For me so far this year what I have been learning to improve as a guitarist: 1. Learn songs- start to finish, intro, chorus, solos, etc. 2. Master the neck- scales across the neck, patterns 3. Chord progressions- learn how to play I-IV-V using barre chords 4. Phrasing- legato, bends, vibrato Good video Steve and thanks for the tips and motivation as always. I found to break down practice into shorter more frequent daily sessions more effective at least for me than one long session. Focus on one thing. Play SLOW to a metronome until you work up speed. Start 50 BPM and once playing RELAXED controlled and effective bump up another 10BPM. Soon you will be at 120BPM.
Learning in bite size increments & then applying what I learned has really helped me. I think we all try to cram to much in at once. Being patient is important. And make sure you have fun, cause that is what playing guitar is all about.
Very deep advices about our guitar journey. One other element that motivates me is material: I love to understand how my guitar works at a mechanical level, and improve it, or see how a different instrument gives me different ideas.

just started watching your videos and finding them very informative.I have wanted to play all my life,i have owned many guitars,electric and acoustic.I taught myself to read sheet music,i can count note times,i know the notes on the guitar neck,i know most all the major chords,i know a few scales but i can never seem to put it all together...Strumming is something i just cannot get down,i get frustrated,quit for a few years and try again,quit and try again. I have tried tablature but nothing ever seems to come together.I just don't think i have the ear other rhythm coordination to learn.I won't quit,hopefully someday it will come together.Thanks for the videos

Finding the right teacher that fits where you are, and listens to you is the key, for sure. I learned a long time ago that being a teacher (Professor, Montessori educator, and private and group guitar instructor for years) is that it's never about me and my agenda, because everyone is completely different, so the key is listening to each person and what they want/need. I had the same thing happen to me but then I asked a fried of mine for lessons but spaced them out every 3-4 weeks depending on his touring schedule. It gave me time to absorb and actually practice what he taught me. That has helped me a lot!

I think they can really help when learning the scales .. well I have another question , what is your tip for learning dominant 7 chords and all the inversions? How can I use all the inversions not only 3 of them (I mean when improvising in 1-4-5 progression).. Thanks for your great content

Always have it where u can see it. Commit 5 mins to your guitar. Thats it. Youll find youll practice more than 5 mins and even if it is just 5 mins, better than nothing.

You are always long winded but over the last few years you have taught me a great portion of my overall guitar experience and I thank you for for it. Again I am great full for all of your work,time and help. Please try to be a little less of a speaker and more of a teacher. If this comment seams long well, it is. I’m not sure as to be short myself without being rude and I definitely don’t want to sound rude. Keep up the great work and I look forward to seeing more of what you do best. I'm struggling to play the chords without my other fingers muting it, any tips? I'm on electric as well
