 80's was a golden time for movies, both big and little ones. Be cool if there was a movie channel that just played movies from the 60's through the 80's.

This is what a list should be. Real personality, real depth ... a clear understanding of the variety of cinema around the world and one that shows dedication, not just regurgitation of the usual popular suspects. Most of these demonstrate the human-scaled and humane dimension of cinema that today's corporate hacks have no clue about. Many of my own favorites are on this list as well. Nicely done.

A great list of movies I'd want to revisit in 2024. Off the top of my head and consulting Wikipedia, hopefully these movies listed also find an audience, first time or rewatching. In no real order, Capricorn one(1978), Dirty Mary & Crazy Larry (73), Silver Streak (76), The Frisco kid (79), 1941(79), Deer Hunter (79?), Who'll stop the rain (78), North Dallas 40(79), Charlie Varrick (73), Rollerball (75), Slither (73), Parallax view (74), Killer Elite (75), Race with the devil (75), Night moves (75), Hunting party (71), The conversation (74), Young Frankenstein (74), The long goodbye (73), The Wild Geese (78), Animal house ( 78), Assault on Precinct 13(76), Thunderbolt and Lightfoot (73?), The Enforcer (76), Sugarland Express(73), Convoy (78), The driver(78), Paper moon(73), Barry Lyndon (75), What's up Doc?(73?), Deliverance (71?), and Meatballs(79?). Thank you if you read through these and may want to watch some of them.

Another few to add to the list, Electra glide in Blue (73), Soldier Blue (70) , Darker than amber (70) and Outlaw Josie Wales (76), which could still be Clint Eastwood's best Western. And Play Misty for me (71?), he's directorial debut. Have a good week and hope you enjoy the one's you haven't seen.

Great list. I didn't know two of the non-English speaking films but most of the others would make my 70s top 50. My only criticism is that all your choices are very... um... 'worthy'. A lot of the fun of "favourite" or "best" lists is down to the guilty pleasure factor. In other words, films that most critics ignore or trash. My 70s top 20 would have to include 'Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory', 'Fiddler on the Roof', 'That'll Be the Day' 'The Warriors' & 'Shampoo'! EXCELLENT CHOICES! Apart from 2 OR 3 you must have chosen for reasons that only had to do with things like directing, screenplays, scripts or ones that I simply had no interest in. My favs were all there:
Aguirre, Chinese Bookie,Chinatown, 5 Easy,Taxi Driver. Gert Carter and last but def not least, Performance! but I was amazed that you missed Badlands, The Man who fell and Dont Look Now
The thing that often upsets me is watching the really bad aging of some of my early 20’s heart throbs, most notably here were Nicholson and Depardieu wheras Harvey and Dustin are looking pretty fit.

70s were the best decade for music, and American movies (60s for foreign movies). Check out the movies: Harry and Tonto, Nashville, One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest, Network, A Woman Under The Influence
