Change is always happening. According to Eastern philosophy, which Bowie was into when he was trying on a hippie identity in his young days, states that the only permanent phenomena is change. Bowie was a deep thinker, as well as being a chameleon, corinthians and caricature.
To me this song is about facing whatever fears you may have in life, whether its something you can or cant control, you have to face it and embrace it because afterall life is full of change and if you arent facing the "strange" to then you will never find your self. Its one of my favourite lyrics, "turn and face the strange" and it means so much to me. Whenever im feeling down or anxious it helps me decide on whats important to me and what will help me be the best i can.
i'm not saying that your interpretation is wrong, in fact most art is free to interpret as you may want, but iirc, David bowie wrote this with the themes because he felt like everyone wanted him to make a specific sort of music, stick to the same rock and roll, but he wanted to experiment and find his own sound. so he's telling everyone to face whats new and not to turn it away.

I'm not a spiritual guy, but I have had a personal connection with this man on the deepest level one can have with a musical hero. From my childhood days when my dad would put on the Ziggy Stardust album to present, I get the chills when I listen to him. Like so many other fans, I was crushed when he left us all.
My Dad never played Ziggy Stardust, but from when I first heard it in 1974 odd to now, I still get chills listening to it. It was my cousin, Mike who first played it for me, but I was already a fan. How privileged are we to have lived at the same time as such a musical genius. 😀

Last year in college this song played constantly on one radio state. Again and again and again. My buddies would listen to it all the time whenever we drove! Kinda the song of my college experience!
1:10 "just gonna have to be a different man" hits a lot different when you consider how many different men he was throughout his career. Ziggy, Button Eyes, Jareth, The Thin White Duke. Every one of them a completely different man. This song almost feels like he either predicted or planned out his whole career.
Remus loved Hunky Dory more than anything. It was by turns bright and happy - then dark and introspective. He felt that David Bowie must have some super human insight into his soul. Even if he didn’t always fully understand the lyrics, he felt as though they somehow made sense.
This is and always will be my favorite david bowie album, i know it by heart, thank you bowie, for being the musical artist that you are, you left behind a untouchable legacy, that no one can take away from neither you or us!
What makes this song so special is it captures perfectly the ambivalence we all have when we have to make changes to our lives and how we cannot go back ("but I can't trace time"). We may try to fake it with small but insufficient ones but to grow we have to face the "strange" (a nice allusion and alliteration to "strain") that change brings. It is up to us to either fake adaptation or embrace it as the only certain thing is that we are going to get older as time passes. Musically it is capture in the unstable opening of the chords and the nice harmonic palette and wide-ranging colors of the vocal delivery in the song (with the influence of the jazz tinged pop songs of Sinatra infusing the song).
When I'm sad I always listen to this song, it may be stupid, but it feels like David Bowie himself is hugging me and cheering me up to be happy again. It makes me smile and dance like a fool everytime. And I think this was what he wanted

September 19, 2024 9:15am listening to this song on my brother's birthday, this is one of his favorite song. I remember back in 1976 listening to this song. "Changes". Im also a fan of David Bowie.❤
My favourite singer!
Totally & Agree ... I hope my YT Bowie songs as a one man band makes him smile ... Im lucky to be able to make the connection with his spirit.
A beautiful song and Bowie is a man and he never said otherwise.
Definitely one of the all time greatest songs - can’t wait to hear the new mix of Life on Mars? as well.
Another new mix of Life On Mars? There's one from 2016. Do you need a new mix of that song every year or something
@@dedpxl the original will always be there and I don’t mind hearing a fresh take on it with modern technology so, sure!
@@dedpxl plus the 2016 version feels kind of void without the drums in there.
Sure was ... I do Bowie Videos on my YT Channel just to stay connected .. Bowie fans are so amazingly kind.
Totally agree ... I love covering his songs ... Space Boy on YT but sometimes it goes totally wrong.
I miss you so much but you are eternal, you’re still with us and I love you
