I remember mom used to rince bread bags and hang them over wooden spoons to dry, in the dish drain. She would cook double the amount of boiled potatoes because it didn't take much longer. Her trick, she had heavy cast aluminum pots, she brought them to a rolling boil and then shut it off and let them sit on the stove with the burner off until they were done. Mashed potatoes for dinner, potato pancakes for lunch next day. She would store them in the bread bag. She never bought cling wrap, just slit the side of a bread bag to cover bowls. She always turned off the oven 10 to 15 min early and not open the door, and everything cooked just fine. Mom was a marvel. She used the juice from canned fruit to flavor jello, picked up apples off the ground at the neighbors, and made apple sauce and apple butter. If it was free, she could make it work. Amazing woman.
I clean bread bags and dry them . I dry mine over wood spoons .
You were blessed to have had such a mother.
My kids thought I was nuts washing out zippy bags to re-use. Now my daughter is doing the same 😉. Thank you for your money saving tips.
My mother always did this, she was very good about not wasting anything.
You can actually wash them in your washing machine
I do the same thing
@@tbrown2302 I also was zip bags! Done it for years
I do the same except when they have meat in them
I have a long handle spoon that I’ve had for 65years.I use it all the time.
So right! We can't be wasteful in this day and time! God bless you and everyone here.😊❤
GOD Bless Kimberly,
Andrea😊
I use Walmart plastic bags for small bathroom trash bags
I do that too! & I grab extra clear plastic veggie bags in the vegetable section of the grocery store. I use them instead of saran wrap for all kinds of things.
I use eco bags sewn from old tableclothes for shopping, but I have to admit that I sometimes use new waste bags
Use it up, wear it out, make it do or do without. My parents lived by that moto all their life.
I Love That Saying Marybeth And It Is So True 😊,
GOD Bless,
Andrea
We must be cousins my mom said the same thing. We carefully unwrapped our presents to line our dresser drawers. Remove all buttons put them in the button jar. Those were the days.😊
You’re right! They don’t make things like they used to. We moved on to the new things and guess what? Now we’re going back to that old thing. 🤦🏽♀️
You Are Right Tessie. Things Made Today Don't Last. I Try To Buy Second Hand As Much As Possible-- The Quality Is So Much Better. We Always Re-Purpose Things Too. Thanks For All Of Your Tips!
Great Video-- Thanks Tessie.
Blessings, Andrea
Whenever I can I look around and use what I have for everything. It's amazing how homeschooling can be done without cost and have it be meaningful.
I just cooked Couscous which is a grain with flavoring that was in a cardboard box dated 2018 and I am still hear to talked about it, I figured the flavor maybe off but it was fine very tasty.💕💕
Couscous is actually pasta so it keeps a long time.
Always great ideas. My parents were children during the depression. Both of their parents were very lucky as they had jobs. My mom did fairly well-she was little-but it impacted my father’s childhood. I can remember my dad and father in laws basement had nails, screws, nuts & bolts, etc, stored in baby jars with the lids attached to a sheet of wood.
Tessie,we've been enjoying a channel called way point survival. He shows items that a hobo might use! Like a tall baked bean can and a tuna can can be used on an outdoor fire to cook food in. Lots of good ideas to reuse things.
I will check it out
I actually subscribe to his channel. I started watching him about a year ago. And I bought a can opener and some of the wire bracket stuff to make the rocket stove he has on the channel. It works great! I also like his Crisco stove! I like the rocket stove better though due to you can always find twigs!
Harvested more green peppers tonight. Dug my stevia up to bring in for the winter. Need to harvest my parsley tomorrow.
Couldn’t agree more with these thoughts. We ALL need to be careful nowdays❤
I am feeling the same way about not wanting to waste anything. You are right about there being some good coming along with our economy, I am happy to see a less disposable way of life. They say every dark cloud has a silver lining and I suppose that is true. Have a cozy evening.❤
Well said, Tessie; I absolutely agree! My husband and I were discussing this topic last night. We're using things up, repurposing, and reusing things (like food storage bags) as much as possible. There are still some herbs I can harvest and either dry or freeze before the frost--doing my best to make every bit count. I so appreciate your perspective about how something good-people being less wasteful-can come out of these challenging times. Have a blessed evening! 😊
Great advice Tessie! Always use what you have!
I just love your content! I try to also be a "brain break" for people with our content. Your videos are always so pleasant, useful, and authentic. Thanks for being my "brain break!"
My Mom would use bread wrappers as freezer bags, not for long term, but I can remember her freezing ground beef in them.
Tessie agree things aren't the same anymore. Hamburger soup is good, you could even use your tomatoes out in the garden in it yum😋no waste here can't afford to waste anything.🥰
I am definitely less wasteful. Today I froze extra food given to me. I organized my pantry where we could find stuff. I now can easily see what I need, and what was overpurchased. I am trying to regrow Romaine lettuce.
Tessie,
I often wonder why you don't put a screen door on the kitchen door. How nice I'm sure it would be to get the fresh air in when it's cool without worrying about insects flying in. Is that something you've considered?
Good advice we should all be following!
I have a LEM (Food saver style) machine. I keep bags from other items that can be washed. I place the meat in those bags and vacuum seal them. Then I place that bag into a Food Saver bag, vacuum seal it then place it in the freezer. That way I can still wash and reuse the Food Saver bag.
Always love watching you in the kitchen. Kitchen, the heart of the home. I have ny parents blender that I grew up with. I'm 65 and this thing is a beast. It's strong and heavy. I mean heavy. I just look at it and I remember. Take care Tessie. ❤
Hello Joanne 😊,
Good To See You My Friend!

@pr9764 Yes, a very comforting thought. Thank you Andrea and God bless.
Who Loves Tessie Time :-)
I do 💞
Always ❤
Of course. ❤
Hi Tessie! I have one of my mom's spoons from when I was a kid too! I love hamburger soup! I have been repurposing things here in our home. Good video Tessie!
Very hopeful and positive message!
Plastic bags have been banned in Massachusetts at all of the stores, so I save any plastic bags food comes in and use those for things like chicken bones and waste that I don’t want to throw in my trash bin or out in the compost pile. For storing food in the refrigerator, I use covered glass Pyrex dishes. They have glass bottoms and glass tops and I have found all of them at the thrift shop. That eliminates using plastic storage containers, plastic wrap, aluminum foil, etc. I have all different sizes and they look nice, plus I can see what is in them, plus they are easy to clean. You could also use covered casserole dishes to store leftovers in the refrigerator. I started using them along time ago to help the planet, but now they also help my budget, and don’t introduce unnecessary plastic into my food. The square and rectangular ones were very popular during the 1950s because you could stack them, but those are very hard to find now, so I just get the glass ones that are round.
Tessie, I make use of everything I reuse plastic bags all the time except when meat was stored in them I like my bagels too peanut butter is a good healthy substitute :-) Love you my Sister :-) God Bless You and Ken :-)
Great advice. Any raw food stored in it including eggs is considered contaminated. Fish, beef, chicken, greasy foods. I’m glad she doesn’t do that either.
Good Morning Tessie, Sisters, Brothers, and Friends, Wish you all a wonderful blessed Wednesday filled with Gods Joy and Happiness :-) Remember to pray for one another and for all around the world :-) God Blessed You ! Love you all :-) Keep Smiling be safe :-)
I love it. I make a what I call 'refrigerator' soup or stew by using up any left overs. It never tastes the same and is always good. I don't throw out bread either, it becomes bread crumbs or croutons, I've even taken sesame bread sticks and turned them into breadcrumbs. I try not to waste anything. There's so many ways to save. Just like anything that's worthwhile it takes practice and sometimes thinking outside the box, but as you know a good skill is worth the practice. Blessings to you and yours❤
I believe from what I have learned, the average produces 11lbs of trash in a week. Thank you for this video Tessie. Very appreciated.
I bought my potato masher from a yard sale about 15 years ago and the lady said she got it as a wedding gift back in the 60s. It’s so sturdy I imagine it will last forever. I’m always on the lookout for older kitchen items and small appliances.
I have been dehydrating my herbs, peppers and tomatoes
Hello Tessie, Your looking good and healthy lately.
Totally agree with you Tessie!
Have a great night!!
I agree. I really hate to be wasteful.
Tessie I am coverting my plastic storage to glass.
Omg Tessie!
I have the same spoon, bought it from a thrift store ❤
I remember learning this amish song in school, When true simplicity is gained, to bow, and to bend we shan't be ashamed, to turn, turn will be our delight till by turning, turning, round round right. 🎻I recognized the song you were playing in the first part of this video. We freeze leftovers and its good. Fruit is frozen too.
So true thank you Tessie
I got extra food today. I froze it for a rainy day, labeled.
Great job as always from our quilted homestead!!!
My tomatoes are long gone for the year.
Wonderful advice I reuse plastic bags as well I hardly ever throw anything out unless it’s no good always use and reuse whatever it is for as long as you can have a fantastic day blessings ❤️❤️❤️❤️
Love to see you Tessie!
Thanks for this video Tessie. Your home looks so beautiful and cozy. We try hard not to waste anything too. Saves money for sure. Have a blessed day Friend
As they said many decades ago, checking if food is fresh, use your nose.
We just took everything out of our deep freezer, which is full. We purchased some heavy-duty clear plastic containers to have it organized. We labeled each container plus drew a "map" of what is on each layer. It is so much easier to work with now. I can take two weeks' worth of food out at a time to place in the refrigerator freezer now. You're right...can't wait anything!
I love Tessie time! 💕🌻🥰
I have that spoon too! It was my mom's. I use it all the time!!!

Hi Tessie. Great video ❤❤
❤thank you so much for your advice. I have stepped up my prepping and purchased several of the books you recommend. We are getting it done, as we can afford it. I recommend you to everyone I can ❤❤❤
What an encouraging message!
Thank you, Tessie! 🤎🤎🤎
It difficult sometimes with families. One week they love something. Next week they don't. 😢
my great grandkids are like that!
Wow, Tessie! I had 'slotted spoon' envy when I saw your Mom's! Best slotted spoon I've ever seen. I'm super jealous. You are absolutely right - they do NOT make things the way they used to. Loved your choice of music in this video, as well. Many blessings from Canada, as always.
Wonderful ideas great practical advice, thanks!❤😊
I buy old things to use. They were better made years ago. I never buy new things if I can avoid it.
Your so right Tessie. It's a throw away world! ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Hi Tessie! That turkey is fine! I have to clean my freezer and I'm sure I'll unearth some older, but I'll use it for something 🤗
Thank you for sharing inspiration with us. :o)

Happy Tuesday To You Too,

Good morning pretty lady ♥It is interesting. I see our neighbors garbage and it is always overfilled each week and I wonder what she has that fills it up so much! Every week our garbage is the same. One kitchen garbage bag and occasionally two! We have so little waste due to recycling and whole cooking! We recycle all our cardboard boxes and save all the glass jars. I use the glass jars to repackage dry goods unless I cant get the smell out lol! In that case the go out in hubbies shop to use for screws and such!
Your bracelet is going out in the mail today let me know when you get it
@@HomesteadTessie I am so excited! Thank you so much!
You need just new lids for the jars to get rid of the smell
@@Stoffmonster467 There are glass jars from the grocery with things like pickles, garlic and stuff like that. When I can't remove the smell hubby uses them in the shop/garage for screws and things!
@@rachaelsupadventures I'm always canning in these, everybody here does it. New lids is the secret.
Oh and I have utensils from my grandmother I use everyday and I'm 70 years young😊
I like making soup
You are right, everything is made throw away. I liked it much better when things lasted. That's why I buy thi gs fro. thrift store and used to auctions and flea markets. Gladto know I'm not the only one who washes and re-uses bags, use grocery. ags for other small trash cans, saves glass jars, cartons etc. We are all just trying to make it. Thank you for sharing more ideas and everyone else does also. you looked very pretty today. ❤❤❤❤😊😊😊
Meat expiration doesn’t matter if they have been frozen the whole time.
I have lemon water too :-)
Good to cycle through food!
Hello from Michigan
Hi Tessie. You are wearing my skirt. ha ha. I have one just like it and I still wear it and I’ve had it a long time. I like to take care of my things and keep things forever. @@pr9764 good morning Andrea, I hope you have a wonderful day today my friend 😊🌻
Good comes from every situation, it is good these times are teaching to not be so wasteful.
Need to tighten our belts
My heart breaks for family and friends in N Carolina and eastern TN who had huge pantries full of home canned, home dehydrated, and home freeze dried food who lost everything last week in Hurricane Helena. All that hard work gone in the flooding. 😥
We use stainless steel straws to drink water, tea, citrus water 🙂 Staying hydrated in fall and winter is something some people never think about.
More resursful
Where did you get your dehydrator that looks like the size I could use
amzn.to/3Y1ql3E
Still have cherry tomatoes until probably November here
Love your outfit.
I look at this economy as a blessing in so many ways. Consumerism before COVID had gotten totally out of control. We need to use less and make use of what we already have. Nobody likes the high prices, but I think inflation is a global issues from what I hear from friends in Europe. Those if us who grow gardens, preserve food, bargain shop, and make meals from scratch are just fine. Wanting name brands and living beyond our means has put many families in a world of hurt.
Well said. I agree with you totally.
Hi Tessie
Hi Marybeth happy Tuesday ❤

Yes never waste. It all cost to much. Lord bless. 😊
Mb here I live hamburger soup
There is no waste if you narrow your diet down to:
BEEF, BACON, BUTTER and EGGS. 👍🏼
Proper Human Diet (PHD)
What temperature and how much time is required to dehydrate your basil?
Ninety five degrees for two hours
Hey you know those box milks? Well we use alot of that and I started pulling the spout out of the box before I throw it away. I'm not sure what I'm gonna do with them yet but if anybody got any ideas I'm all ears😀
You're ground turkey may not be as tasty and may not have quite the nutritional value but it's okay.
