Jimmy Page - Led Zeppelin's founder and guitarist, previously was a member of another great band, The Yardbirds. The Yardbirds released many singles, which Jimmy believed led to the demise of the band. When Jimmy was left to create a band to replace the defunct Yardbirds, Jimmy believed that FM radio would lead to the success of album-oriented Rock, so the band adopted a "no singles" policy. Led Zeppelin never had a no. 1 single in the US because they rarely released them....period. Had they released singles, they would have eventually had a no. 1 without a doubt....but Zeppelin believed their music was an "album experience.". And of course, with 300 million album sales, they did just fine. GOATs.
LZ never wanted to release singles which at the time were required to be no longer than 3 minutes and they did not want to be judged just by singles. They wanted the freedom to experiment and explore. No singles were released in the UK, but the band's record company did eventually release some of their songs as singles in the USA. Probably they didn't get to number one as millions of fans already had the songs on their albums.
A great song by one of my favorite bands. You’re right about the imagery. Songs back then told a story and you can picture it in your mind. Imagery and story telling is not found in today’s music.
Hey Lee, you are so right about music telling us a story back in the day. There isn't much imagery or storytelling anymore and we don't hear bands of this calibre either 🤩💜
Given this song was never released as a single AND is a nearly 8 minute song, it's no surprise. However, despite the charts, it's been given its due reverence.
The Rain Song is absolutely beautiful, but the Song Remains The Same, needs to be played first they flow together. Ten Years Gone is beautiful, I also love the slow blues of Tea For One. Tea For One, is after Plant & his wife were seriously injured in a car accident, he had to be away to record the Presence album. He wasn’t happy about being away from his family, & it’s about how slow time drags on when your away from those you love. Robert had crushed his leg & elbow, & was in a wheelchair for about a year, not knowing if he’d ever walk again. His wife Maureen had a fractured skull & other injuries, she lost a lot of blood & her brain swelled. Page & manager Peter Grant pushed to do this album, & Plant wasn’t to happy about it. Something to do with taxes, they couldn’t do it in England, so they were in the US.
Yet this song has been number one on countdown list every year, if not one it’s been number two. It was number one on Classic Vinyl top 400 countdown 2024. If it has fallen to two, it’s been very few times.
@@playitagainsue many if not all of their songs should have been number one hits, but the didn’t release them as singles. The didn’t want people to just buy singles, they wanted them to hear the whole album. Many of their really great songs aren’t known, unless you listened to the albums.
I heard "Stairway To Heaven" is one of those songs that Guitar / Music shops banned customers from playing, because just about every budding guitarist would test out the guitars in the store by playing or trying to play the acoustic intro to it ( usually badly ! ) 😅🤣 .. My favourite LZ song is "D'yer Mak'er" .. It was reggae styled, released as a single in 1973, and made No.20 in the US.
😂Hey Wayne, I could see why they would do that if everyone was constantly butchering the song. It would be an assault on the ears after a while haha. That is a great song. I will have to check that one out. Thanks Wayne 🤩💙
Did not know about #2- thank you for the info, ladies. But I would have thought that the album Led Zep II was a #1 seller... I bought it the day it came out before Christmas, 1969 (AND Led Zep I at the same time- all the mags like Rolling Stone and Creem and NME warned that Zep were frauds, avoid). Sounded great to me. Peace, love and bellbottoms.
Hi 27th Angel, You are welcome. the album may have become number 1. I am not sure about that. I only know they didn't have any #1 singles on U.S. billboard charts. But we know they didn't release that many singles so the is part of it. Thanks so much for you comment and for tuning in 🤩💜
Hi Srt8, thanks for tuning in. Check out the Floyd video I just put out a few days ago. I also did another zep song a while back..check it out too. I will definitely get on the other 2 for you. Thanks for the suggestions 🤩
A big reason Zepp never had a number one song is they really didn't release singles. They released entire albums. So without a single tp promote, it would have been very hard.
Zep never released singles. It didn't matter. DJs played the whole song anyway.. They sold 37 million copies of this Lbum. More albums than most #1 singles.
Zeppelin didn’t really believe in singles. I think they might have released 3 over 11 years. We were into the album experience, and FM radio would play half an album or the whole thing at times. This song was never released as a single, yet it’s considered the best rock song ever.
@@playitagainsue So true. They began by word of mouth in what was considered underground music clubs. After they first started, they always sold out and had to add additional nights to some of their concerts to try to accommodate their fans.
Led zeppelin never had a number one single is because zeppelin never released singles! They only believed their music should be heard through a whole album! Zeppelin did have a few number one albums!
@@playitagainsue The record industry played no part in creating their success, which is how its usually done. Jimmy Page financed and recorded the first album out of his pocket, and got the biggest recording contract in Rock history from Atlantic Records as a result. Because Jimmy has enormous credibility in the industry prior to Zeppelin (as a session musician he played on 600+ songs, including Petula Clark's "Downtown," Tom Jones' "Its Not Unusual," the "Goldfinger" soundtrack, and hundreds of others....and because of Jimmy's fame with The Yardbirds), Jimmy negotiated a deal that gave Zeppelin complete artistic freedom to record and release what they wanted, exactly as they wanted. Because they had negotiated so much control of their own content, the record industry resented them - Zeppelin didn't need to be supported or hyped by the press, and Zep owed them nothing. After Zep became the biggest band in the world, the press became even more resentful, and tried to tear them down. But fans didn't care, and bought their albums in massive quantities. Years later after the press' pettiness was exposed, their narrative flipped, and now its hard to find rock press that doesn't place Zep at or near the top of the rock world....because, honestly, they deserve it.
@@tektoniks_architects Wow, that is amazing insight. The press was really petty weren't they. It is so weird why some people just have to try to pull talented people down...like they are jealous of them. Talent should be celebrated. Thanks for that great explanation, Tektonics 😎🧡

John Paul Jones is a classically trained composer and both he and Jimmy were session musicians!
That explains why this song seems like it is done by a composer...since he is. Thanks, Julie 😀

Had it been released as a single, the geniuses the programmed radio station playlists would've cut it down to 3 minutes and TOTALLY RUINED IT.
