  • Len discusses some of the challenges that navies faced in identifying, developing, and using new technologies. He uses historical examples to highlight lessons learned (and, in some cases, forgotten and relearned) by navies as they face technological challenges.
Leonard Heinz is a retired financial services attorney with an active interest in military and naval history. He is the co-author of "Innovating Victory: Naval Technology in Three Wars and Clash of Fleets: Naval Battles of the Great War," both published by Naval Institute Press.

Two of the common themes for successfully adopting a new technology appear to be competition and collaboration. Multiple teams working on the same problem, different service branches competing for missions (and funding), and Allied nations sharing technology are some of the examples mentioned in this nicely presented talk.

Sadly, no one seems to refer to the "Square Law of Combat". Assume complete equality between two Battleships. The force ratio is
    1:1 .
Now add one (1) gun to one side. The force ratio is NOT 8:9. It becomes 64:81.
