Thank you Jim. I turned 71 last month and tried to enlist in the submarine navy when I was 17. Recruiter said well take these tests, and we will talk. I thought they were kind of easy. Just common sense stuff. Well I scored the highest in the state of Delaware and they begged my parents to let me go. They promised a free college education! Parents wouldn’t do it due to these losses. One of my regrets for not doing what I wanted. We never lost another sub. I wanted to be part of that.

Captain took on a whole heck of a lot material to cover in one single presentation. It’s like teaching the history of mankind in one hour.
Considering all he still did an outstanding job.
Regarding putting these wonderful presentations on UA-cam for thousands of folks to hear for years to come, the Q & A portion is valuable too hear also.
We out here in UA-cam land can’t hear the questions during the Q & A session, maybe get a wireless mike to pass around, or gonna lose your viewers before the video is finished. Just some thoughts and suggestions for what they’re worth….

Surprising the sonar was so primitive given there were computers around at the time and nobody put them together? Microphone arrays with computers. The big ear! :) Think pressure vessel and the inner people/equipment vessel. Any sound that leaks out, you transmit the opposite waveform to cancel. Propellers are noisy, so use isolated jet pumps quietly moving water.

Jim,,,,,seems to me that an automatic scram should allow the crew to delay it until the boat is controlled........ ( however.. maybe that is a fatal delay. I dont know that part of it. )
