Ethical harvesting is number one priority, much respect Piet. When I hunt here in Michigan with my 300 win mag I don’t take shots past 300. Even though me and my friend practice at 6-800 yards no problem here at the ranches. Too much to go wrong at extended ranges and I believe the animals deserve more respect and an instant painless death.
I couldn't agree with you more. I also feel that the animal deserves more respect. They're not "targets". Having the ability to shoot distance is for enjoyment and to tax ones self. Shooting at animals at great distance removes "the hunt".
What is a too far of an ethical shot to one person may not be for another. If a person can make extremely high percentage hits at 800 yards, just as high a hit percentage as another person can do at 300, then there is no difference, right? If one lives and breathes ballistics and puts it to use on a regular basis, then hitting with high confidence at further distances, then the sky is the limit as long as the shot can be reproduced with high certainty. I hope since us hunters should be on the same side of thought then this scenario is accepted.
Dear Pieter I’m 100% for 0 % animal suffering. Your methods are efficient and respected. I love the fact that you love nature. Your commitment to ethical hunting is evident taking into account your obvious fitness and skill. I’ve always tried to limit the risk of wounding an animal by setting rules and parameters for myself. Long range shooting is great fun when making holes in paper though. I commend your commitment to ethical hunting by shooting at realistic distances where external factors like wind and mirage are manageable, and having equipment that is so accurate that a out of sync heartbeat gets forgiven. Your endeavours bring back wonderfull memories now that we are living in Western Australia.
So my wording was probably not the best with regards to my comments about how I feel about long range hunting. Let me clarify, I will never go hunting with the goal of finding animals at extended ranges. There are just too many variables that are completely out of your control. Watch my thoughts here - ua-cam.com/video/LZY75rK6hB0/v-deo.html
It's great to see a marksman that understands the difference between 'Can I versus Should I' when the skillset is applied to hunting. 'Can I versus Should I' can be one of the quickest way to separate non-ethical versus ethical hunting.
I still think its unethical shots. Yes, It can go well. But the head is the most mobile part of an animal, and no matter how good of a shot you are there are infinite things that can go wrong, wind, animal moving/scared, error in shooting, weapon or bullet etc etc etc. It all takes a couple cm and you have a animal without bottom cheek starving to death, or a blown of mule.. Why not just take normal vital area shot? Its not like they can go anywhere.
Henrik Johansson Thats right but if he would aimed at the chest to hit the heart, lungs etc. and Misses je would hit the stomach and the buck will suffer unnecesarry if je misses the shot in the Head the possibiltys for the round to hit nothing are higher
Agreed he was confident in his ability and by all means he preformed amazingly but I’m the same way I very rarely shoot in front of the shoulder but if I was as rightly confident in my ability I would have done the same thing
IMHO if your not ethical your not a hunter or gamesmen or woodsman all the above. I've let trophy's walk becouse I wasn't 100% sure. When in doubt don't!
Piet, respect on your principal on hunting. I wish more hunters understood the ethics of ending the life of an animal. We have too many who want to “shoot” at silly ranges; that is not hunting. I’d rather go home empty handed than wounding. Thanks for sharing your trip into the Karoo.
For sure! I've practiced out to 500 yards but I always try to go for 100 at most. Weighs a lot less on the mind to take them right away rather than have them endure such an ordeal of running and pain.
Piet, as a newbie to your channel (2-3 weeks), I just have to remark on how far your videography skills have developed. This was a great video, don't get me wrong, but your recent ones are so much smoother. Good work, mate. P.S. I have a lot of friends who are shooters, so I've been sharing your competition videos far and wide.
Another great video Piet! I’ve been watching your stuff for a couple weeks now, definitely top notch content and severely underrated. I’m from Western Australia and thanks to you I bought a vortex diamond back tactical 4-16 for my .223 rem. Do a lot of pest control (roos, rabbits, foxes, cats, dogs etc). I’ve learnt so much off you and now I’ve joined the local range to compete in order to get even better! Regardless, thank you so much, love your content! Keep up the good work and busy life! Love from Western Australia!
That hand looks rather ouch! .. hope you're feeling much better. I've been subscribed for a little over two weeks now and I've watched tons of your awesome videos. I'd love to visit the Karoo someday when I've learnt to shoot my BRNO .308 well. Love your content once again and speedy recovery on that hand.
I have no idea what it's like to hunt like that in South Africa. Like you, I have always strived for head and neck shots on deer here in the eastern USA. I commend you on your ethics and prowess. Thanks for the video. Looks like a fabulous trip.

Lekker content. Wordlclass headshots. Was really windy but you Ace it buddy. Love that you respect hunting . 1. You don’t wanna leave any game with a painful slow death . 2. You Don’t take the shot if its too far away. 3. Not shooting game thats not yet mature. Next time please do weigh your kills and put up like a review window in the corner “Animal Gender. Weight. Scientific name. Distance. Impact point (shot placement) etc” Like they do in the THE HUNTER:CALL OF THE WILD game.
Excellent video! loved it and love your ethical hunting style. I just bought an MDT ESS chasis thanks to you channel 👍 got a half MOA group at 100 + 200 with the tikka t3x varmint .223 using the chasis and factory ammo

Great video, fantastic content, lovely storyline. Carry on carrying on Pieter!I see a storm in a teacup coming because of the long range hunting "stupid" comment. For all the long range hunters/varminters out there, let us disagree without being disagreeable. Opinions are only offensive when you take it personally, don't. :-)
Hey, great footage! Got a question. What type of rings do you use with your Strike Eagle 5-15x56 ? Which hight is it ? Like the fact, that you are talking about non suffering for the animal. Good ethical behaviour !
Hi Piet, I enjoy your hunting videos and found the one where the guys got you to shoot the Kudu mount, kak funny. I saw you pulled the same move on another mate of yours.
