The circumstances surrounding this video aren't too great but at least it's a video you guys can enjoy while remembering the thunderous Neil Peart who changed the progressive rock game forever with his legendary compositions and drumming technique. They didn't call him The Professor for nothing.
I've internalized this song from listening to it so much over the years so I tried to make the fills as on point as possible, I definitely missed a few hits here and there but it's still a Rush song so it's still nutty as hell. Neil definitely did not make it easy for us. And I realize that there's about a thousand Tom Sawyer covers on UA-cam, but here's mine! I hope Neil likes it.
Thank you, Neil Peart, for your years of inspiration and wisdom behind the kit and on the page. Your legacy will echo throughout the ages.

Slap dat bass
Well done, Jon! Farewell to the King.
@@blueplasma slappa-da-bass
Good job man. I never really cared for Rush, but Peart was a king and I'm sure all of us learned alot from him.
In memory of the professor my dudes
Holy balls, didn't know you were such a talented drummer dude.
Thanks bruv, big fan 😘
Gus Johnson my roommate plays your videos non stop. Can you please make him stop? I need to study.
When you're just watching a guy playing drums and you look in the comments and see one of the most underrated youtuber on youtube. I love you bro!
Holy balls indeed
Gus Johnson how tf did you show up here 😂. Keep up the good vids man you always make me chuckle
“Its your favorite thicc boy” i cant disagree with that kind of confidence
Damn straight
Better than I expected, considering my first video was your Evanescence vocal cover.
Same algorithm lol
All those All-Star covers have ultimately led to this day, this cover, this tribute.
Thank you
yeaaah to reveal that this guy Really NAIL the drums!!!
Impressive, considering he's playing with 1/10th of Neil's drum kit.
what me and 1000s more thought to
You don't even need half of Neil's kit to play this song.
(@ FA) We knew that before you told us....
Letterman referred to his kit as a time machine. Great.
And he's 10x Neil's weight.
the fact that you absolutely killed this cover with a four piece drum kit blows my mind
Definitely
A four pieces is enough to play anything
Kriss Kriss This^ it’s esentially less to think about. Also makes for a killer sound
No offence to the memory of Neal Peart, but no drummer truly needs a multi-piece drum set. It's all for show.
It's all you need.
Neil Peart would surely be proud of this, damn good job.
Oh I literally just wrote that in my comment
Damn fine job wonderfully played Neil was with you wonderful tribute
So was I. Actually it was pretty damn great. Spot on. Two thumbs up 👍🏻
Rest In Peace Neil. We also lost the legend Kobe today, sad times man. Thank you for this tribute.
Just Some Guy without a Mustache not to be distrspectful but i found you again
And Sean Reinert 2 days ago. THE best metal drummer of all time
You mean the overpaid bazkitball playa? Good lordy what's we gonna do now?

Neil Peart rest his soul, was known or one might say notorious for having enormous drum sets, and here, you are doing justice with this song using such a small set...you are a big man with a big heart, and a great drummer!
Well done!!!
Trudat
I thought the same thing... wondered how you were going to do the solo with your kit... but you nailed it bro! Great job!
YEAH!!! I concur !!! I was wondering how you were going to give it justice.. And I sit and listened with complete amazement!!! Great job you nailed it on a small kit !! Proving that sometimes less is really more.. Outstanding!!!
damn dude, you can really play!
Yep
yup
Thats literally what my teacher said yesterday 😂😂
@PaPa-D yup
@@gonzbergtv yep
Impressive. Not because you do it on a small kit, Neil didn't NEED the large kit to sound large. He too could've done it. All the percussion goodies only broadened the sounds, but not the core framework. Proven very effectively by this gifted guy. What I'm mostly blown away by is the massive amount of views accrued in a span on only a couple weeks. Your passion and words mean a lot to everyone viewing this it appears as well. Do it!
Having started playing drums at the age of 6 years old. It has been about 8 year's since I've picked up any sticks. I am an audio recording engineer at my church so I've kept busy doing that. I too am a large thick guy, 375lbs. I have been self conscious about performing in front of crowds being probably the heaviest man in church. I'm now 60 and really have been considering playing again. You are an inspiration to me. Even us big guys can lay down the beat and rock on! Thanks. I think I'll be picking up me sticks and jamming on one of our DW kits refining my chops. Then surprise everyone in my Celebrate Recovery meeting by playing with the worship team. Again, thanks for the wake up that I needed.
Play in front of the church... dont be selfish in a since. Other may really love to hear you and the band may need you. God bless you.
At first I was like, he doesn't have enough drums how's he doing to pull that off...can he? Oh, yeah he can I guess 💯
Neil Peart has said himself he could play every rush song on a 4pc kit
It's not the size of the kit that matters, its how you use it ;)
Jordan Cervantes less is more...most jazz drummers can play circles around rock drummers with less than half the kit
It's not the amount of drums, it's how you use them
It looks more impressive on bigger kit but it isn’t needed.
0:00 into the video: “hey guys your favourite thicc boi”
That killed me 😂
nice analogy
Haha
He is fluffy.. And a rocking drummer.
Why?
Nice to see the younger generations still listening to Rush in 2020. Great work sounded awesome.
It’s not size of the kit or the man. But the size of his heart and determination that gets shit done! Love you and that kit bro. Much respect thank you.
AMEN!! You did Neil proud. Keep ROCKIN🤘 YOUR meant to be doing this. Thanks for sharing.
His heart is probably huge aswell
Tango Theo it’s probably struggling ffs
YEAH AND I WOULD OVE TO HAVE BEEN THERE TO FEEL THAT BASE DRUM!!!!
Bullshit. He's amazing. With an amazing talent and heart. But. We can't encourage unhealthy living. I'm guessing his calorie intake daily will affect him and his life expectancy. Only HE can change those habits
This guys got the rhythm. He’s also got the soul.
The fact that you did this with only 2 toms makes it even more impressive
I am no drummer, but it is, impressive.
Hugg Niceman If you can’t play two toms you can’t play three
Hugg Niceman it sounds wonderful and I’m a guitarist
The multi toms aren't used much in the song
What's the difference how many toms you have? How you hit them is just the same.
"Rush did so much for music."
Indeed! What a great tribute!
Neal, we will never forget you! 😢
Thank you for what you left us!
I hope people can appreciate how hard this song is and how spotless this cover was
There were a couple of hiccups, but they only make you appreciate it more. It is a difficult song and even a great player like this guy doesn't get it 100%. There is hope for the rest of us =)
Yeah he was right in the pocket and only missed a couple hits. And on a four piece at that.
@@ModernGentleman impressive!
Sorry boss, I been playing this cover for decades.I can appreciate he doesn't have the full kit, & honestly, I too have played this song on a 5 piece in a bar at a jam night cuz it wasn't my kit, & I was invited up.He did about 95% accurate, but their were a few fills that weren't quite right & a few missed snare hits in the guitar solo section. That being said, most people wouldn't notice & its a tribute to the legend himself, so I give it full marks in the spirit it was intended, but my OCD won't allow me to agree with the "spotless" characterization.
This lardass was not spotless.
Great tribute to Neil. He was my main influence also from the day i heard Rush for the first time ❤️ another of my biggest drum heroes who changed my style died yesterday Sean Reinert. His work on Deaths album Human was mind-blowing for a teenager playing rock and heavy on drums. Those two players has influenced me more than any other drummers have ever. May they both rest in peace ❤️
Two Legends in one month... 💔 They both rest in peace, we will never forget their legacy.
Sean's Death felt like a brick to the face when a friend told me...
Dear self-proclaimed 'thicc boy'. Whats your history with the drums? How long have you been playing? Private lessons? Definitely impressed with your skill level. This song is no joke.
3:50 The part you clicked for
And it wasn't a wasted click at all. Damn.
Yeah that whole series is so amazing!
@SmokeRingHalo ~ thank you; you're doing gods work....
HOLY! Man does it!
SOLID. I felt it. I felt Neil.
I walked into the Hotel Room, and my mom said "Neil Peart Died." I actually started to cry.
You hear about people dying, but not the best.
I saw a post on Facebook and thought it was fake like a lot of other fake death posts, when I found out it was real I cried, I haven't cried in a many years and it surprised me, I felt like an idiot but I guess I really didn't realize how much RUSH meant to me.
The fact that your mom knows who Neil was is impressive!!
We are an Anti-Digital Music family, but 2 of my 4 brothers like Rap.
I found out at work. As soon as I made it into the break room the tears hit
EnnuiVision lol
He's not gonna play Tom Sawyer on that little...
Oh. Okay.
That's exactly what I thought xD
he did it well
That's what i thought...killed it.
bearded rider Epic comment
@therainman777 well in comparison to Niel's kit, this one is fairly basic (but a great kit nonetheless). But even with just the basics and only two toms he played a great cover. Quick with the sticks and the right foot. Only missed a couple of hits and he was right in the pocket. I've never heard him play before and I was pleasantly surprised. I thought he rocked 🤘
The warrior has exited, his reserve was a quiet defence, his love and life was deep...
“Favorite thick boi” 😂😂😂😂 hefty or not be you brother. Your burning the kit up!!!!! 🔥
Amazing drummer, definitely not just the “all star guy”. Keep it up with the covers, you rock!
Boa cayres
Nice name
John, I just wish Neil would have had a chance to see this. Like everyone said you smashed this with just a standard kit which is huge! You are inspiring to everyone everywhere!
Good job. There is a tiny ray of hope, that there is something after passing away.Neill what be proud or is proud to see this.
agreed SourDchifer
Fair play, not just for the cover but for having the balls to attempt it and put it out there, knowing that their could be scrutiny. Well done my man, great stuff, big respect 👍
Wow this was insane. Seriously excellent job
That's a sick kit and the cover is on point I appreciate the fact that your sound is clean yet still raw its you playing with no edit.
Right? Slayed this shit
Hats off to you man great Memorial couldn't have played it better myself much respect!!!
I can honestly say that Neil would be SO PROUD!!! My jaw was agape the entire video...Im absolutely blown away Jon...THAT WAS AMAZING!! Spot on at every point...You sir, are an inspiration!!!

Damn fine job. Never seen anyone play a Rush song on such a small kit. Didn't think it possible. You proved my assumption wrong. Kudos. R.I.P. Neil
Neil Peart always was my biggest influence as well 😢😭😢😭 I picked up drums when I was 3 years old. I’m 11 now and I will always remember Mr.Peart. I think he would be very proud of you.
Keep going with em young one. Do it for all of us that put the sticks down. Drum on
It's okay to keep drumming , I am 59 and people ask me how long I have been playing , I reply , I was born with sticks in my hands because God gave me the talent to play. So you must seek out God if you don't know Him already!!!
I also picked up drums when i was 3. Now im 13. Rip neil
I love how the drum part changes in subtle ways to respond to the phrases in the vocals and guitar, rather than just sticking to one beat for each section. This is the kind of musicianship that shows real talent and dedication.
WillyTheComposer that’s why he is the best ever to me personally. There are a million guys with great chops and just when someone reaches a pinnacle of skill another will come around and outdo him. How you pick the greatest players are the things you are talking about. Neil is unique I think he is easily the best writer of drum parts that ever lived
3:36 was sick
You don't play drums do you?
@@Danimal77 Your elitism is showing...
I fully agree!
Nah

One of the most efficient pieces of drumming I’ve ever witnessed. Totally captured the spirit of Neil’s art. Bravo
Thumbs up for pronouncing his last name correctly. Cheers
Killer job buddy
I found this on my feed because I'm a huge RUSH fan. I will admit that I didn't expect much because these types of tributes usually suck. But that was awesome! Even with the drum kit you have it was true to the song. Thanks for posting bro!
aside from the all star memes, you're actually a really kickass drummer! and may Neil rest in peace.

I was just thinking, "how on Earth did 643 people not like this?" This guy rocks.
Some people are haters, guarantee they couldn't have played it as good
or maybe they just, didn't like it
it's called an opinion y'all
the entire internet needs to stop complaining whenever people use the dislike button lmao
They're probably Justin Bieber fans.
626 thicc boys who were aiming for the like button.
Damn you pulling that off on a 4 piece is beyond impressive
It was an honor reading along to the sheet music . peart sent my teacher a post card after he tried to call
I watched Neil Peart say in an interview that Tom Sawyer was the hardest song for him to play. He said "yeah I love Tom Sawyer when even I play it right"
You rocked it man great tribute on a minimal kit. Mr.Peart would be proud!
Correction? Even when I "don't" play it right?? Not sure I'm asking.
I'm gonna tell my kids this was Neil Peart
Not cool dude
RiepApple ?
why?
Not funny
Or you could tell them that Neil Peart was Neil Peart.
Aside from the fact that you're about 90 drums short of a full Peart kit, that was a mighty fine cover.
You're one of the few people that actually pronounced his name the right way

2:47 is a pretty damn good moment in timing for you Jon. Great vid
Respect...most modern drummers don't take the time to learn how to do the bass like that...much props that you did that with a single peddle...loved it!
Jon, congratulations, you made neil so proud. Thank you for recording this masterpiece. You rule
The speech in the beginning really touch my heart. Very good cover with a perfect inspirational ending. Thank you. RIP Neil Peart
Bro you took away every excuse that I had when I picked up the sticks 28 years ago... you did EVERYTHING on a 4 piece kit...
You're a true inspiration to us who think big kits are a must...
Mr. Sudano ... Thanks for a great tribute to the greatest drummer of all time. I can’t get over how insane that 24x24 sounds. I didn’t know they did sizes like that.

For a drummer hell yeah. ❤️ For a music fan hell yeah ❤️
Abosolutley! Just received a copy on vinyl and have been playing it all weekend. 🤘
Yep
Just remember.........................
*This guy only needs 5% of Neil's drumkit just to play this*
You can play tom sawyer with two forks. Its just more fun with 50 toms
You know nothing about drums
@@fendertremolo9793 Yeah, I'm a bassist, but I would guess that all you need at the least to play this song is a hi-hat, bass drum, snare drum, high tom, floor tom, a ride and, 2 crashes. Not like 100 toms and 100 cymbals.
Jaysus big fella, I'd give my left arse cheek to play with half of that skill and soul. Thanks for a great upload, and I'm certain that our Neil's up there smiling. 👍🏴
Great cover Jon, I think 'The professor' would be proud of how far you've come as a drummer. keep it up brother.

The power and precision of this guys drumming is insane! One of my favourite covers so far!

Yes man. You definitely spent a lot of time with sticks in your hand you did a great job I enjoyed this video thank you for posting this
I edited this so the reply's make no sense
Needs more drums?
needs more Cowbell lol
It's never size... It's what you do with it. 😉
And gotta say, he killed it!
@rj zander you need to learn to use punctuation.
@rj zander Niel played sabians, his cymbals sound great over the track. The hi hat he's doing correct, in regards to the way Neil explained it's harder than it sounds... I know you saw that video. Maybe he is changing his diet and doing more exercise, maybe not, that's not your choice. Btw Paistes tend to cut too much, Neil played sabians, and the cymbals sound great in this cover even though they're not Paragons.
ManiacDrummer1212 He’s doing have time on the hi hat actually. Neil did 8th noted, a lot harder cus it’s so much faster
But this cover sounds good still. But you can tell the difference in those parts
I can't believe that you pulled it off on a four piece with 4 cymbals. Amazing, my dude.
One drummer to another.....Humble praise brother.........heartfelt tribute to the king!
One of my favorite quotes from Neil is “Infected with the God of drumming.” You’ve definitely got it brother.
I dont play drums but I cannot comprehend how someone can keep a different beat with each hand and feet, that shows some big time talent
Dave Spinola
Agreed!! i don’t play drums...but I do play the piano (and I play some pretty difficult stuff...Jerry Lee Lewis, Ray Manzarek, etc..) and I still can’t wrap my head around how it’s possible to play four different beats at one time, as drummers do. And then...throw in some vocals. :-)
@@garymoeller892 cmon now, piano still takes 2 hands and footwork, music is an art, you either got it or you dont. Sounds like you do, enjoy it!
Everyone is different, for me drums came so naturally, put me behind a guitar or piano or anything and I cannot make music. But with drums it was so easy and simple, and I think that’s why love playing them because you’re hands and feet are just everywhere in rhythm
adam kelly
...“because your hands and feet are everywhere in rhythm”.
I love that. Well said.
Jon, you’ve outdone yourself. This was insane. Made me tear up 🙌🙌🤟
I’ll always be amazed that a man that can play drums like this isn’t ripped from the constant motion and exercise that drumming is
I love that you're recording using only overhead mics. You can actually hear the "raw" in the drums. It's awesome. Too many people with their high end YT videos and all their mics. Takes away from the instrument and how it really sounds. Great job.
Just saw the snare and kick mics myself....which makes it even more impressive.

Had I not been watching and only listening I would have thought you had a huge kit! This is proof that if you have the chops you can make a “smaller” kit sound huge! GREAT JOB, Jon! RIP Neil!
Let me preface what I'm about to say with a simple thing that I come from a musical family yet I'm the only one with no talent yet my love of music is the strongest.
So from a fan's perspective, I applaud you. You are fantastic! God bless Rush and you too sir! You've made my day as I sit and wait for my wife who is having minor surgery. Great job!

I was about to pass the post by, but I’m glad I didn’t. Rush is one of my all time favorite bands. The talent of band as a whole were head and shoulders above many contemporary bands. Very few three piece bands could match the precision and depth of sound Rush made seem easy. ZZ Top is another. Neil Peart was a master percussionist no doubt, and truthfully I didn’t think anyone could come close. But you proved me wrong. On a minimalist drum set you were precise and almost note for note matched the song. I noticed only two minor rhythm breaks, but otherwise spot on! Well played!
see, a lovely and constructive comment. Lovely. Glad to know there is still some humanity left in this world.
Dayyyyummmm BOI! That was an excellent drum cover, well done
