I just purchased the Nikon 8-15mm f3.5-4.5 fisheye lens from AllensCamera.com . This lens is replacing my aged Nikon 16mm f2.8 which hasn't taken a super tack sharp image in ages, it was time for it to be retired.
Some people ask is this lens worth it's $1,249 price tag? I point to the price tag of the 16mm 2.8 which is still right under $1000 new. So my answer is, if you need to ask is it worth it than it may not be the right option for you. Now I don't mean that in a down-putting way, but this is a specialty lens.
In my opinion this is not your first, second or even third lens in your bag. For me it's probably forth or fifth lens I would pick up. This is a specialty lens, it's going to be used sparingly to get a specific shot, then it's going back in the bag. Fisheye lenses are not meant to be over done, when you find yourself overdoing it, it's time to put it away.

You gettin a trim :^)
Could be a good option for some underwater photography.
Jared Polin I'd probably do 360s only. the zoom provides some sort of backup to increase the final resolution...
for CGI reflection maps
With 8mm and a rotator you can capture a 360 x 180 photosphere in just 4 shots. Also can make some interesting wide angle shots if you apply some correction and crop to a normal aspect- typically a close subject with expansive background. I have a favorite fisheye shot of a statue with a museum and riverfront in the background but most people would never think it was taken with a fisheye.
Jared, fisheye is a real classic for the skateboard videos and such :) really cool stuff
I don't even own a Nikon...I think I'm just a Jared Polin fan. Keep the videos coming sir
Do you know wich Metabone adapter would give me control / Access to the iris?
I used to use a fisheye lens with my film camera.I would get the sun in the frame which was no big deal with 35mm film but couldn't the sun damage the digital sensor despite that special coating they applied to the lens?
Jared, it would be cool to see some more vlogs!!!
Hello +Jared Polin, what do you think between this lens and the 10mm 2.8?? Love you videos and reviews, it really helps me a lot ! Thx mate!!
Hi LR 9.12.1 added the lens. DXO PL has optical correction for D850 and the 8-15mm. One probably can also add a plug in like the Fisheye-Hemi Plug-In for LR/PS for more choices.
looking for a super wide angel lense for skate & snowboard.
still cant deside if i should go for 8mm by Samyang or this Nikon 8mm-15mm. I go with Sony a7sii. I Need that 8mm focal length.
Could you review the 10-20mm dx when you get a hold of it?
Can you review the 10 20mm of Nikon??
Please do the 10-20mm when it comes out.
How would this look on a crop sensor?
Fro, can we see a 100-400 IS USM L II review from the canon? I'd love to.
What are you doing with all the D7000 boxes?
What are the 3 Amigos, im lense shopping for my nikon d5600.
Use it for Postman fro?
\
good things to know. thanks Jared!
Perhaps It would be good to use those circle pictures and create a larger mosaic image? That's the only suggestion I have for it right now.
I use a samyang 8mm 3.5 on a full frame body (hood off on ff mode) at nightclubs sometimes to catch some panoramic photos, then defish it just a little in LR using nikon 16mm profile, it helps because you can easily get the whole place in one shot, make it look bigger and clients like it for some odd reason. I think samyang 12mm is a way better deal if you dont mind the absence of af, but its easy to manual focus a fisheye lens even at 2.8, depth of field is huge.
why is cropped circle at 8mm video ?
You can use a circular fisheye to make content that you would project on a planetarium dome. I've tried something like this in the past and results were reasonable.
That goes so wide I got dizzy just looking at the shots! Well OK the last mohito was a bit too strong but hey great presentation and the fro looks great with that lens.
i would probably use it for close motion shots or video motion shots.not an every day lens but it does have its place
Can you review 10-20mm Nikon ?
Well, I would use 8mm on APS-C camera for 360° panorama ... and on FF camera 12mm, so I can use the most of resolution ...
I'm not a Nikon user but still a very interesting lens. The circle view can be very useful to create spherical panoramas for 360° viewers/VR or to create spherical textures for 3D rendering (HDR environment lightning, reflection maps etc). Things like that. The use as an artistic lens in stills photography is very limited and already overdone IMHO.
True. A shot every 60 degrees will yield a full 360° pano. In theory even 4 would suffice, but six has more room to wiggle :)
The edge between image circle and black "frame" looks quite weird... smeary @8mm!?
I use this lens to shoot 360x180 full spherical panoramas. 4 shots around stitched together gives you a total VR view of the scene when viewed in a proper viewer.
when are you going to launch the app on Android?
At the end of the video he said end of June.
JP, the beauty of the wide-end of this lens will be clear when you put it on a drone and take it up 500 feet.
Thank you!!
Circle look could be a fun video effect I guess.
I think one of the only times I would use a lens like this is when I'm doing a video and I want to show what somebody see when looking through a peephole. Other than that I can't think of many times I'd use a lens like this.
Where is the wind tunnel test??? :(
*AS YOU KNOW*
Rock on Jared!!!!
I have a samyang 8mm lens for APSc.
I like it a lot, I take with me almost everywhere.
I already have 6 lenses, but have only one quality 30mm f/1.4 ART. I can't see needing something like this just yet. I have bigger lenses on my wish list, like a 70-200mm f/2.8.
talk about how to take a photo a moon in the night with D5500 nikon please! how to lens is appropriate :)
A long lens
yes, ok but config for ISO, Shutter, and other config the moon is very bright!
Lowest ISO, a f-stop that your lens performs good at and then balance the shutter. Like you say, the moon is so bright so there is not much problem with settings.
You should do a interview with "postman fro".
You would use the circle effect in old 90s rap music videos...
I think it would be great as an underwater lens. maybe the only place where using a fisheye often is acceptable!
Trinity plus 1, Musketeers, Nikon 12 - 24, 24 - 70, 70 - 200 and 200 - 500mm!
You can use it in 8mm just for 360 photos i think.
right Meow...yep. I caught that #SuperTroopers
I believe they just added this lens profile to Lightroom.
can't wait for the android version
Hi, Jared will you review the new Loupdek for Lightroom?
For me the list 14-24mm 24-70mm 70-200mm and 150-600mm
You could use it for cool buttons
I need to get a fish eye for my cannon
Waddup Jared
Great for fun.
I just to do over 1000 360 virtual tours a year, for long time I use samyang 8 mm on ff, I don't think you get so better quality despite the price, but this nikon is quite handy, with the same lens (I own a D610 24Mpix) you can get a 50Mpix panorama or 200Mpix with only 5 photos or 4 if you know how. I try with nikon d850 and the result with 8 mm you get 93 Mpix
here are all FX nikon cameras tha same spot in 360 roundme.com/tour/215625/view/596363
Basically the fish eye was invented for the 360 photography long long time ago...
in the priority list is the lens that make money for you
No wind tunnel test? How are we going to make an informed decision without all the info? lol
I thought Fish eyes were a one in a thousand shot lens
THe [_O_] view... why use it? That is EXACTLY the view needed to project on a planetarium dome. Best if 4K vid as more pixels are lost to the unseen part.
Ca1 1mero thats what iwas thinking
These DNG are not RAW files, they have been edited!!! I can read in Bridge, the adjustments that you made to the images in Lightroom. WTF!
That's the point of DNG files, they embed the edits you make with the RAW data. You can always reset your settings if you want to see the original image without his changes.
Not interested by this lens at the begining.
Still not interested at the end.
I keep my Samyang 14mm f/2.8.
meh, just get fixed fish eye, i bought the rokinon 8mm 3.5. it has 180 angle of view. cheap, what you need. done and done.
...i really hate the circle look.
I personally need AF.
hoze187 i taped my focus with some gaffer tape to around 1,5m. This ist the distance most of the stuff I am shooting is away from me. I can't see the difference in focussing between near and far through the viewfinder or screen of my camera. only at home I see the difference. and most of the time I shoot in dark crowded places aka night clubs so I can't see the scale on top of the lense to check my focus
i dont think like you... i take a lot of photos with my fisheye XD!
Did he say $1200 for a fish eye? Nope this isn't #5 on my list, at $1200 it'd be closer to 8 or 9
You repeatedly claim to have *purchased* and *bought* the lens, and yet all the photos in this video were taken either inside the camera shop or in their parking lot. I am having trouble believing that actually you own this lens.
The image at 8mm has a very ugly circle vignetting, the transition from black to the image is ugly and not a sharp distinct one.
It looks like a Rokinon lens with a mediocre build quality.
