    As you seen, no helmets were worn in those days. If you were hit in the head, it normally caused some type of injury. Sometimes the injured player may need to retire for the rest of that match or may return down the batting order if batting or when fielding. Rick McCosker batting for Australia was hit in the face that broke his jaw. He returned later to bat with his jaw bandaged. There are videos of this on UA-cam.

    Sir Viv was certainly one of the very greatest batsmen of all time. He was the founder of modern batsmanship. All the stars of today owe it to him for the way they are playing.

    Personally for me Don Bradman (The Don) was the best batsman of all time. He averaged 99.94 runs per innings. Also if you are interested in this sort of bowling I strongly suggest that you look up videos about the bodyline series.

    Viv Richards is in the conversation for second best cricketer ever.
    The greatest cricketer ever is Don Bradman by a mile. His record is twice as good as all players, from all eras, it's hard to see him ever being surpassed, but records are made to be broken.
    99.96.

    • @rigojin2615
      @rigojin2615 Рік тому

    The commentary is exaggerated - the W Indies were loved in Australia. The rivalry drew big crowds in Australia. A number of West Indian players from this era retired in Australia. They were always very popular.

    That was the best side I have seen and he was the probably the best batsman I have seen, I say probably as I think we would be talking about Barry Richards here is So]]uth Africa had not been banned from international Cricket. I saw them both live and was luckt to be there at Old Trafford when Viv hit his one day 187 not out, it was up there with the Botham Ashes performances in 81. Tahts another one for you the Botham Ashes, England V Australia in 81, it was just amazing all the way through and Botham stole the show. When England and Austrailin play a test series it is for a small Urn that contains ashes of the death of English Cricket, which is another story.

    Viv Richards was a great batsman, one of the best, but not the best by a long margin, I'd suggest not even the greatest West Indian batsman. Maybe the best West Indian batsman of his era, but I think Brian Lara was a better batsman. And you can't go past the great Sir Don Bradman, just looking at stats alone shows he was by far the best batsman to have ever lived. Some say that Bradman was so far ahead that he has dominated his sport far more than any other sportsman of any sport has dominated their own.
    There are so many historical inaccuracies in this video also, Viv Richards played international cricket from 1975 to 1991 yet the commentator says they landed on Australian shores for the following World Cup after 1975, this was 1979 and was again held in England. In fact, Australia neve hosted a World Cup until 1992 after Richards had retired. There was also video footage that was inaccurate as well, the one with Dennis Lillee pointing at his head after a bouncer (7:07) was not directed at Viv Richards, it was when Tony Grieg of England came out to bat with the first ever helmet in a World Series match, it was a motorcycle helmet. In fact if you look carefully, Viv Richards is in the background.
    Back in the day, what happened on the field of play stayed on the field. Off the ground players would socialise and be fairly friendly. Short pitched bowling was and still is a valid form of bowling used as a strategy of getting them to make a mistake, intimidation is a by-product and also a valid tactic that *all* teams use. This person makes out that Australia uses this tactic as being a bully, not true, if you're good enough, as Viv showed, it can be an advantage to the batsman. The whole idea is to find the weakness and force the batsman into an error.

    That era batting was very difficult as pitches were kept uncovered. Bat width narrow and weight heavy compare today era Modern bat . No good protective gear like today helmet and arms and other safety gaurd . Bigger boundary and no restriction on how many bouncer fast bowlers boweled in over to batsman. That era 50 equal to taodays 100 run.

    A request from a cricket fan. Do one on Phil Hughes from Australia who died whilst batting in a state game. He also played for Australia. FYI - Viv isn't the best batsman of all time but he was of his era. Don Bradman from Australia has statistics that basically double every other player.

    So when anyone calls a cricket batsman the greatest of all time, there is always an implicit asterisk. That is because there is no debate, by anyone, anywhere, anytime. They mean the greatest batsman of all time apart from The Don- Donald Bradman. If you compared Viv Richards stats to Don Bradman's and you knew nothing else you could be led to believe Richards did not know which end of the bat to hold. You take Bradman out of the equation and there is going to be something of a debate. So anyone who has a batting average across their career of more than 50 is considered a great. Viv's was just on 50, so not actually significantly outstanding. It was his swagger, his appearance, and dominance that gave him such standing. Still a remarkable player. Anyone whose life time batting average is over 60 is in a class of their own, there have only been three of four. Don Bradman's average was 99.94. He probably would have scored an unbeatable amount of runs too but a little thing called World War 2 took a huge chunk out of his career.
