Thanks for the reactions. I love seeing how musicians from different styles and genres check out styles of music they are not used to. Nice one dude. We are all friends across the world in music.
Like they said below, it's 4/4. All the polyrythmics are patterns on top. For really crazy double bass work, check out the drumcam version of their song Bleed!
there's a doc of Meshuggah recording an album and the guitarist is making coffee and says "I always lose the count when making coffee". the fucking irony
Thomas Haake is one of the best drummers in the world. His polyrhythms are seconds to none. I've played double double bass for near 40 years, and I'm still not close to the technical proficiency of this master of the kit. Listen to Bleed by these guys. It took Thomas 6 months to learn it. That's dedication.
Morgan Ågren jamming with Thordendal (Meshuggah guitarist) on his song Sol Niger Within on that learning channel (UR, Utbildningsradion) program about learning to play drums is insane. Not just is it technically complex but it also grooooves
Literally every reaction I've seen to Meshuggah's music has the reactor describing the music as "crazy". People who know any Yiddish and are familiar with this band get a chuckle every time it happens.
Tomas practiced the song "Bleed" for an entire year just to learn this new way of drumming and get the song into muscle memory. That's dedication right there.
Actually you're both right. They use polymeters almost everywhere, so most sections are both in 4/4 and also in some odd meter (usually multiple odd meters, since there are some shorter bars to sync back up with the 4/4 pulse).
He uses Vic Firth Tomas Haake Signature. Please react to "Bleed" for crazy double pedal action, "Electric Red" for heaviness. If you wanna see ton of technique and taste check out "Stengah" Live.
Tomas used to play Vic Firth and had his own signature stick through them. In 2013 he made a change, and is a Wincent Drumstick endorser, and uses the Wincent THS (Tomas Haake Signature) stick.
I have seen them live more than a few times and it is even more mindblowing watching a bunch of 50plus dudes kill it. That whole band is on another level. They helped create a whole different sound of metal. The singer used to play guitar and sing these crazy time signatures at the same time. These guys deserve so much more kudos than they get. Great video man. Have you seen Infant Annihilator Cuntcrusher play through? Disgusting sounding, yes. But keep an open mind. That young dudes drum skills are another completely different beast. I would like to say thank you for liking and understanding the whole sound of the song instead of just focusing the drums and discounting the strings or vocals. Metal and especially extreme metal get passed by a lot of people cause they can't understand the lyrics or the guitars sound like a typewriter but you took into account all the elements and the wall of sound and came out a fan.
Using double pedal is indeed really hard at first, it took me like a year and a half to get past the first speed barrier (which was around 135 bpm for me) now I can consistently do anything around 160-170? But it's still really hard to get past that, despite my 4 years of playing with doubles
If you liked Tomas you'd most likely dig Mario Duplantier. Plays in a band called Gojira, maybe check out his drum cam for the song Toxic Garbage Island
I gotta say, to see a gospel drummer react to this is epic. Gospel drummers are absolute beast technicians when it comes to musical approach. I hope you apply some of this to your playing and melt faces. Love your perspective btw. I'm sure someone already said this, but if you get the chance, catch them live, it will change your life more than it has now just reacting to it.
He's not only using a double bass pedal - he has two pedals for his left foot, the other one for the high hat. Most of the song is expressed through a single bass pedal.
Im definitely a double bass player, just picked up that china cymbal he uses the Sabian AAX xtreme 19 china. This is definitely one of my favorite bands, that bell Brass Snare is absolutely the best sounding thing I've ever heard. A thick brass snare is high on my list! keep on rocking man, I really appreciate you commenting on the singer, cause yeah hes a beast, and yeah the mix is sweet! FYI this band is so legendary they have an entire subgenre of metal that has formed in their wake called Djent which is an onomatopoeia for the sound the guitar and bass band a "djent". Other notable bands include Animals as Leaders and Periphery. But you definitely know Animals as Leaders drummer Matt Garstka cause he is hottest drummer in modern metal by far!

Guitar bass and drums sure gotta memorize some crazy complex patterns. They must practice like crazy in order to play this stuff live without missing a beat. Even when it’s staying in the same poly meter for a while, they’re still changing up the pattern constantly. Crazy

Check some out Meshuggahs live from Tokyo performance of the song Pravus. It is the best live performance I have ever seen and the energy that they bring forth is on a different level.
from what ive seen in many videos he has 3 hi-hats, one open and one closed and one he can open and close with his foot as usual. now i cant remeber every song of the top of my head but i belive that they are all made in a 4/4 but they poly the hell out of them with ghost notes and one over and under and sick fills etc. and what their music is depends on who´s listening, for a "metalhead" its just kickass music and for a musician their songs are basiclly masterclasses. Time signature 4/4 believe it or not. These guys are polymeter masters.
"Masters" is an understatement. They're polyrhythm gods.
