Love to watch tarp set ups........Dave you made it realy simple with trucker hitches........that is one knot I can always tie. Very well done and simplified, especially on the hammock part. So I actually did a 4x6 tarp into a hammock and did it right before watching this on my own.....nice. thank you.
Dave, you are one of the coolest people on UA-cam. I, and probably others, asked for these tarp videos and you made them. Just like that. I can't thank you enough for taking the time to listen to your viewers and make great, informative videos. Thanks man! God bless.
Thank you Dave for all you do for us folks that want to learn the old ways people say buy a tent or a back tent that's fine if they can afford them but a lot of us can't weather were on a fix income or other reasons again thank you for the time that you put into this videos SIR
Thanks David....love the second setup. I love the truckers loop. I recently was turned on to the automatic truckers loop where you drop your line through the loop and then run it through a 2nd time. Now when you pull to tighten it stays tight while you tie in your slip knot. Kind of like a prusik but with just two wraps....the second wrap locks the the line. To undo it just drop the line back through the loop and give it a tug....the whole thing falls apart.
Nice video, I love the backdrop, what a great office to work in. Great tarp setup and I think these are the best knot setups I've seen for something like this. I'll be using these next time I'm grabbing some dirt time. Thanks Dave.
Agreed - a decent axe/hawk should be able to handle basic bushcraft tasks (tent stakes, etc). You just want to stay away from hammering large rocks, as this could crack the eye of the head. Great vid Dave!
My absolute favorite part about Dave is the fact that he loves snakes. I, like Dave, wouldn't kill a snake (venomous or otherwise) if I didn't absolutely have to. Warms my heart, Dave you are my hero.
Way to keep refining the lessons! Don't forget to take the time to work on stuff that's interesting to you, or to chill out. Doesn't get much better than when you're just doing your thing and we happen to be along. Get some Dave time! Thanks for all you do for US.
another great video dave. i been using a variation of those knots for years, self tightening is great i used it alot in packing/loading/store freight and it's a great way to tie down a net i had over the freight on a pallet or loaded on a truck :-)
Great video! I'm not use to setting up tarps but considering a tark is going to be my shelter next weekend for two nights I'm gonna have to learn FAST!
Thanks for pointing that out Dave. I am a side sleeper and avoide hammocks for that reason. Know that I know a double should work for me I think I will give that a try.
Dave, Using rope to tie up a Hammock will damage the tree, as evidence shows at 11:08. Use tree huggers, (a piece of webbing). It will even the load so there is no scaring. I would also use a ridge line under the fly. That way if it snows the tarp will not be on top of you.
Thanks for the options you showed Dave. I have yet to find my personal space. I live in San Diego and hard to find a place but when I do I want to try some of the methods you showed here.
I sure do like the way you put the tarp down low enough to cover a fella up from a rain. I also like the way your tied out both the hammock and the tarp.
Keeping it simple. End of story. Thanks for your insight. Run cordage through a leather washer to prevent rain from running down lines or tie a string around cordage, easy fix.
Yeah, I screwed up the left knee and had my hip repaired and because i didn't want to give up getting out I went out and purchased a good hammock to replace the old one since i highly doubt getting down on hands and knees to crawl into a tent or tarp shelter will be good because I don't want to get down and not be able to drag my ass back up, especially if I am out alone. I hope you get better soon cdlpx.
Hi all. Dave has done a video on knots. I see there are more than a few asking about it. Simply type "camp knots" in the search bar on the Pathfinder Channel. It will be the only video that comes up. Hope this helps.
i ve seen ppl put a piece of rope around a tree and hang the pack from it with a carabiner. what i tend to do is just put the raincover over the pack and lay it upside down (so with the raincover towards the ground) under my tarp, right next to the hammock. this also gives you a platform to put gear on within arms reach.
Wow.. I really wanna get out and hang in my hammock now. I always hang my tarp in an A frame though.. not the diamond. It seems to work well for me, Thanks for the great video Dave.
I can tell you have a lot of experience at doing this. The only thing I would ask is that when you are demonstrating how to tie the knots, that you slow down. I'm sure you can do them in your sleep, but some of us need to see it a lot slower for it to sink in. Thanks for showing us what you have learned.
Ok...i should have waited till the end of the video to ask my question...LOL... you answered it at the 10 minute mark. the knos and ropes are acting as driplines...got it. thanks man.
I have a Hennessy Hammock and I am very happy with it, It costs more than the setup Dave has but is complete, hammock, rainfly, net, tree straps, and tie outs. I do like some of the knots Dave uses better than the ones they use so I am looking forward to trying them out. Thanks for the great tips as always Dave! Something off subject Dave, have you ever made waxed canvas items? Would like too see your method if you have, love your vids and reviews, stay real brother!
Dave i know its unrelated to this video but my wife bought a box of camping stuff at a yard sale and there were two small sterno so i was going to use the can for a alcohol stove so i was playing with the chafing fuel it makes a grate starter for firesteel
thanks so much for this video extremely helpful. I was wondering about how you said the rope you are using to attach your hammock to the tree, does this loosen over time? so would you have to get up and keep retightening the rope every couple of hours?
you have some awesome tutorials, many thanks for all the great information! Quick question about the first knot for the hammock hook: if you have the kind of friends I grew up with, that quick release tag would just be too irresistible to give a good yank on for whoever was unlucky enough to fall asleep first....if the weight of the hammock hook is already on there, could it still be quick released if someone tugged hard enough, or would the weight of the hammock keep it tied?
Dave, Do you think a bigger tarp would help in overhead protection? Like a screen behind to protect from the wind? What do you think of building a small fire to add heat into the shelter? I am looking forward in camping this year with my hammock system, so I am getting some suggestions. Thanks for all your videos and suggestions. By the way, what are the dimednsions of the haversack? Thanks, your friend, Jeffrey
With using such low breaking strength cord to hang your hammock, you should try and get the angle the rope makes with the horizontal close to 30 degrees. This will reduce the force on the ropes to your body weight. Switching to a low stretch cord or webbing like polyester would be much better too. If your going to carry a special cord to hang the hammock, might as well use webbing as it damages the tree bark less.
dave a big fan and that tarp would definetly be handy in this weather. and i dont live that far from you i live in central pa about 5 to 7 hours from you
Quick question: what would you do with a heavy backpack, to keep it off the ground and out of the rain, with your hammock setup? Great video, Dave! Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
Dave, ever think of re doing the versa shelter? I thought it was your simplest, yet most effective, set-ups to date and it would tie into the frontier/longhunter style very well.
The slip knot for the hammock attachment is a great alternative. Since I started hammock camping with the boy scouts in the past year, I found one that might help also, and seems to work well, it's called a Siberian Hitch. Let me know how it works for you.
Hey Dave, have you ever considered making a video on survival air rifles? I love the near infinite ammo capacity of pellet guns, especially in a longterm survival situation.
First your videos are a life lesson in any of them been watching you for yrs. Great vids. I have a question. I bought a Kelty Noah's 16x16 tarp thinking it would be good for the extra length. I was very wrong it is waaaay too big for even my double Eno hammock. What tarp do you use for that hammock??
Gee, I'm jealous watching these videos :( Im still down doing physical therapy and wearing a knee brace after a right hip repair sustained in a car accident and haven't been able to get out with my hammock and tarp, but when I do... I am going to try out that diamond! Once again, another great video, and at least if I can't get out there, I can watch you do it :)
absolutely love it!!!! Now can you do a review of the hammock? Maybe off the poncho and hammock as a kit on your website????? Please???? nevr been much for hammocks but this set up looks like it wouldn't take up much room in my pack and actually look comfortable.
Hey Dave, will the pathfinder tarp cover the Treklite double hammock? Or will I need to go larger? I love your wealth of great information! Thanks for your efforts!
Dave, for attaching to the tree you might want to think about trying some webbing instead of rope, its lighter in weight, and would take up less room in your bag, and it won't damage the tree.
Thanks for all the time you take to make these awsome videos with all this knowledge. Your store will be the first place I go for my survival needs.
Old videos still providing useful tips. Thank you.
Love to watch tarp set ups........Dave you made it realy simple with trucker hitches........that is one knot I can always tie. Very well done and simplified, especially on the hammock part. Love the idea of holes in the pegs. So simple and yet very much the practical idea of the setup. Many thanks for the ideas.
This is the perfect hammock hanger knot, bar none. For this alone, it's worth its weight in gold. but the rest of the video also rocks. Tyvm.
Dave, you are one of the coolest people on UA-cam. I, and probably others, asked for these tarp videos and you made them. Just like that. I can't thank you enough for taking the time to listen to your viewers and make great, informative videos. Thanks man! God bless.

Thanks for the info, Dave. I am new to hammock camping, so this was just what the Dr. ordered. God bless you, your family, and your business. John
I have learned so much watching your vids Dave. Thank you man. The info you give is going to save lives. And your products look great.
Thanks David....love the second setup. I love the truckers loop. I recently was turned on to the automatic truckers loop where you drop your line through the loop and then run it through a 2nd time. good video - i learnt something with the knots. and liked the 2nd set up
thanks

My absolute favorite part about Dave is the fact that he loves snakes. I, like Dave, wouldn't kill a snake (venomous or otherwise) if I didn't absolutely have to. Warms my heart, Dave you are my hero.
Dave I want say, you are truely the best, excellent instructional video.
Nice and simple way of putting up yuor hammock and tarp. I will start using them once I get the opportunity. Thanks!!
Thanks Dave. You helped me streamline my hammock setup. Can't wait to get out in the woods!

were can you get the tarp and the hammock you were using and whats the price range for it, great video by the way
looks comfy
just what I said a couple hours before you. Great minds think alike.
I really like that shirt/jacket you are wearing. What brand? Where did that come from? It looks pretty tough.
Like, like, like. Great stuff...
Another great video. But will that tarp leak if you rib against it when it's wet like some tents do?
i have seen a second small home made stile hammock hanging beneath the main hammock for holding gear.
awesome! thanks
