I would never forget the day I met her.. OMG her conversation changed my life.. she stopped what she was doing to have a convo with me.. I love this lady
Granddaddy I.U. wrote it and it was really Shanté grasping at straws becuz she couldn’t sell any records. She tried to use the Roxannes Revenge template but it didn’t work.
This will go down in history as another classic and legendary interview Sway! I was a teenager when all this was going down back in Philly. I remember all of this as if it was yesterday. This was during a time when hip-hop had substance. I’ve never heard Roxanne Shante speak in an interview before, and I am beyond impressed with how she handled herself. I can’t wait to watch the Netflix movie and see what else she has in store for the future.
Shante Started Goin at Dudes! She want at KRS LYte, Latifa,1st, Shes QB b4 Nas. Or mobb deep, Hit Em Up put you on a plate eat you up like a buffet. anybody that can get served up.
I'm just so captivated by her storytelling no wonder she's a legend. I had never even heard of her before now but I glad that her story got told cuz today's hip hop needed this and the movie was phenomenal it should been a box office hit. And Chante Adams seems like such a sweet humble girl this is a major move for her & she's definitely about to be making major moves in the industry I wish her much success. Get that bag girl!
She was queen of the "Juice Crew", which was all the artists that producer DJ Marley Marl put out from like '86-'89. She was bad - wasn't scared of the men. Check-out her songs - "Have a Nice Day", Big Mama" and "Brothers Ain't Sh!t".
Legend. None of these women MC's wouldn't exist: Mc Lyte, Queen Latifah, Salt n' Pepa, Lil Kim, Foxy Brown, Oaktown 357, Lady of Rage, Remy Martin, Nicki Minaj... NONE OF THEM! Bow DOWN!
theabstrakt84 Right! Some don’t understand how far this goes back.Thats why they need to know there history. But,They all came out during the same era.Even McLyte was kinda in there. Many don’t know who Angie Stone originally was.
To me she is the queen of hip hop... that joint she did with mobb deep on that nas queens bridge album is a banger the love I have for this woman and her voice
The best interview Sway ever done with legends and he don't know. She is the most legendary rapper speaking eloquently he's ever had telling the history of hip-hop. ROXANNE SHANTE IS THA TRULY QUEEN OF HIP-HOP!!!
How come you didn't save for a rainy day. " when you're walking around with a cloud over your head, all you want is a nice umbrella" I felt that...but now we know better.
Just watched the movie , definitely one of the best movies I saw in a wow the production , the acting, the cast and everything was on point I learned about about the where and how hip-hop was birthed and how it all started from this movie that I never knew about before.
Just watched her movie on Netflix it is perfect and I’m glad she is a rap pioneer she is a legend and I was really shocked and surprised she knew Biz Markie and also she met and taught a young nas (illmatic) 💯💯💯💯💯
If there was no Roxanne Shante' there would be no MC Lyte, Salt n Pep and Queen Lah....they all come from the school of Roxanne Shante'. Its so dope her story is being told! Just watched the netflix movie and they did a good job. And Great casting, Chante' Adams looks like her and did a great job.
Not true. Roxanne is a legend, but there were other female artists who recorded songs before she came along. Her success is one-part skill and one-part timing. If she never came out, there would still be other female rappers recording songs, and I say this with respect as I'm a big fan of Shante. This song came out in 1979 or 1980 and you can hear the influence on Shante's style: ua-cam.com/video/L21RljGgTZ0/v-deo.html
Powerule true, but she was a blu print for the artist I named. That's why I said if it wasn't for her, those women who came after her would have been different. I say this because I see her in each of the acts I named.
TTSantiago821 + Well, she certainly put "female" rappers on the map in terms of impact in 1984. Shante's success had a lot to do with timing. Like she said, no one expected hip-hop to last very long back then. So, yes, she's an important figure who dropped a monumental song. But her career lagged and she basically fizzled away, for reasons obvious in the movie. As far as blueprint, Shante was following a blueprint. She didn't create that style, which is why I sent the link. Shante had a few good songs, but no album when she was at the height of her short career. The only real comparison among the group you mention is Salt & Pepa, who came out right after Shante. (They had the same rap pattern, and S&P initially followed the same rhyme blueprint that Shante followed). To say without Shante, there wouldn't have been other female recording artists is a stretch. Remember, The Sequence dropped a big song in 1979. If anything, female rappers weren't sticking with the art form because no one expected it to last. Kool Moe Dee, who was considered one of the best in NYC, stopped rapping for a while to attend college. What's most admirable about Shante is what she's accomplished after her rap career concluded. She's a very powerful woman who truly cares about community and social achievement. She's in the national public light again because of this great movie, but she's been active socially for a long time.
Man her and biz got busy in 86 at the concert for the def fresh crew song biz was the beat and Roxanne was the wordsmith I'm only 17 but tht shit was dope idgaf about my generation man my mindset is totally different from them I love old school wouldn't be here if it wasn't for the old school
Bravo Roxane Shante, you’re how a representative of Hip Hop culture should be. Intelligent, articulate, strong and empowered. As a mid 40’s Latino Man from the Bronx you and Lyte were my favorite female MCs and in my top 10 favorite MCs. I will definitely be watching the movie.
Such an inspiring woman. I've loved Roxanne Shante for her killer raps and status as a pioneer, but I have newfound respect for her generosity in sharing her overflowing wisdom. She's really adept at telling her story so that we can all understand and benefit from the lessons she's learned. Thanks for this interview.
It would be so dope if Roxanne Shante did a compilation album with all up-and-coming women rappers cause they definitely need the exposure and support. Bbymutha, Cupcakke, etc. all deserve more shine!
Exist N Nature I do freestyle with real Hardcore but I was part for the slam poetry in every club including ground for expression in Goldsboro.nc and may do more Democratic volunteer and doing demo tapes making films, publishing impact teens L.A. organization, so people will be seeing each other. jah thank you.
I saw her in 84 in Hartford..my first show EVER...she wanted to battle the "real" Roxanne but the real was afraid..lol..I will never forget..thank you Shante...I mean it from the bottom of my heart...✌
Love you Roxanne. I just shared your videos with my 7yr old, her & I both mesmerized by you. I told her how you are an icon of women, when I was 12 when you came on the beat boxes every girl was so proud of you. So much respect for you, queen.
Chante did a phenomenal job. Yes the movie was the bomb !! I love Roxanne Shante. You so dope I was a fan the first time I heard your voice when I like 12 years old.
Her impact, when she dropped was something special!I'm only a year or 2 younger than Shontae & i STILL don't think the masses understand what she means to hip hop.To freestyle the entire response record to UTFO was stuff of legend. All hail the Queen
Love you Shawny. Still in heavy rotation in all my devices and vehicle's. Gone Girl is one of my all time favorite records. Happt the masses get a chance to feel your power and hear your story. Sway keep keeping it real
Insane!....I remember how we had to search in the UK for UTFO & then real Roxanne...then BANG!Roxanne Shante blow the game wide open...I loved Marley Marl production style from Dimples Dee so I was up for any other Marley beat!!!
*This was my honor to see this. That movie in my opinion came right on time! I've always appreciated Shante's intelligence. What a woman. JERSEY STAND UP!* ✊🏾👸🏾✌🏾🖤💋
Respect the mother of the bridge! Intelligent black queen
I would never forget the day I met her.. OMG her conversation changed my life.. she stopped what she was doing to have a convo with me.. I love this lady
It's been a long time since I felt so proud of our Hip Hop culture. Roxanne Shante deserves every moment of this praise. Respect.
WHY DON'T ANYONE EVER MENTION "BIG MOMMA" BY ROXANNE SHANTE? ONE OF THE BEST DIS TRACKS EVER!!! WRITTEN BY GRANDDADDY I.U
Because Latifah has power now and she would probably sue 😂😂
YES it is!! Raw, kills that shit...
Granddaddy I.U. wrote it and it was really Shanté grasping at straws becuz she couldn’t sell any records. She tried to use the Roxannes Revenge template but it didn’t work.

The movie was good but it left me wanting more...

Legend. None of these women MC's wouldn't exist: Mc Lyte, Queen Latifah, Salt n' Pepa, Lil Kim, Foxy Brown, Oaktown 357, Lady of Rage, Remy Martin, Nicki Minaj... NONE OF THEM! Bow DOWN!
yeah true but Roxanne Shante wouldn't be there without female MCs like ShaRock, Lisa Lee, Lady D, Lady B, The Sequence etc 1979 !!!
Facts!

VeronicaDynamite You just said that they would exist
