My guess is that they considered what these bowlers achieved in the amount of time they played maybe. For example, Muralidaran took 300 wickets in 58 tests the 3rd fastest. Haddle 4th with 61 tests. Steyn and Warne 63 tests Mcgrath 64 tests. Anderson 81 tests the 29th fastest. Yes he is 40 but that would come down to modern techniques of looking after the body than compared to what was known years ago. But as I said that just my guess. There is no denying that Anderson is a fantastic bowler but after watching cricket for just over 3 decades I myself would not have him as a top 10.

Dale Steyn is such a nice bloke too. He and Mitchell Johnson had this dual personality thing where they were both ultra likeable, quietly spoken, thoughtful, kind, and sometimes even funny off the field but give them a cricket ball and both were stone cold killers. Both were virtually unplayable at their peaks, especially on a lively pitch. Steyn especially had the potential to be the greatest ever but express pace bowling takes a heavy toll on the body eventually and Steyn was no different.

I am biased, I think Warne was the best bowler of all time, but in addition he and Glenn McGrath played in the same team so took wickets from each other. The pressure they could put on batsmen when bowling in tandem was incredible, so I guess they were able to generate more chances. Warne got over 700 wickets and McGrath over 500 but why I rate Warne higher than Murali is what he brought to the game, he got the people into the ground, he popularised Test Cricket again, you were on the edge of your seat every delivery. I'm sure I'll get some heat from people disagreeing with me but that is my opinion. Murali, no doubt, was a great bowler, he took advantage of a birth defect where he couldn't straighten his arm and I believe he could generate extra spin through that action. He was controversial and rules had to be changed to allow him to bowl a legal delivery. But, being able to turn a ball a lot doesn't mean anything unless you have accuracy and he was deadly accurate, as are all the bowlers on this list and I guess that's what makes the big difference. You have faster bowlers, bowlers with more swing and more spin but only the greats had more accuracy and more consistency. Jimmy Anderson probably should be in there but maybe the list only included past players, he will certainly be on there after he eventually retires.

@Robert Duhaime Just to shed some light on bowlers: they don't "throw" the ball when the ball is bowled. This is why bowlers in cricket have a "run up" so they can generate momentum and utilise that speed when they land and let go of the ball at the crease. It's all to do with the biomechanics of the bowling action. That's what makes it unique and so incredible. They bowl with speeds of upward of 150kms/hr...that would be 90+ miles p/h. Whereas because baseball pitchers throw the ball, it's a lot easier to generate that speed. That's the difference but they don't throw it like you mentioned haha

There are so many greats in the past years of cricket, the current generation have a very tough job living up to them but there are players who will be remembered as all time greats in the current generation including Australia's Pat Cummins in both his bowling and his captaincy. He is a remarkable consistent wicket taker with a knack of getting the key wicket at the right time but he is also an incredibly wise captain as well who leads from the front. There is Jasprit Bumrah who is actually starting to surpass Cummins as a bowler with an incredible average, His figures will put him amongst the all time greats. Kagiso Rabada from South Africa can not be denied as being on a level with those 2 though maybe lacking a little bit of consistency in comparison but has incredible skill and pace. As far as batting is concerned in the recent past AB devilliers will be amongst SA greatest ever cricketers in all formats but Currently Steve Smith and Virat Kohli are the 2 biggest names in batting with the most enviable record though now at the twilight of their careers.

@@garethmorgan9374 I was about to say South Africa too. Allan Donald, Dale Steyn, Shaun Pollock. I guess, because of the apartheid ban from 1970 to 1991 a lot of players missed out. I would loved to have seen more of Mike Proctor and Peter Pollock, although Pollock was more to the end of his career in 1970. But prior to the 70s and World series Cricket and one day cricket there was a lot less cricket played and South Africa missed all that.

There are definitely greats at the moment, but for most of them, they still have a long way to go before they pass most on this list. But here is a list of currently playing bowlers that could definitely end up on or close to a top 10 list.
Jimmy Anderson (England) - (Arguably should be on this list, he is as good an exponent of swing as anyone and still going at 40)
Jofra Archer (England) - (Incredible talent, but hasn't played a lot of cricket in nearly two years due to injury. But he is still young, and has the pace and skill to be one of England's greatest if he can get back on the field and start playing again)
Pat Cummins (Australia) - (Current Australian captain, and arguably the best fast bowler at the moment, his skills are outstanding, but he still has many years to go in his career, but probably when he finishes he will be very close to top 10)
Jasprit Bumrah (India) - (Outstandingly talented, but injuries have probably stopped him from achieving his best in recent years, but he still has a long way to go before he passes many of the names on that list)
Shaheen Shah Afridi (Pakistan) - (Still very young, but he is an incredible talent, he is very good pace, and swing bowler)
Trent Boult (New Zealand) - (Probably the best new ball bowler in the modern era, excellent swing bowler with the pace to back it up)
Kagiso Rabada (South Africa) - (Definitely the best bowler in South Africa at the moment, fast, accurate)
Josh Hazlewood (Australia) - (Absolutely deadly in all conditions, his control of length is as good as anyone, a little like Glenn McGrath, but faster)
Mohammad Shami (India) - (Incredible swing bowler, and on his day easily a top 10 of current bowlers)
Ravi Ashwin (India) - (Probably the best spin bowler of the modern era, his record speaks for itself, although I don't think he is quite on the same level as a Warne or Murali)
Rashid Khan (Afghanistan) - (Probably the best ODI and T20 bowler in world cricket at the moment, unfortunately being from Afghanistan has meant he has had very limited opportunities at Test cricket, truly an exceptional bowler and still very young. It is very possible that by the time he retires, he will make that list)
I would also note that the list presented includes bowlers only from the late 1970s onward and there are several names that older fans of the sport will point to as deserving a place in the top 10. Kind of hard to do a top 10 without video footage though. For the historians of the game, names like Dennis Lillie (Australia), Jim Laker (England), Bill O'Reilly (Australia), Harold Larwood (England), Frank Tyson (England), Fred Trueman (Australia), Wes Hall (West Indies), Alan Davidson (Australia), Kapil Dev (India) these are all worth reading about.
I would also argue that Dennis Lillie should probably be on that list though, he was universally renowned as the best fast bowler of the 1970s, and by a significant margin. The combination of Denis Lillie and Jeff Thompson terrified batters of that era. Of note as well, while he is certainly not regarded as being on the level of some bowlers on this list, Jeff Thompson was probably the fastest bowler to ever play the game. Unfortunately, the technology to track speed accurately just didn't exist at the time.
Anyway, enjoy the content guys, keep it up.

An official ICC all time ranking list does exist. On it in the top 10 are only 4 of the bowlers on this list, which ,like the batting one is very modern centric (TV exposure). These are Murali,Khan,McGrath and Curt the Hurt Ambrose.
Number one on the ICC list is Sidney Barnes, who played each side of 1900. He took 189 wickets at 16.43 in only 27 Tests. He is the fastest to 150 wickets and holds the record for most wickets in a series (49) ,where he only played in 4 of the 5 matches. He took 719 first class wicket at 17 but hardly played for the first class sides as they didn't pay as well as the League's.

"...surviving Marshall's new ball burst.." clearly puzzled you. It referred to the period of play where the bowlers are using a new ball. It is rounder and harder than a used ball, and can be used with great effect by the fast bowlers. The stitched seam around the ball is much more raised and prominent when it's new. Some medium and fast bowlers specialise in landing the ball on the seam, causing it's path to suddenly deviate. This period of play can be more dangerous, physically, for the batsmen too.

You might be interested to examine his average and economy rate throughout his career. His stats in the latter third of his career are phenomenal and hence why a lot of people rate him so highly is not because he is still playing test cricket at 40 years old but that his best years have been since he turned 30!
edited to add some figures. between 25-29 avg 28.47. between 30- 34 he averaged 25.45. between 35-40 he averaged 21.39. Since turning 31 he has taken over 300 wickets at an average of just over 22.
That, I propose, puts a different light on Anderson as it shows how he has grown his skill amd was still improving at ages where most other seam bowlers have retired.

Statistics don't lie. Ultimately in cricket, only two stats matter for bowlers. The number of runs they concede for each wicket taken; and the number of deliveries they must make for each wicket taken. The second is less important, but because it doesn't matter how many wickets you take if you don't bowl the opposing team out twice in the allotted time for play, it remains important. With that in mind, and giving the economy rate twice the weighting of the strike rate; the top ten bowlers in Test Cricket, at least, are:
    1) Curtly Ambrose; 2) Glenn McGrath; 3) Shaun Pollock; 4) Muttiah Muralitharan; 5) Fred Truman; 6) Imran Kahn; 7) Malcolm Marshal; 8) Richard Hadlee; 9) Lance Gibbs; and 10) Courtney Walsh.
That's 4 West Indians, and 1 each from Australia, South Africa, Sri Lanka, England, Pakistan and New Zealand. The next five on the list (in order) were Wasim Akram (Pakistan), Allen Donald (South Africa), Shane Warne (Australia), Denis Lilley (Australia), and Ravichandran Ashwin (India).
