  • Video tutorial on how to remove the front door panel on a BMW E39. The video does cover on the removal of the driver's side door panel, the only difference with the passenger side is that you won't have a large main window switch panel to be removed, but rather just a single small switch that is similarly clipped in. This particular car I am working with here today is a 1997 BMW 540i sedan.

    Tools/Supplies Needed:
    -small standard/flat screwdriver
    -standard/flat screwdriver
    -phillips screwdriver
    -nylon wedge trim tool
    -tape
    -socket set
    Procedure:
-disconnect your battery first as we will be working around an area equipped with an airbag
-remove the main window switch panel using a standard screwdriver, wrap the tip in tape so it doesn’t scratch the door or plastic and slowly work it around the edge of the switch panel
-once the panel is far enough out, use your hands to remove the rest
-on the backside there will be three electrical connectors which need to be removed
-first one disconnects by placing a standard screwdriver on the side and pulling the slide clip over while pulling the plug out at the same time
-next two connecters needs to have the small tab depressed, then slide the lever over and pull up on the connector at the same time as well
-tuck the wires into the hole once done so the connectors won’t bind up during removal
    -unscrew the lock cap
-unclip the door light on the bottom of the panel from the backside, unplug the electrical connector and feed the wire back into the hole
-remove the phillips screw inside the vent by the door jam
-using a small standard screwdriver wrapped with some tape so it won’t scratch the plastic, remove the plastic cap in the door handle pocket
-remove the phillips screw hidden behind that cap
-using the nylon trim tool, pop it in between the door panel and door assembly, then slowly work it around and unsnap the clips along the sides and bottom
-lift the panel upwards, there will be a snap clip in behind the pull handle which can be slide out of it’s place
-feed the plastic handle casing through the hole
-the top of the panel just unclips from the top and the chrome trim stays in place on the door
-disconnect the memory switch panel electrical connector
    -disconnect the speaker wiring
-remove the window switch panel wiring from the hole
-remove the wire from the light on the bottom of the door panel
-the clip from the handle does need to be removed for door panel installation which is done by using needle nose pliers to depress the metal spring clip and remove the plastic portion, then slide it back onto the door panel

    great video, thank you!
and as i am replacing yet another part, i just realized the real reason why these E39s are so long lived: we end up replacing all its parts during the course of a lifetime - which actually is fun, in a nerdy kind of way. they are so easy to work on, like tinkertoys for adults 😂keep up the good work
    👍

That was super helpful to have all of the clips pointed out. I referenced the image a few times and was able to avoid breaking stuff. Oh, except for the seat trim that cracked when I sat on the outside of the seat while working. The marvels of BMW plastic...Thanks for the video.

No problem, happy to help! If you have the same seats as me, trim from an E38 will work if you can't find E39 parts.

A couple of things I noticed when doing this, when removing the window button module to lever it out needed a screwdriver not a trim removal tool, but on my cream interior, without anything under the screwdriver when it levers off the plastic trim it leaves a permanent line so I had to put a dozen or so post it notes there to stop my making it any worse, which worked. When taking the door trim off, my trim stuck where the locking knob is at the top corner. The knob wouldn't screw off at all, I turned and turned it but it didn't go anywhere, mine is a facelift E39, so I had to get the trim section over the top, which was made difficult by the fact that the end clip wouldn't come off. I tried to force it free of the wood inside the door trim with a screwdriver but it didn't work, and after stretching up the chrome window piece as it was stuck to the door insert, I figured out that you can slide the whole door trim inwards by an inch and then it pulled off really easily. So I bent the chrome piece a bit which is unfortunate.

Had to replace the chrome piece on the inside of the door. Yes, it's a thing, even those can fade that hard, clear coat was gone. Really was surprised about it, managed to probably get the last 1 they've had at the local deal, replaced the part around december last year, the new part was from like January 2010. Well, at least it stayed in the same decade, haha. You really helped me a lot on this one too!
Also, watch out for those stupid clips, in my case they've dry rotted on such a harsh level, they basically became ceramic! Cut my thumb on one quite bad, so watch out for those nasty lil bastards!

When I re installed the panel I had an extra female room wire with a red white, blue white wire, coming from the door itself. What does it connect to? I have a 99 528i

One question, for e39 530i how many airbags are there? Is there any airbag other than front panel?

Try realoem.com for BMW part numbers. They'll have a complete breakdown of exactly what you need, then you can find the parts based on the part numbers.

BMW and their idiotic solutions, one dumber than the other... If window switch doesn't come off this evening, it'll taste the cutter
