  • As the 60th Anniversary of the Cuban Missile Crisis approaches, Michael Whitby will discuss a little known aspect of the Cold War crisis that brought the nuclear powers to the brink of war. Through the end of October through to mid November1962, Canadian maritime forces were involved in sustained operations that defended Canadian interests and protected the US Navy's northern flank as it operated off Cuba. In several instances, the Canadians filled responsibilities previously met by the US Navy so they could reinforce their activities further south. This presentation will correct several myths associated with Canada's involvement in the Crisis, demonstrate the success of the partnership between the Royal Canadian Navy and the US Navy in continental defense, and, in incidents that could be right out of a James Bond movie, detail the nature of Soviet activities in the seas off eastern Canada and Northeast USA. This will be a fascinating study on Cold War naval operations.
Michael Whitby is Senior Naval Historian with the Department of National Defence in Ottawa.

Before seeing this I'd not heard about the Canadian side of the missile crisis - great talk, great sourcing of speakers; many thanks to the speaker and the organisers

Thank you, Canada! Couldn't ask for a better neighbor to watch our backs during the highest crisis of the Cold War.
