4 Film Recommendations (in 60 seconds)
My movie month is off to a marvellous start. Here's 4 films I've watched this month (October'24) and I recommend watching.
The clips used here are for criticism and commentary within the bounds of fair use. This is a transformative effort with different expression (commentary and positive criticism) and different in character relative to the original works. The amount and substantiality of the portions used in relation to the work as a whole is a minimum necessary. These clips avoid story spoilers and inclusion here does not negatively affect the market value of any of these works. This video is not for profit.

I might have to check out that "Linda Linda Linda" movie. It looks like something I would enjoy. I already have "House" and enjoy it. I also have Sampo. I really like all those old folklore movies put out by Deaf Crocodile.

Hi Mike. Thanks for checking this out. Linda Linda Linda is a really nice subtle and surprising little film. All the characters are interesting and believable. I especially like Bae Doona as the Korean exchange student. Sampo might not be the best Ptushko but it's fun and memorable; Deaf Crocodile are putting together a fantastic library. And House is just bonkers 🤣.

@@thefilmclassic4210 Hej. I'm fortunate to have a couple of local friends with good taste in films and vast collections. I only really buy films I love or films that are difficult to find elsewhere. I have quite a lot of imports (many without subtitles 😆). I get streaming subscriptions for short periods and I also use websites like UA-cam (great for Russian and Italian films), Rarefilmm, The Internet Archive (where I found quite a lot of Indian films and documentaries). I hope that helps in some way and I hope you manage to find most of the films you want to see.

Fantastic video here Steve, with some really interesting choices. I'll whisper in hushed tones that while I certainly did enjoy Harakiri, I think it's enourmous standing did leave me a bit underwhelmed with the expectations I had going in. Great choice for cinematography, and also really interesting choice for best protagonist. Five Easy Pieces has been on my mind over the last couple months, and I really must watch it again. A good few here that I've not seen either, like Red Rocket which has been on my list for a while. Definitely keen to check out Sean Baker's films.

Glad to have some (secret) support for my Harakiri pick 😉. It is certainly good, and the final fight is incredible but I'm surprised it is the highest rated film on Letterboxd. I hope we get to see your choices for this quiz 😀

All I can say is that Sergei Bondarchuk's WAR AND PEACE might just topple some your other selections, and that Jill St. John was my all-time favorite Bond girl, slightly above Pussy Galore. P.S.: I wouldn't recommend the Criterion edition of WAR AND PEACE because they messed up the soundtrack, a major asset of the production; the Mosfilm HD version available on UA-cam is your best option as it presents the directional stereo sound correctly.

I like getting the perspectives while watching the clips. i like the insights, especially on films that I think are overrated like the couple of Tarkovsky's. The Good, The Bad and the Ugly was funny because it was the opposite experience for me, where my indifference at first viewing became more appreciative with time. 2000s was as good as the 70s extreme French and Japanese cinema. Suicide Club / Rape Me / irreversible./ Lost In Translation Some great Brit indie films Red Road The Children Sexy Beast. Ect from that list Zodiac Let The Right One In stands out. probably only beaten by The Girl With The Snake Tattoo 2009. Got so many great memories. 2010s not so obviously good but does have its nuggets. Last really good one for me the Accused / Spain 2018 Last DVD I ever bought. Spectre. Would only agree with half your list though. All time favourite Black Sunday 1974 which replaced the 1975 Schelsinger Day of The Locust which replaced Melville's Un Flic of 8 years at No1. Always fun to watch. I discovered the Ptushko fantasies thanks to you. THE UMBRELLAS OF CHERBOURG covers all three aspects for me. It's the greatest romantic film ever made in my opinion, with Catherine Deneuve more than adequate fulfilling the spectacle requirement for me. She's right up there with Liz Taylor and her entrance at Cinecitta in CLEOPATRA!

Hi Steve. Thanks so much for taking part. Three of these are ones I would have put into my choices so I’m not sure I’ll make that video now, haha. Love that you mentioned Long Weekend for sound, that’s a great choice. The Vast of Night also. I have not seen The Sword and the Dragon but see I can stream it so I will definitely be watching that soon, it absolutely looks as though it fulfills the spectacle category. Wish i could put clips into my videos, I’m not very techy. Great video

Hi Neil. It was good fun to do this. Yes, those Soviets certainly went for the spectacular! I'd recommend all of the Aleksandr Ptushko films (if you like that sort of thing!). Solitary Ronin reviewed them on his channel, which is where I heard about them. I hope you'll reveal your favourites for this challenge, even if there are some overlaps.

Beautiful video and an excellent inclusion of all three categories. Kalatazov and Ptushko are some of my favourite discoveries since I started my UA-cam channel. Jaw-dropping. Quite simply, it's a reflection of the coexistence of the criminal world of the East End and the bohemian culture in London during the 1960s and 1970s,.explored through the darker side of the 1960s psychedelic dream and an exuberant and grimy ode to the sexual revolution, evoking cultural upheaval and identity crisis with rock 'n' roll verve.

I remember how LES VALSEUSES and STRAW DOGS just blew me away when I first saw them - and they still do. My favorite decade!!!! for so many things. Music, movies, WWII Greatest Generation, and so on... I've got so many of these on my watchlist already. Canterbury Tale and Bitter Rice in particular. Don't like The Third Man as much as most. I've seen Out of the Past. I am not a usual noir guy. In fact it's one of my least favorite genres. But I'd put that as one of my favorites. His Girl Friday is okay. Not my favorite screwball though.. Children of Paradise is great.Great Expectations is a great Lean film. Jean Simmons is great but I didn't like the older actress they chose for her older version. Bicycle Thieves is definitely one of my top five. In no particular order, here are mine: Air Force (1943) Bicycle Thieves (1948) Notorious (1946) The Best Years of Our Lives (1946) Remember the Night (1940) In Which We Serve (1942) I Married A Witch (1942) Waterloo Bridge (1940) The 49th Parallel (1941) The Heiress (1949) Bambi (1943) Battleground (1949) Meet John Doe (1941) Shadow of a Doubt (1943) The Shop Around the Corner (1940) It's A Wonderful Life (1946) Yellow Sky (1948) The Lady Eve (1941) Penny Serenade (1941) The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp (1943)
