Queen - Drowse (Official Lyric Video)
/ queenofficial
One of Queen's most underrated songs. Roger nails it of course.
marsmunky orky along with tenement funster, I’m in love with my car it is one of Rogers best album tracks.
agreed
It is still my favorite. It sounds exactly like what it's supposed to be.
Matthew Medley and together with a human body!
And no synthesizers!!!
Queen, the group where the drummer with one of the best rock voices in the business isn't the lead singer because the best voice ever happens to be in the band also... where all four members coined massive hits... where the guitarist made his own guitar... i often wonder what stars aligned in the heavens that year?
Telegraph 👍
I'm sayin'.
I couldn't have say it better...
And then they work with David Bowie and under pressure happens. BEST. SONG. EVER!
@Telegraph Never, in my 43 years, have I read a better description of this glorious band.

My life in a great song.
💓 oh yeah.
For writing this song when Roger was still fairly young, he really hit on, or should I say he was writing from the perspective of a much older soul. Ahh...the thoughts that inhabit middle age. A great song indeed!
+chippr63 He always did, with all his songs, it's crazy how much he knew in his twenties.
I agree, Roger was no more than 27 when he wrote this song but it seems like if it were a song with profound lyrics from a 45 year old man who's seen it all, Thats why I love Roger
It baffles me how he was able to write like this at such a young age. I'm that age right now and I agree, the song sounds like they come from a middle age soul, nothing like me and my peers at all. How Roger was able to be such a fun-loving, drum-blasting member who at the same time had such deep thoughts is a mystery for me, and makes me love him and Queen even more.
@@jaimevilchiz2740 27 isn't *that* young, folks. Orson Welles made Citizen Kane when he was 25.
chippr63 I always felt inside he had an old soul.
I find so sweet how Roger has always written about youth, he would at least mention being young in most of his songs, like These Are The Days Of Our Lives, Tenement Funster, Sheer Heart Attack, Radio Gaga,...
I'm in love with my car
Really true, you caught perfectly the concept! 😘
So pure
My heart-
ana júlia it’s definitely inspiring. The way he talks about youth/teenage years, and compares his childhood/youth to him at the time of writing the song. The comparisons are always beautiful. He is definitely one of the world’s best songwriters and performers.
The Loser in the End
i feel like this song could definitely be played on a tv show. either when a character is laying in a bed unblinking and staring at the ceiling as the camera gets farther away from them or at a series or season finale. as they go back and look through their memories, this song is playing and it would just make me really emotional
I thought of exactly that when I first heard this!
i feel like it would fit in the show 'I Am Not Okay With This' perfectly

@@rula42 When Walter White dies in Breaking Bad and the camera slowly zooms out, this song would fit perfectly
Freddie mentioned more than once that Roger was the one who kept up with current events. He read the newspaper every day and watched the news. He knew what was going on in the world. I think his pretty face and hard drinking, partying ways made it hard to see the extremely intelligent, educated, and thoughtful man he was underneath.
Still one of my all time favorite Roger Taylor songs.
+KR YW IMO the best Queen song!!!
Bajor Robert Yes it is!
+Bajor Robert I agree
always
Certainly!
I love Roger’s songs because it really brings out the heavy rock aspect of Queen. He has the singing voice of someone who sings heavy rock. He’s an intelligent and phenomenal songwriter. People need to appreciate him more than just his looks, yes, he’s a pretty boy but he’s way more than that. Some of my favorite songs from them are just written by him and/or written and sung by him.
Compared to Freddie and Brian, Roger's lyrics aren't as polished, or as sophisticated, or as theatrical, with great narratives, or imaginative themes. But they are profound in their own way, the poetry in them is more gritty and often existential, and they sometimes strike you right in the gut, because they are so relatable. (Course he had his self-indulgent moments too, like i'm in love with my car, but really, that song was quintessential Roger) I really really love this song Drowse. There is so much awesome Queen material that this of course ends up an underrated song. But it's indeed one of my favourites.
Can you give examples songs you think fit this description - polished, sophisticated, theatrical, with great narratives or imaginative themes?! Cause I disagree with this! And what do you think about The days of our lives, Innuendo?
@@user-vb6ol4vg7k Er, calm down. It's just my opinion, of course others would/can think differently. I'm not dissing Roger's songwriting at all; just that his songwriting is of a different style from Brian and Freddie. Songs of Freddie and Brian which are very theatrical and contain narratives, wow, where to start? Killer Queen, Bohemian Rhapsody, White Queen, March of the Black Queen, Seven Seas of Rhye, My Fairy King are some of the many theatrical examples. Even some Brian numbers like Tie Your MOther Down and Fat Bottomed Girls had some cheeky narratives, while Save Me, Sail Away Sweet Sister and All Dead All Dead have more poignant ones. As for imaginative themes, my ultimate is 39 by Brian, about space-time dilation! Due to the fact that these songs are more grandiose and creative, I feel they are more sophisticated. Roger's songwriting has a power all of its own, it's more straightforward, basic and honest, and Those Were The Days of Our Lives, like you mentioned, is another suckerpunch of emotion; I feel sad whenever I hear it. Innuendo is another brilliant track co-written by Rog and Freddie
@@TheEberdz There's only you, who need to calm down and stop humiliating Roger with this "compared to Freddie and Brian..."
No one is humiliating anyone.
I agree that Roger's lyrics are pure in their simplicity.
@@MM-dq2pi& Lady Berd Actually, it's Deaky that has the most pure simple lyrics. Freddie is the theatrical/campy, "sophisticated" one, although Roger has his share of campy. Brian tends to have the most story telling in his lyrics, often somewhat personal, although Roger also does this a bit (projecting his life experiences into his songs) and Freddie does some fantastical world building, particularly in his earlier songs. As for the poignant, all of them have them. Of course Freddie and Brian wrote the most, so they'll be up there and John wrote the least, so it's harder to find them in his songs (You And I, Spread Your Wings).
These Are The Days Of Our Live and Radio Ga Ga are right up there with any of Queen's songs in terms of profound lyrics, and One Vision would have been, if that "rotter Freddie" didn't "sabotage" Roger's song. And Drowse is surprisingly "polished" and mature for someone who was only in his mid to late 20s when he wrote it telling a story from the perspective of someone in middle age...

Christine Ze Queen, The band where one of the best voices isn’t lead because the lead singer has the best voice in the world
Another great song by Roger. Easily one of the best voices in rock.
I think Roger is severely underrated in the Queen fandom. Most of the times, he's just seen as the pretty face, the party king besides Freddie, the immature Baby (okay, I admit, hiding yourself in a closet is not that grown up), the one that never thinks about anything as opposed to Brian who always overthinks everything. And maybe those descriptions somehow suit him, but when I listen to the deep and nostalgic lyrics of Drowse, Radio Gaga or Days of our Lives, I see that there's more. That Roger is actually a really intelligent man that does not ponder any less about the important things in life than Brian. Some songs on his solo albums (like Surrender) support this further. Roger is more than a beautiful face that likes to be reckless, just like Freddie is more than his sexuality. I love all four of them equally, but I somehow see the fans reducing Roger to just one part of his personality more than the other three and that makes me sad.
He is a Leo astrologically, so that is why you get this impression and most people do.Leo's in general are really positive people and to public they only show that happy go lucky side.. Leo's don't show inner world to public arena, only to close ones, so you can only see it in lyrics and approach. Leo speaking here too, so I always saw those things you say about Roger and understood them.

Why are there 65 dislikes on one of the best songs written by the best drummer of the best band to ever grace the planet?
Only Queen, only Queen could have an excellent drummer with an amazing voice, a miraculous guitarist with a stunning voice, an incredible bass player who can sing well though he claims otherwise, and an extraordinary lead singer who had phenomenal piano skills.
Queen is the only band to have each of its members write hits, which is ehy each of them were individually inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame.

it's the fantastic drowse of the afternoon Sundays. That is literally how I feel every Sunday. I can really relate with this song.
Queen has so many underrated songs, especially in the first five albums, it is truly my favorite band. So sad to be in the age where people consider Ariana Grande's work to be quality, and think that rock is the shallow genre.

This song reminds me of my youth spent in hamburg, Ger. after returning from my first holiday in New York City. in 1976, and wondering about my place in this life and the next and whether I will be ever contributing to this alienating world, or will I forever be condemned to repeat to a mediocre, non-sequitur existence in a Kafka'esque social structure that hinders and destroys individualism and fosters cohesion and conformity..... I never stopped wondering. This song gets me there!

Roger has the true rock voice in the group -- yeah, the drummer has the best ROCK VOICE.
Public confession to Roger. I was a senior in high school in 1985. I was in a creative writing class, which I would love today, but I was a lazy sod in school and didn't want to do any work. The 70-year-old teacher gave us a writing assignment that was due by the end of class, and I had nothing to write about. Knowing this old man had probably never heard a Queen song in his life, I just copied the lyrics from Drowse. He read it and loved it. Teacher: this looks like it was written by someone much older. You wrote this? Me: Yep.
Fast forward to the last week of the school year, and the Senior Edition comes out -- a little booklet full of seniors artsy things from poems to drawings. I browse through it, and there is MY poem called Drowse! "How dare they publish MY poem without asking me!" So, this one lazy day that was supposed to be a song seen by only one person and completely forgotten is now an act of plagiarism that will follow me forever. I DID meet Roger once in 1991, but I didn't tell him the story and clear my name when I had the chance.
That story, in and of itself, would make a great subject for a song.

Queen was such a stacked band, everyone were great!
I’m 20 and I never had that youth Rog is singing about, maybe just wrong generation, but listening to this song makes me feel like I have, and makes me want to cry like hell, wanting these times and that feeling back, though I never had ’em, which makes me cry even more.

I know a lot of people would say that Roger’s best song was Radio Ga Ga but I think this might be the best song he wrote. It’s so beautiful, too bad they never played this live
This was one of the first times I’ve liked a slow and kind of sad song the first time I’d ever heard it! Roger is very talented and I’m so glad that the 4 became a band because without Queen the world would be depressing. I don’t know one person who doesn’t know a song by them and I’m only 11.

To me the lyrics are about a middle-aged person looking back on their life and realizing it's all added up to mediocrity. You aren't different from everyone else, you aren't the hero, or the rock star or any of those impossible things you thought were possible when you were 15. No-one is going to remember you a 100 years after you are dead. You are going to be one more anonymous corpse among millions of anonymous corpses. It's about romanticizing being 15 again because your problems back then were nothing compared to the problems of adulthood. Yet, at 15, those small problems were all consuming and you couldn't wait to grow up and conquer the world. It's about depression, settling, giving up on your dreams because you are now too old to turn them into reality. And if you think about the pointlessness of it all, of your life, you might not get out of your chair ever again. All the failures, mistakes and shortcomings weighing g you down. So, you choose to fall into a stupor, a numbness, a drowse, in order to keep going. It is the inevitable survival tool used by every person of a certain age who realizes all the promise or the ability to reinvent oneself, is gone from your grasp forever. I can't believe Roger Taylor was just 27 when he wrote this. The music is ,in fact, drowsy and hypnotic. Trance-like. Roger was an old soul, I think. Quite thoughtful. Despite outward appearances.
