- Nikon 8-15mm Fisheye "Real World Review": is it Worth the Price for this Camera Lens?
This is a Real World Review of the Nikon 8-15mm F3.5-4.5E ED fisheye lens. Finally Nikon has replaced it's aging 16mm f2.8 lens that at one time was awesome but now, not so much.

I honestly think this lens should only shoot at two focal lengths, 8 and 15 and nothing in between. Shooting at 8mm gives you a completely round image and at 15 you get the traditional fisheye effect. For this Real World Review I took the lens out to the Philadelphia Museum of Art as well as to the skate park to put it through its paces.

Jared, one reason we use fisheye for skateboarding are the factors needed to get a skate photo. You ideally want to get the area the skateboarder came from, the area the trick is done at ( ledge, rail, in the air, etc ) and the landing area. Fisheye usually captures all the above. Plus..it looks cool and the beastie boys would approve! R.I.P. MCA!
I cant believe he got bored with a fisheye lens at a skating Park.....smh!
Is this the most cringe video ever? Yes. Is he a skateboard photographer? No, and god help us if he ever decides to dabbled furthermore. He’s just a UA-cam unboxer kook, but this is a good video about the lens despite him breaking every fisheye rule in skateboard photography. I’m definitely upgrading my Tokina 10-17 to this lens 🤣
@@petevphotography I use my Nikon 14-24 and it gets the job done very well.
That "crack" is called an expansion joint and it helps control cracking of concrete do to thermal expansion and contraction.
Quality of this video is fantastic
Jake Szetela thanks! We try!
Stephen Eckert what are you using to shoot video (Non GOPro stuff)? Glass etc? Looks very very crisp and clear. Excellent color.
Ben Derover thanks ben I just used a Canon XC10 for all the footage minus a gopro hero5 for jared's POV. It's a great run & gun camera for how we operate (I shoot flat and do a lot of post work though)
Stephen Eckert awesome! Thank you. Very clean video for sure. Good work to say the least.
Ben Derover im also now just realizing you're name is probably not actually Ben... 😐
Awesome review as per usual and super high-quality video as well.
This is the best and most useful lens test/review video I've ever seen!
Thanks for the vid.
great review.love the way you explain things in terms everyone can understand and not get over technical
great video jared, saw this lens and wondered about it. i love my 14-24mm and will stick with that thanks again and great to see you out shooting. peace to all.
OK that workout montage was freaking great! 😂
Love your Chanel ! Keep on making great videos
This video reminds me a little of when I bought one of those add-on fisheye adapters, and used it on my kit lens about nine years ago. I definitely had some moments of inspiration, but I also went a bit fisheye crazy. It was far too easy to do!
Thank you Jared much love n respect blessings to you
R. Venters hecks yea dude, i saw the thumbnail and i was like "is that freaking RJ?!" Props dude
Did anyone else think Jared's hair looked majestic in this video or was that just me? 😂
I shoot lots of skateboarding and wanted a 8mm. Just ordered one cant wait to use it
Last 3 seconds as good as any Marvel post-credits scene
Rudy Gauer hahahahaha
Really helpful! I live in Scotland this will be grand for castles and other stuff. Cool video!
Haha "I think the building isn't straight" omg you got me there :D
Thank you,very informative.
3:27 "this is horizonical" and that is hysterical
Ey up Jared. Its nearly two years later now, do you still own this lens and how often do you use it? Have you found any more uses for it? Cheers
I agree - most useful in interiors - in particular, a space capsule :) Good review.
So it was you that me and my dad saw walking down south st with that shirt my dad and I are fans of your work
I LOVE FISHEYE. My first prime lens is 15mm Fisheye, as it was the most afforable (sort of) UWA option. The barrel effects can be properly fix in PS to avoiding the blur causing by LR's lens correction (It's not a simple task so it's best to create PS's action but it's not going to give a consistant result for each different shots). Using the lens just for the fisheye effects can be a bit diffcult, but there's a simple rule "keeping the main subject in the center area and try to be creative on the edge of the frame ", the very same rule for UWA portraits. I'ven't try going lower than 15mm fishyeye yet, but I imagine it's would be more difficult as the more thing will get inthe frame with stronger barrel effects.
Hey Jared, I hope you read this comment! I love your videos first off, it would be really interesting if you took some time to research how skateboarding photography/videography is so different! In a sense of how much goes into actually doing it and different setups the professionals use! Would be really interesting. Have a good day my man
Can you please do the Nikon 10-20 lens. Thanks
Awesome!.... Thank You!!
Fish eye portraits are dope
Thank you for this nice sporting 💪🏻 review. This is a nice lens but a little too much expensive for the usefulness, as you said, one or two photos then you change the lens. Anyway i'm from France 🇫🇷 and with your videos i love to improve my english,. Good job ! 👌🏻
I'm just here for the drone b-roll (spark?)
Chris Wheatley it's actually the mavic, shot at 96fps (which I regretted later since the quality is superrr compressed at high framerates)
yes, I also am not too happy with my 96fps. It's still my favorite drone, though.
Stephen Eckert Awesome shot @12:37 with the speed ramping edit. So that was mavic footage played at 96p the whole time until the 24p slow motion part? If so I'm impressed that the 96p's motion (at 96) looks as good as it does before the ramp down, normally when I see 60p played at 60p it looks unnatural but this didn't have that at all.
Ahhh I thought Mavic first but some of the shots I noticed looked a bit iffy on quality. Still love having the drone footage sprinkled throughout the video, definitely hits the mark. More of that, please :D
Fly Guy it's baked in at 96fps so plays back natively at 24p in slow motion when brought into the timelime. I just sped it up 400% to play back at what a normal 24p would've normally looked like and then ramped down to 100% slow motion for certain parts
Thabk you Jared, I'm about to buy the old 16 2.8.
How you get that circle? When put on 8mm? I dont want to have circle.
Great Review, I use then usually for Visual effects like 360degree picture HDRI (bracketing) I realise the "Sigma 8mm F3.5 EX DG Circular Fisheye" is way cheaper and I don't such strong fringe on the edges. But I guess at 15mm would be interesting for the fact we need take much more angles and with 8mm 2 to 3 angle.
:) Thanks for the review!
do you still see the barrel when using a diagonal fisher lens instead of a circular?
So helpful thank you. I want to get a good lens specifically for skateboarding photos, I only like the look of the lens at 15mm. Do you think I should maybe just get a normal wide angle lens then rather than a 15mm? I dont want to get landed on or hit in the face either so if there could be a bit more distance between me and the subject that would be best. Awesome review!
Jared, I just purchased a copy of this lens. The build and image quality is fantastic. I am looking forward to some creative photography with this lens. Is this lens worth the price, you ask, definitely!
you should do a correction on the 12mm. That could be the sweet spot for corrections. I also would suggest fisheye hemi plugin for photoshop. It works great.
I wonder how this would work on APSC camera
@jaredpolin how do you feel about me saying they should've just built an updated 12mm f/2.8-f/4??
How would you compare this to the canon 8-15?
Which lens did you use for video recording?
What is that shoulder strap you are using - looks pretty awesome
do you think the nikon 8-15mm is any wider than the canon 8-15mm as far as distortion goes? not focal length, I shoot my canon around 10/11mm to crop square out of it to recreate a hasselblad 30mm style 6x6 image. I want more distortion, im considering buying the 10.5mm fisheye and trying that becasue I know the distortion on that one is crazy.
RAWlly great skate shots though man. Seriously.
will the outer shape circle of the lense always appear in your shot on a fisheye
God , after so many years, this vid still solid as gold.
What mount do you use to mount that gopro on top of camera?
Thanks
Jared, can you suggest between nikon 16mm f2.8d and sigma 15mm ex dg for D850? Or anyone can give me suggestion?
What's with the blue "vignetting" inside the image circle at 8 mm?
With the apsc (old Version)tamron10-24 you never get a circle, but its rectalinear and fully covers a fullframe from 15mm too. Using a focalreducer on an a7, the circle would probably be complete.
Very nice vid :)
I bought a 300$ fisheye for my nikon d40x which is pretty outdated. It didn’t support this model and I had to return it. Which ones can I get for my camera?
Rectal linear? LOL - love Fro Knows Photo!
The music that kicks in at 2:40 is awesome! -Link to source?
I thought there was a Lightroom option to remove chromatic aberrations. Under lens correction
I have just one question -- should a fisheye be used sparingly?
360 photography is where the 8mm would be nice
A lot of the skate photogs that shoot fisheye get creative with the lighting i.e. Strobes and exposure length.
i would have gotten a 8mm some time ago but i needed to replace my broken 18-55, so i got a 18-105 with vr and its almost payed for itself already. Id love a wide angle because i shoot allot of sport's and i also skateboard so a 8mm is amazing for this. i often like to get right in front of the skater then move out of the way you can get amazing shots like this.
Jared, I would like to buy a fisheye lens, but would this lens work on the Nikon D5300? Any suggestion would be very helpful?
David Todd it would work, but it’d be cropped by 30%
Any lens made by nikon that's F-mount would work ... Any lens ...
Please do a Canon 800d (T7i) real world review.
Très intéressant.. Merci!
Hey, what camera strap is that? I think the Tink Tank logo was on your camera bag, isn't it? :)
+Krisztián Forgács it's a black rapid my own I shoot raw version.
I think that once Adobe puts a profile in Lightroom, this lens will be pretty sweet corrected!
"Clicky McClickersons" 🤣
RJ is a hero.
been waiting for him to shoot it in DX format... guess he didn't want to cover that.
Wouldn’t the sun damage the camera ‘s sensor?
Personally, I don't like the circle effect but I think at 15mm looks pretty good. As you said Jared, this glass shouldn't be the 1st or 2nd lens someone own. Probably it gonna be my 7th buy.
I bet the shots of the fountain would look really nice near golden hour esp if they light it up
Also for the skateboarder jumping over the garbage can, it'd be cool to isolate him with the sky in the background and not the tree. But great tutorial
What about use it on a Nikon d500 ? I think that a ~12-22 is pretty good. Anyone knows any alternative ?
I have the new Tamron 10-24 g2. Really dig it. Also use it on a D500. Not a fish eye though. Provides very sharp images at higher apertures!
I know the guy skating in the vid. Knew him from way back in the day. So weird, what a small world.
I'm just a photography noob, but shouldn't you use a tripod to ensure your horizon is straight?
🔥
What kind of lav mic are you using?
We use sennheiser G3's
Dude!! That's my friend R.J. Venters skating! Wtf.. small ass world!
I came here to see Jared shoot some skate
Ha! I would totally ask to take my picture with you, Jared, if I saw you on the street. You're famous!
What Anthony Fantano is to music Jared is to photography
I own the Canon version of this lens. It's as sharp as the day is long just like the Nikon. Another use for this lens, and one thing I regularly use it for, is to create 360 panoramas for Google's indoor Street View for businesses. That's where it shines in my experience.
Also, Jared, an excellent piece of software, and the industry standard as far as Google Street View is concerned, is called PTGui. It's excellent, and very affordable, software for stitching. It works far better, and more accurately, than Photoshop in this use case.
Also also, heh, you need the in-between, 9-14mm for the above usage. Specifically around 11-12mm. :)
Zero interest in fisheye, but interesting to see how you tried to find its best uses.
Jared with the guy jumping over the waste basket, just shoot a bunch of frames and stitch them together in post to show him approaching, going up, and then over...all in the same frame. Then submit the result to Thrasher...
Hey Jared , you really do love that D5 don't you???
+Christos Phillippou it's my camera so yes.
So do I bro ....so do I 👊
most rugged camera on earth, and BEYOND!
When are we going to see 8-15 for Z or RF???😢
The most awesome part of the video was "HORIZONTICAL"
my fisheye lens is f2 to45 x not 8 to 15 for my j3 nikon
Was the dynamic range on the 6D Mark ii so bad there's no more RWR? Lol
Avery Quinn we're editing it now. Coming very soon
Sounds good :))
Hello Jared! Great review.
What do you think, will this be more risky to use in festivals and parties due the large field of view? You know, lasers damage camera sensors if they hit the lens, don't they? And while this lens shows pretty much 180° fov, will a laser beam hitting the glass element from the edges of the frame damage the sensor same as a direct beam with a "more normal" lens?
Fish eyes portraits look G af
love it, but something seems off about the arial footage
Jose Flores shooting high framerate (96fps)with the dji mavic results in pretty poor resolution unfortunately. We found out the hard way
oh ok thank you, just wondering over still looks good.
Canon commercial before the video hits irony right in the balls
Well if u want every thing in frame why not get a wide angle lens like a 24mm
There is creativity in the 8mm. You just need to have more imagination. I own an 8mm Sigma lens and I mostly use it in 360 degrees panoramas.
Thank you...Best comment....how can he get bored with a fisheye lens??...how can he say its not really a creative lens??....He needs to spend more time with that lens...
highlights get blown out or overexposed, out of focus is not that. bokehalicious is what your after. dont confuse people. i cant spell, peace jared, wish you would switch your terms on that. LONG time watcher and lover.
So excited for the 6d mark ii review!!
jared your images are so struggggg
Jared Polin looks good enough to eat !
Did I hear Rectal-Linear?!?!
Rectal-linear huh?
Is it worth the "purchase" price? The answer is NO. Why buy something that is so specialized when you may be able to rent it for just the shoot you need it for. Spend the money you save on having huge prints made of the one or two shots you get from the lens that you love.
Do you realize that your hair is now part of USA's cultural heritage ?
;o)
Did I really hear horizontical? :P
NZ MLN s you must be new here...
+colblimp it's okay everyone hears it for the first time.
colblimp Not really. Been subbed for a while but haven't been watching photography channels for a while. I don't remember hearing it in the older videos though, or maybe I just completely forgot :P
NZ MLN that's correct he never used to say horizontical in his old videos.
Yep, it's in the latest edition of the Fro dictionary, not in any other dictionary in the world though. It is what is ... just saying.
