    • @BeyondDaX
      @BeyondDaX 3 роки тому +20

      More or less yes. But then again, the tale of the bismark is a classic story template of why having a super dreadnought while its a good idea in paper is more or less a huge target without support equal to its size.

      @@BeyondDaX The Malevolence of the Clone Wars Era was the other Bismark of the Star Wars Universe.

    • @ThePalaeontologist
      @ThePalaeontologist 3 роки тому +7

      @@BeyondDaX Well it was more that it was impractical for the Kriegsmarine to vie with the Royal Navy in terms of their entire surface fleet. The Royal Navy had many more destroyers covering and defending the approaches to the span of coastline by the Thames Estuary alone, than the Germans had destroyers in total. It was not just a matter of battleships, in essentially all regards in the surface fleet, the British were well-ahead of the Germans. Bismarck was essentially a vanity project and PR stunt by the Third Reich, to try and threaten the Royal Navy in it's home waters and send a message to Britain but perhaps even more so France (France, having been the most eager to punish Germany in the Treaty of Versailles 1919) that Germany was 'back' in naval terms.
      However, Bismarck was never going to be anywhere near as impactful as a commerce raider as say, many of the U-boats were. It was an older mentality of big gun brawlers in a world shifting to air power and increasingly effective submarine technology. The general point you mention is broadly fair, though Bismarck is sometimes fabled as some leviathan compared to everything else. Let's not forget that HMS _Hood_ while being from 1918, with some mid-life modifications, was a very large example of a British _Battlecruiser_ however for it's type and kind, the 'Pride of the Royal Navy' (as it was 1918 to 1941, arguably) was to almost everyone else, a battleship by sheer scale and firepower. In it's bauplan, design, and form, she was of course a battlecruiser, yet one taking the lessons of Jutland 1916 and improving on older classes. She was the largest warship on the planet - bigger than literal dreadnought battleships around her - for two decades.
      Bismarck was designed with the latest British, French, American and Japanese dreadnought battleships in mind, to be bigger and nastier by specification. Though we must not forget, that HMS _Hood_ while herself technically not even a true battleship, was a) bigger than all battleships (until Bismarck), b) armed with 15 inch guns (as was Bismarck) and then still c) longer than Bismarck. Bismarck was much younger, newer and reflected the vanity of the Nazi regime as well as it's intention to go for the prestige victory. It was essentially them saying, 'anything you can do we can do better', forgetting that the Royal Navy was still the by far greatest navy on the planet in 1940. Without a shadow of a doubt, the German battleship was deadly, well-armed and smartly designed in most respects, with newer range finders and targetting gear than HMS _Hood_ from a previous generation.
      Nevertheless, it wasn't so much that the Germans had built a ship wildly superior to anything the British had. It was physically bigger and generally faster than a lot of the British standards (i.e. British standard Battleships, deliberately made by the British to be numerous enough for their Imperial duties though large enough to still be impressive under Treaty Limitations, right up to the limits of 36,000 tonnes in some cases) Bismarck should not have even existed at all according to the antiquated Treaty of Versailles, and it's harsher edicts, though in fairness, the British were not the ones leading the charge in that regard but the French who fully wished to exact revenge on Germany for what damage it had done to France (1.75 million French people died in WWI and there was inflicted colossal damage on the French countyside, amounting to many billions of pounds of property damage too; entire landscapes were wrecked)
      Massively reflective of the times, Bismarck stood as a symbolic of *defiance to the Western allies* and was not necessarily as practical _for German_ requirements, as opposed to generally what would be possible for the British, Americans or for that matter, that Japanese. France and Italy were more constrained with their allowance of tonnage from the London and Washington Naval Conferences and Treaties, 1922 through to 1930, yet even they were in a better starting position to build battleships. Bismarck wasn't massively larger than some of the biggest French and Italian battleships, e.g. Strasbourg and Dunkerqué, though granted, they were generally inferior to the overall fire accuracy and gunnery quality of the Germans. Some of the finest sailors and officers in the entire Kriegsmarine were lost on the Bismarck. He (the Germans deliberately regarded Bismarck as a male ship, not the traditional female most others were - for reasons of blatant bravado) was given priority of the best sailors in the German surface fleet. His gunnery was brisk, accurate and the ship was overall a worthy adversary to any allied ship in it's type (BB/Battleship)
      Nevertheless, always remember that the British Ministry of War (later, Defence) was keen on slaying a dragon for PR value so to speak, and although Bismarck genuinely presented a credible and ominous threat to allied merchant ships either alone or escorted (practically no destroyers or cruisers could go against Bismarck alone, though they could track and shadow him) in convoys, the fact of the matter was, that Churchill made Bismarck into a lightning rod for British propaganda (just as he later did with it's sister ship, Tirpitz, slightly bigger and better made than Bismarck, though even less useful in the end, mainly loitering around fortified AA gun infested Fjords dodging RAF bombers and RN midget submarines trying and eventually succeeding to damage/destroy her)
      The anxiety Churchill had over Tirpitz, was inordinate to it's real tactical or strategic value; constantly allotting far greater than necessary resources and manpower to having the ship marked in case it made a run to intefere with the British efforts in the Arctic Convoys aiding Soviet Russia with immense sacrifice; this, being part of the only thing that kept Churchill awake at night with worry - the idea of Britain and her allies being starved out of the war due to losing control of sea lanes. The U-boat menace in the Atlantic was the primary concern of Churchill, and the British led the allies to defeating that threat via technological innovation and new strategies. Millions of tonnes of shipping were lost, and 35,000 British Merchant Navy/Merchant Marine crewmen were lost. Thousands of Royal Navy personnel, perished too, in the struggle.
      Besides perhaps the ongoing fighting in Manchuria between the Chinese and Japanese (going on since before the Germans invaded Poland), the Battle for the Atlantic was the longest running campaign of WWII. The British won as the dominant power there just as the Americans won as the dominant power in the Pacific. The final 45 U-boats of any operational value were recklessly thrown at the massive allied Armada on D-Day; largely annihilated in the English Channel by effectively well-honed tactics and technology developed over the years to deal with them. Some losses were incurred but the U-boats were largely a bit of a joke by then, defeated. Earlier in the war, the British had obliterated the German destroyer fleet/most of them at the Second Battle of Narvik.
      Bismarck and Tirpitz were large battleships, but Germany could not make many of them and the British weren't incapable of building something bigger had it not been for the naval treaties which the Germans and Japanese simply violated and ignored. The British were faithful to the treaties, though HMS _Hood_ was older than the treaties, and too well-loved to simply scrap or downsize. She was the only ship in class of the _Admiral_-class Battlecruiser. I would regard her as Super Battlecruiser. A giant among the battlecruisers; but still a battlecruiser at heart.
      The point I was making earlier about HMS _Hood_ being 'as good as a battleship to most eyes' in the interwar years, is true; only a handful of nations on the planet could even order let alone build and properly use Battleships, and Britain cancelled 3 of the sister ships of HMS _Hood_ leaving her as a peculiar and unique ship indeed. Bismarck was the new Rottweiler or Doberman on the block; Hood was the venerable old champion Greyhound. A sleek ambassador of all things British Imperial, touring the Empire in the 1920's to promote Britain with HMS _Renown_ a sleek cruiser. Hood was incredibly beautiful. Of course, the narrative is that Bismarck was her nemesis, and yes, he ultimately was - but Denmark Straits was not a forgone conclusion. Bismarck got very lucky with her shot, and it was more Admiralty penny pinching skipping a refit of the aft deck armour, that doomed Hood. From 1418 men on HMS _Hood_ that day, 3 survived the blast. She sank in 4 minutes and took nearly her entire crew with her; including Vice-Admiral Holland.
      Bismarck killed her before she could complete her turn into Bismarck's firing arcs (Holland was doing everything right, reducing the profile of his own ship by turning into the fire not allowing his ship to be raked side on broadsides - and it was the doctrine taught to all navies at the time whom had battleships) They were just incredibly unlucky. Hood's rudder was later found turned to port, showing the claim Holland was making the correct turn, was absolutely true. A frozen moment in time, recorded forever. The majority of the crew would have been incinerated and blasted to pieces as the explosion as blast doors failed as the blast was stronger than they were ever meant to stop.

Took me about half an hour, not too shabby. Anyway, try linking to wikipedia at uni and see what happens lol the ability to interpret and discuss history isn't reliant on wikipedia articles. I remember the first time I saw the 'trailer' or whatever it was for KOTR, and being so ecstatic to play the game and learn more about it but being disappointed at the time because of the disparity between the trailer and the gameplay. I want to relive the excitement for the beauty and mystique of that era of Star Wars, and I definitely think films or shows would do it justice.

    I wish there was *good* concept art of the Star of Coruscant and the other ships talked about in the Battle of Hoth. We have a painting of the same type of ship the "Dauntless Star" belonged to thanks to the book "Annihilation" which shows the Battle of Duro on the back, and the Conraddas Vindicator's concept art is similar in paint scheme and shape to them as well (although it could just be a shot-down Valor-class or something). Unfortunately until then, they basically just remain formless gray husks on the Hoth map.
    I need to talk to Charles Boyd about somehow getting more concept artwork or something of these ships out to the public.

      The events of the canon clone wars and EU clone wars aren't mutually exclusive, canon stuff can be EU, EU stuff can't be canon tho unless specifically given that status.
      The Star of Coruscant's is basically what happens when you design a map, go "we got a big crashed ship on it" and then need to justify how you got it there. It's bad writing (or good writing for an incompetent ship crew). No warship that hasn't been sabotaged or shot to hell already, should ever hit a planet. You don't want to ever fight in a planetary gravity well, it's bad tactics, and you can't heard a ship into one (unless you have an insane numbers advantage), space is too big, you can go anyway you want.

    Huh. I was about to say how a "Super Dreadnought" in the Old Republic Era would make no sense since dreadnoughts of the era like the Harrower-class were around the size of an Imperial Star Destroyer, but after watching the video again I guess the Star of Coruscant was just a failed upbringing of "Modern" dreadnoughts. The spark that would make dreadnoughts commonplace in the universe could've been at this time but the fire was snuffed out before it began, and the fire wouldn't truly start until the Galactic Civil War era. The Star was just a sign of things to come.
    Also 100% Star Wars if you get to read this, great job! Especially with the unique background music, count me subscribed!

    • @cgi2002
      @cgi2002 3 роки тому +1

      Ifs deceptive, a dreadnought was about 600m long then, this was 5km.
      Should point out however this wasn't even close to been the largest building project ever done by the republic. It's not even 1% of the size of the largest. Any orbital ring makes this thing tiny by comparison, and the republic had built dozens of those.

      @@cgi2002 That's true, Orbital Shipyards like the one of Kuat are possibly the biggest projects you can ever do, literally. But Satellites and Starships are very different things when it comes to complexity. Whether it's Hyperspace or Sublight propulsion ships require different technologies to truly work.

    • @cgi2002
      @cgi2002 3 роки тому

      @@jommyheyman1180 I did the math, the orbital rings around Kuatt would make them pointless. The materials required to build it would basically require them mining all the resources in the system and then some.
      The maintenance would need hundreds of millions of technicians working 24/7, with more materials used than building all the ships kuatt ever built would need, a few thousand times over.
      Oh and it needs a drive system (no hyperdrive admittedly), the most precisely controlled one ever built. It has to station keep so precisely that even a millimetre of movement could cause disaster as the entire structure is under insane levels of pressure, the forces involved are truely earthshattering. That is why a solid ring around a gravity well that you don't control is a nightmare. A solid sphere would be better as the forces are distributed better. The best solution would be a lose collection of stations with flexible tethers connecting them to each other.
      Oh and docking a ship at the station, or a single crash, would have likely destroyed the entire station. The shock passing through it would have been devistating to a rigid structure. Rigid structures are bad ideas, they are really bad at absorbing impacts, this is why military vehicles (tanks especially) don't use single solid hulls, they use plates that can warp and move. The few tanks that were solid forged hulls (early russian models) were mostly terrible.

    Good vid! You have to think that on a galactic scale, even such massive projects don't raise too much interest. 'Control' of millions of star systems seems like a laughable idea.
    Posting OTHER topic due to newest upload.
    Eck (& most of us fans) eventually concluded that the relative rarity of Impstars in the early EU didn't make much sense. However, we later got a Star Destroyer count of 'only' 25k, with a star system count of several million. This would bring the rarity status back and correlates with the Empire always described as spread thin. Good to see the Disneyverse, EU, and fans all beginning to agree.
    You can definitely see Thrawn's/the navy's argument for hundreds more small ships & fighters vs a single Death Star.

Would love to see the giant battleships of Coruscant, Alsakan, and Corellia during the Alsakan conflicts. IMO Star Wars needs far more design, role, and size diversity. Think its just common sense it would be this way, the Empire can't be the only faction to build mile long+ ships over the millenia.
