Chuck just keeps growing more intelligent with each episode! I wonder who he is hanging with? Chuck, even though you are not one of the expert "Scientists" you bring an amazing amount of insight and information to every episode. And you bring something globally loved by all humans, humor.
I like having a scientist, a regular guy and another scientist from a different specialty. Dr.Christakis could have given a scientific lecture that went over my head. Instead, I listened to every word each contributor said. I have always been a science believer due to their education and dedication. This was a great watch.
Relatable & informative people help our society. I loved how Dr. Nicholas Christakis was able to roll with the humor and then steer the talk right back on target with clear and precise facts. Great one.
Churchill's "End of the beginning" speech was in November, 1942, after Alexander aand Montgomery defeated Rommel at El Alamein, securing Egypt and the Suez Canal from the Axis. It was a big, important victory for Britain, and Churchill wanted to celebrate while managing the public's expectations, saying, "Now this is not the end. It is not even the beginning of the end. but it is, perhaps, the end of the beginning."
That makes more sense than after D-Day, which is probably the beginning of the end. Also, it was sad to read recently that Anne Frank was betrayed after D-Day, when it looked like Germany was going to be defeated.
This struck a broad range of emotions for me. It left me feeling informed & concerned. All I can say is I'll try to really enjoy the next decade if I can.
Great episode. I like that you are talking about important subjects that have a very relevant and immediate impact on choices we make today. Would love to hear more on subjects like global waste management issues and climate change and also which scientific r&d is making promising advances in those areas.
That was a great conversation about the most influential subject in our lifes in the last 3 years, we need more people making science more easy to common folks to understand.
The logic and compassion demonstrated here are commendable and much needed in the general public. Rational unemotional conversation must prevail. There are no bad guys here; it's just us accepting or not accepting reasonable information to overcome a virus that no one really wants but we afraid to not be the center of protecting ourselves, or families, and the general public and being dependent on others to guide us. That lack of trust is truly the core of many of our issues.
As much as I love 'Star Talk', I was hesitant to click. I'm burnt-out on Covid in the media. But this was great! It gives social and historical perspective, and was "uplifting". Thanks Neil and crew!
As a society we would have bern FAR better off if this kind of content was being presented by our media on a regular basis than the distrustworthy BS and fear mongering that was actually presented by the media.
I noticed that about Charlie Rose; he'd have interesting guests, but then try to prove his knowledge by interrupting. Haven't noticed that here, other than interruptions for jokes. Didn't quite get the point of the 1% versus 10% so will have to listen to it again.
I think Neil and Chuck interrupt to bring in the average listener when the speaker is getting too abstract or wonky for the non science literate person.
Absolutely fascinating! What Prof. Christakis had to say about the history of pandemics, its impact upon various history's various social, political, and spiritual algorithms over millennia, has really been an eye-opener. I love how all three of you provided some leavening humor interwoven with scientific facts to create quite a lively conversation. Let's just hope we all wake up as well as look up, asap! Jenny
One of the first things I did when COVID was first introduced as a potential pandemic was to read Daniel Defoe's "A Journal of the Plague Year, " which details the bubonic plague in London ex post facto; recommended in such a scenario. It presented details on individual, societal, and govering response and behaviors to such an event that mirrored current conduct and accurately set my expectations for 2020 and beyond. I was only caught unaware by how few people were resilient to learn from the past and therefore imprudently doomed to repeat it. This episode of StarTalk captures well some of the plethora of variables that combined to create this perfect storm in which we find ourselves, and is an easy favorite - most appreciated!
Dr. Tyson, I hope you are immortal!!! I know Chuck's not, but revive him and keep it going forever. You guys are the best. Very informative but so down to earth. Love it
Thanks a lot for everything, Neil, Chuck and the crew of StarTalk, it's always a pleasure to listen and learn from you!!! I myself and my wife took on a mission to teach our extended family to get the vaccines, to trust in science, to find the right info on line and of course, to be sceptical in a good sense, not to trust the first messiah that comes to town and to dig deeper if you are in doubt. A lot of this methods came from you guys and i'm grateful for that. The only problem is that I come from Slovenia (EU) and there is not much good content on-line in our language and people who do not understand English, miss so much knowledge and fall into an abyss of misinformation and is a tough job to change their minds... But we'll keep on trying, that's the least we can do... keep up with the great work, we need you!!!💪💪😁
What a fantastic episode! If more ppl were willing to learn and listen to the science, we'd be in a better place through this pandemic. No politicizing, just facts and theoretical views.
I want to believe in science, but the science has BEEN politicized. Doctors, immunologists, virologists, etc with data that conflicts with widely held opinions on Covid are not only scoffed at but labeled as dangerous. I mean perhaps they are, but it's literally part of the science. It is abhorrently unscientific to suppress data. The right wing of the government politicizes it in their way, the left wing politicizes it in their way. It sucks because we want to make informed decisions but when there is no transparency in government and our medical institutions trust is a real shaky issue.
@@crono3339 that's what's upsetting to me as a fan of this show...they only seem interested in the 'science' that is pushed by the left propaganda machine while people who question vaccine efficacy and are curious about effective treatments are lumped in with the bleach drinking 5g crowd. Having experts explain conspiracy theorists in an academic way is really useful in being protected from their misinformed views.

First time I came across this podcast. Thank you for sharing this. I appreciate hearing a substantial conversation and insight into the pandemic. These conversations are much needed.
This was probably the most convincing and informative discussion I've seen since this virus came about. Rather than relying on the network talking heads, more of these kinds of discussions need to be better known to the general public.
I have been influenced by Critical sociology BIG TIME. It has enabled me to be able to be as unbiased as possible, to consider different perspectives, and to gather as much information as possible. I found my introduction to Critical sociology profound in terms of finding my own way of being in the world. Before that, I struggled to come to terms with my upbringing, and was very confused by the realities I was exposed to eg. cultural, social, governmental, religious. Critical sociology helped me to open my mind without having to go all over the world to realize there are many ways of understanding reality.
Instead of making fun of people you don't agree with remember this; those you can't negotiate with will become either your slaves or your tyrants. That's why free speech is so important. It's the mechanism by which people of different opinions talk it out instead of strangling each other. Be kind to both sides of the argument. If we are all to be judged, someday, I suspect, it won't be based on our self righteous beliefs but how we treated others of differing views.
In Jan 2020 my partner and I said COVID would pass through the air and we should wear masks, but experts on the tv said NO ( I'm a nuclear biological warfare specialist retired she is an NHS nurse) we then said behavioural scientists need to be involved because of the madness of crowds, but the only brought them in during second lockdown and later for some. Experts for this COVID seem to not have the required basic knowledge quite frankly.
Yes, there were studies out of Asia in April 2020 that contact traced over 99% of the infections back to indoor transmission. But they should have known from SARS and MERS how this likely spread and what biohazard protection level was necessary for people likely to come into contact with infected people, what type for people who deal with the public, and what is necessary for people just temporarily going into a building. Industrial safety would have been better at stopping transmission.
I think it has come to a failure to listen to each other, putting ourselves aside for the greater good, and people that think they are more important than everyone else. Social media is magnifying the problem.
An impressive guest, his understanding of the complexity of the problems and a coherent delineation of some complexities reminds me quite of Joscha Bach (I'd love to see him there ^^)
@@Hecarim420 yes, agree to that, except conflating distrust of science with distrust of big pharma corporations. I hope there is a celebration of a return to normal, but I fear the isolation and weirdness combined with social media influences will have people less inclined to interact with one another post covid
35:55 - I definitely don't think the majority of people have been able to just save a bunch of money. Unless you were doing amazing financially before the pandemic, the pandemic most likely hurt peoples pockets. It would be crazy to assume the average person was doing fine before the pandemic.
You guys are great. Thumb in the eye of UA-cam who will instantly demonetize and bury any video that mentions the current ongoing pandemic as it moves to endemic.
The good thing about the virus and other diseases is that it's a reminder to us of how fragile we are and how much we need it to practice humility and tolerance. It's the evil that has the power to unite and awaken those who forget the underpinnings of human nature. I think reason leads to the appreciation of science and the understanding of scientists. Love you all equally.
Great interview and wonderful points. It baffles me how a sociologist would confuse distrust of science with distrust of big pharma and the politicians who manipulate population with a complicit media. History does show the reason for distrusting them, and scientists that align with big pharma's economic goals.

Packed white dwarf dense with information, revelations, insights, truths, and greater understanding of how multiple aspects of our both OBjective and SUBjective existence works.
Bravo, and a standing "o" from me.👍💯
But not a mention of the well-documented side effects of the covid-19 vaccines, only praises for their limited efficacy.
I think everyone needs a Chuck beside them, someone who brings joy and laughter. You three are amazing, thank you so much
Relatable & informative people help our society.
Thanks for sharing the context!
That makes more sense than after D-Day, which is probably the beginning of the end. Also, it was sad to read recently that Anne Frank was betrayed after D-Day, when it looked like Germany was going to be defeated.
All human beings should be required to view this episode.
This struck a broad range of emotions for me. It left me feeling informed & concerned. All I can say is I'll try to really enjoy the next decade if I can.
Great job, Neil and Chuck, on inviting Nicholas as the person who can explain what is happening. Loved it! Great talk!
Excellent talk! So interesting to learn about the complexities and how we humans are handling it. Stay safe everyone! 👍💕
Great episode. I like that you are talking about important subjects that have a very relevant and immediate impact on choices we make today. Would love to hear more on subjects like global waste management issues and climate change and also which scientific r&d is making promising advances in those areas.
Thank you for the feedback and suggestions! We have taken note.
This was a delightful and thoughtful conversation between 2 scientists and Chuck.
I am a 61 year old professor in another discipline. I have so much fun finding people who are answering my cosmic questions!
Great Nick Christakis, invite him again. Νίκο είσαι εξαιρετικός, απολαυστικότατο επεισόδιο.
That was a great conversation about the most influential subject in our lifes in the last 3 years, we need more people making science more easy to common folks to understand.
One of the best and most functional and practically relevant hours of StarTalk!
The guest was amazing! I want to see more of his work! 👏👏👏
Trusting deceptions and flawed theories is also at the core of many of our issues
@@monkeyrilla What is the actual truth according to your scientific research?

As much as I love 'Star Talk', I was hesitant to click. I'm burnt-out on Covid in the media.
But this was great! It gives social and historical perspective, and was "uplifting". Thanks Neil and crew!
As a society we would have bern FAR better off if this kind of content was being presented by our media on a regular basis than the distrustworthy BS and fear mongering that was actually presented by the media.
neil is a really captivating speaker but he really needs to learn how to not interrupt his guests because he does it every episode
I thought he was pretty good about that today.
Brilliant! Thank-you. Loved seeing through a window into the science of sociology. Well done Neil, Chuck, and especially Dr. Christakis.
Chucks impression at 9:25 was comedy gold and had me in tears almost. Thanks for the great talk!
I am just an ignorant simple human being, you all just restored my faith in humanity! Thank you.
What a breath of fresh air to hear reasoned and intelligent conversation on this topic.
2022 will be the 300th aniversary of its publication.
But we'll keep on trying, that's the least we can do... keep up with the great work, we need you!!!💪💪😁
As an RN working the affliction, thanks for the words to bring more people to truth.
What a fantastic episode! If more ppl were willing to learn and listen to the science, we'd be in a better place through this pandemic. No politicizing, just facts and theoretical views.
I believe in Anthony Fauci. He is the science. He is all knowing. I wear 3 masks when I go outside. :)
You can't not politicize it, when in reality, this virus was injected into society for political purposes!
Just wear your cloth mask you selfish dummy 🤠
@@crono3339 It helps to know how science works and what ‘peer review’ is. Scientific sounding conjecture has far less value than peer reviewed data. Because you may want something to be true it doesn’t mean that it could be.
Dr. Christakis is an erudite and enlightening human. Wonderful episode. Thank you all.
Economic equality and political polarization are two of our biggest fundamental problems.
We’re not going to make any headway until we first make progress on those two issues.
No hope for the second. They created their own alternative media.
This was such a great show.
Need to bring back Nicholas wow.🤯🤯
I learned a lot today
Awesome talk! Wished there was an expert in virology to engage in this conversation! I think the world problems are extremely complicated to the point that they have no simple answers. This talk is definitely a factor in to the course of action for the beneficial progression of humanity.
I love sitting in on your conversations. ♡ I learn so much, laugh so much, and enjoy my time. Thank you for sharing.
I already feel this episode is gonna be great
Dr Tyson et al, i’ve been working in public health a couple years now, not in the US, the past 2 years just made not want to do my job any longer…but now you put out this episode and i want to go back to work tomorrow!
Wow, the play between you three was amazing. Especially the humor on such a serious thing... The comedian needs his own show...on HBO.
I've never been anti vax but I started to waver a bit and doubt them. Listening to StarTalk has restored my confidence in them. I think I started to be influenced by certain individuals who have these views and have a general conspiracy theory type mentality. Having experts explain conspiracy theorists in an academic way is really useful in being protected from their misinformed views.
Thank you Dr. Christakis for contributing to one of the most important and interesting Star Talk episodes. It did help put the pandemic in perspective and hoping for a better 2024!
😂
Let's Go!
This man is a genius!!! Absolutely brilliant. It’s amazing what the top tier of humanity is capable of understanding. If only we had heeded history.
An amazing reminder of how uneducated our society is. Thank you gentlemen.
It is so nice to be basking in these guys brilliance, it truly is.
So great to hear the truth spoken without bias.
First time I came across this podcast. Thank you for sharing this. I appreciate hearing a substantial conversation and insight into the pandemic. These conversations are much needed.
This is so damn good. Cannot thank you enough for discussing this, in the way that you have.
This was probably the most convincing and informative discussion I've seen since this virus came about. Rather than relying on the network talking heads, more of these kinds of discussions need to be better known to the general public.
This is by far the best interview podcast ever.. great job..I love this guy..🤣🤣 .he made TOO much sense....
Apart from all of the covid sniffing by the guy in the glasses
Every time I think you cannot top yourselves YOU DO THANK YOU.
For those of us who believe in science and the way it's delivered here, this is a safe harbor.
Kind of disappointing that an apparently well versed sociologist wouldn't address that and continues saying it is science illiteracy or skepticism instead of distrusting the usual corporations who have repeatedly lied to people, along with politicians, media and some scientists too. Sounds like more propaganda.
@@josecartin825 I totally agree! Sounds to me as though they’re hired to push the vaccines and to intellectually convince those who do not research.. I would like to see a discussion on the vaccinated who die from Covid!!
I love looking and listening to Chuck😁 and learning from Neil and guest
Great information made available to the listening or viewing public in hopes of removing the ignorance infecting some corners of our society. I would like Neil to invite Dr. Lanka (of Germany) to discuss his views on virology and how COVID 19 fits into the scheme of historical viruses.
A big thank you from Europe. A brilliant sociologist.
The sound quality is remarkably good for a conference call. What soft and hardware is used for this video? Maybe done in post? I want this in the office! Teams app etc is pretty meh can you repeat that please?
Great episode. I read about cholera in Amsterdam in the 12th and 13th century and how dangerous variations of this disease were that took longer to kills their hosts. People would walk around longer without noticeable symptoms infecting more people around them.
Great video! Thank you for helping us understand better about this disturbing moment we're living. I feel like I'm in a science fiction film and not the reality. Saludos desde Brazil.
This was an AMAZING discussion! Could have listened to another 2-3hours.
I hope there is a celebration of a return to normal, but I fear the isolation and weirdness combined with social media influences will have people less inclined to interact with one another post covid
My fear is that the 2nd roaring 20s will end the same way as the first 😕
Don't end your intelligent discussions please.
Just want to say, if we go seeking things, we're going to find them let's learn from them...
35:55 - I definitely don't think the majority of people have been able to just save a bunch of money. Unless you were doing amazing financially before the pandemic, the pandemic most likely hurt peoples pockets. It would be crazy to assume the average person was doing fine before the pandemic.
Wow!! DR. Neil, Chuck, this episode is out really knocked out of the park. The best ever I've ever seen.
Thank you. 😊
nice.. sounds like a sociology department with actual Math in it!... thumbs up for Yale!
I got more than I bargained for. I came for the science, but I was also very entertained.
Awesome talk guys
Christakis, Neil deGrasse & Chuck - THANK YOU!
Great interview and wonderful points. It baffles me how a sociologist would confuse distrust of science with distrust of big pharma and the politicians who manipulate population with a complicit media. History does show the reason for distrusting them, and scientists that align with big pharma's economic goals.
Sorry, I didn't feel this was discussed. Could you tell me when it came up? Thanks kindly.
Wow, amazing and love the humor throughout the show! Indeed lots of serious learning with fun! Thanks!
I asked my doctor when the so called "pandemic" will end. He said, "I don't know, I'm not a politician."
Honestly, y'all are just brilliant. Great way to commute to work and back!
Love the show, you guys are great!!
Right back atcha, Daniel!
The. 5. G. Plague destroyed my girlfriends. G. Spot. And gave her. Herd. Immunity.
