I just bought some more powdered milk at Walmart today. I never tried the evaporated dollar tree milk before.
My Mother in Law taught me to do this back when I was young. Best gravy ever.

I keep my matches in a metal tin in my S.H.T.F. bag so I don't have to worry about the container breaking or the matches getting moisture to them.

What a great idea about both the milk and matches.
Tessie, that evaporated milk is “filled” milk which contains soybean and or palm oils, unlike just evaporated milk. I know you have said you avoid some oils. Just thought I’d mention it.

I didn't even realize it until after you made the comment I never even looked at it before most of the milk I have is the carnation i'll use this one for mashed potatoes and things like that it is good to know I do believe though this milk would be more shelf stable for longer because of the oil in it i'm not sure but I will use it in my cooking

I would like to tell everyone that The Dollar Tree also has yarn for crochet or knitting! I’m making all of our gifts this year for Christmas and I’m getting a lot of yarn at The Dollar Tree!! It’s actually pretty good yarn!! They also have crochet hooks and knitting needles and also stitch markers!

Great jars! I'm going to do that with matches. My great grandmother used evaporated milk in her coffee. She would make me coffee milk.😊❤

Hi Tessie. The only time my milk that I canned myself curdled is when I used vinegar to wipe the rims. It seems that if your milk even smells that vinegar it will curdle. After I stopped using it and only used hot water to clean the rims, I have never had another jar of milk curdle. Also, if you can your heavy whipping cream please note that it will never whip up the way the fresh milk would but it does whip back up to a certain degree. You just have to get the milk in the jar extremely cold, not frozen, but very cold for it to do that. One more thing I do is the matches. I also take one of the strikers and put it on the underside of the jar. That way if my jars get moist from the weather or anything I still have a good striker plate underneath the lid.
NOTE: Shake the jars with the home canned milk in it before using to mix the solids back up and also know that canning whole milk does not make it taste like whole milk anymore. It will taste like sweetened evaporated milk. If you want an evaporated tasting milk then use 1% milk.

I saw a video on UA-cam that someone found Ball wooden lids that seal at the DT (not canning lids but for sealing jars for dry goods.) Wow! Hoping to find some! Beautiful jars! Tfs! Blessings!
I read a comment on another UA-camrs channel that said those lids are NOT airtight 🤷♀️. I don’t own any myself so cannot say if that is true or not but I personally wouldn’t want to risk it for long term storage.
I would definitely have to give them a try myself. Maybe a shorter storage time. @@connieb6841

You have to buy matches labeled strike anywhere to get the old kind. The new matches like you bought will not strike except on the strip on the box. Those jars are pretty. I almost bought one but put it back because I'm getting rid of stuff not getting more.

Glass jars are a good idea! I had some matches that got damp in the kitchen, they no longer would strike. I shall do that now at home. I rarely need matches but when I do I really NEED them, lol. Thanks for the great idea. Yes, my mother knew of several families in Appalachia that had fires started by rodents gnawing on the matches as they liked the sulfur in them.

I just made caramel sauce for dipping sliced apples into, for the first time. I used evaporated milk, brown sugar, butter and a few drops of vanilla. It's delicious and much cheaper than buying the caramel in the store.

Hi Tessie, Great ideas. I would caution you however to have a look on the ingredients in that Filled Milk. If it were me I'd get the real thing at your discount store or regular grocery even though it is a few cents more. I get my evaporated milk from Grocery Warehouse for $1.29. Many Blessings

I didn't realize there was something different about filled milk until I read your comment. I'll be using it in cooking the most, and I have other milk that I like better. I won't be buying filled milk again, at least not that brand.

Functional strike anywhere matches don’t exist in America anymore. You have to have the chemical strike strip from the box. There are some that say strike anywhere but they don’t work as well as they used to.
The story is true, also true about the matches not being made where they can strike and literally that easy anymore!
I stock up on the shelf stable milk at dollar tree...plus they have almond milk, shelf stable for the occasions I want milk (lactose intolerant) We also get the DT matches...great deal, and husband has a striker right at the fireplace. we also buy their pasta as it is a 20oz box...meaning we get two meals our of each box for $1.25
I do agree you should keep a couple cans of canned milk or powder milk if you can’t afford the canned milk cause I want to store one time and they’re actually no milk. The truck was running late.

My mom said she used the canned milk as our formula. One can of milk, three cans of water, mix well. Fill the bottles, put in the fridge. I'm 72 years old and it worked for us.

When you canned your own milk, Tessie did you clean the rim of your jars with a paper towel with vinegar on it. I did that and it curdled my milk and I figured out real quick. It was because of the vinegar. the milk was still good. It didn’t spoil so I still use it.
Canning milk is not safe.. check the national center for home food preservation website.

I also think it’s important to have a gas stove. I don’t have a gas stove. I did growing up but where I live everybody has electric stove and it would cost a lot of money to have a gas to put in so what I think it’s important to keep food that you don’t have to cook, it bars, fruit bars, cupcakes, lunch meat you can always eat cold, canned spaghetti I think about more about a storm coming, where I live is close to you so we’ve been lucky but you never know if you’re gonna get a bad storm, bad snowstorm and the lights go out You need food so that you have that you can’t cook and it’s important to make a big pot of coffee before the storm hits because of I hear bad storm coming. I make a big pot of coffee to last me for a few days.

Sorry to leave another comment but I also think it’s important to keep your phone charged. Specially, if you hear a storm coming charge that phone and don’t use it for bull crap just shut it down and that way you’ll have it for emergency.

Yes,just cover with plastic wrap over top then lid add a bay leaf. They work
