These type vids are the bread and butter of the pathfinder school. Love it.
You had a past video on cold weather hammocking. I took away a lot of great information from that video. Such as using reflex, reflective ductwork insulation. I camped out in my hammock in a -0 winter evening up here in the mountains of Vermont. I was toasty all night. Thanks so much Dave. Cant wait to try this traditional style this hunting season!

Another way to combat sliding around in a hammock is to run a bead of hot glue onnthe bottome of the matt your using. Once it dries you'll have a non slip matt. I do this on the bottom of the ruggs in my house to stop them from sliding across the hardwood floor.
Goin back to catch up on some of your older videos Dave, and still great content brother! I really like the traditional hammock with the queen size wool blanket!
Very good information Dave. That is a fantastic method for improvising an under quilt. I still like having a browse mattress and dropping the hammock down to contact for cold weather but this looks like a great method to use for cool nights when it isn't necessary to construct a browse mattress. Saves some work for sure. Early Fall is coming..great time to test it out:)

I've done a bit of low temp hammock camping in cold weather. I enjoyed seeing you get excited when you first started doing videos with hammocks. I'm not stuck on a traditional path, so I use a foam exercise mat as my insulator. I may at some point get an under quilt, but I've been warm in rather low temps without one.
I would suggest closing up the gaps at each end when you pin it all together. Don't let the air move between the blanket and the hammock from end to end.
Max Sinklair snug pack cocoon. It's like 60-70 bucks but it's gold. It's bulky, but works great. not too heavy, I strap it to the bottom of my pack. No need for a sleeping bag at all.

Tnx for sharing, i live in Tent country (hardly ever see hammocks used), and didn't even know there were sound options to use them in colder weather. So it's nice to know i can use a wool blanket to accomplish this quilt functionality you recently showed in the light weight camping system, which i hadn't seen before either. Good to have options, and to know how and when to use them. :)
I've often wondered if a wool blanket would work as a hammock under quilt but could never figure out how to attach it without extensive modification. Never even knew of blanket pens, thanks for the info.

I'm not so worried about doing a traditional style but I do like the idea of using something I'm already bringing along to sleep warmer than would otherwise. I'm a boy scout leader and we are planning a winter camping trip and this might help keep me warm.
This is something I can use right now. Thank you very much for teaching me how to use gear I already have more efficiently.

Clothespins are a good aid in many ocasions. We can carry a few with our gear or make some from a split small branch. I allways carry some 6 or 10 clothespins with my stuff.
Great advice...I've always preferred hammocks over the ground n any temp.
Canvas tarps, canvas hammocks and multiple wool blankets are fine if you have a means of conveyance.... because they are heavy and bulky.
I much prefer my Snugpak jungle hammock for camping. It's super lightweight and packs into the size of a soda can. For the chilly evenings, I use the Snugpak hammock cocoon. It's also pretty light and packs to the size of a football..... and it's toasty warm. With just the cocoon, I'm good to about 25°F. I also have a Snugpak jungle blanket that I wrap up in before getting into the hammock....if it's colder than 25°F. With this combination I'm good to about 0°F.
I tent camp only when I cannot hang a hammock.... hammock camping is the only way to go...IMO.
Great video Dave! Just had an overnighter last weekend in my hammock! Got down to mid 50's and used wool blanket wrapped around me, had to take it off I got so hot! I'll hopefully see you at Indy on the 8th after my foraging and medicine making course! It's over at 4 hope you're still there when I get there!!!

Keep up the good videos. Very informative. I have camped in hammocks many times. Not below 50 degrees though. My favorite style of camping in light weight low hassle style.

A big thing I've seen help for me is to have a two-layer hammock if I'm in a semi-permanent setting, where there's a second layer hanging beneath me to keep an air pocket against my back while I sleep like you did with the wool blanket. It may be difficult and not all too practical for moving around a lot, but it does keep me warm.
I don't understand- it's just an air pocket? No leaves or anything? I saw an EDC Hammock by UK hammocks that might work well for that (carrying two- each of them pocket-sized).
2QZQ makes an underquilt cover of very light nylon that slings under your underquilt to keep it clean even if there's backsplash from the ground. And it adds some warmth. It might work as you say to add a bit under a single layer hammock.

I have done this several times while camping. Eat with butter/margarine/even olive oil so it is not so dry. Sure you can coil around a stick, but this is so much better.

Thanks for doing this video Dave, I am working on setting up a frame I can use in the wall tent for a hammock and the idea of the blankets should work well.
the book, "the Ultimate Hang" is a great resource for hammock camping. I just started hammock camping this summer after watching YT vid's by a popular hanging guy last fall and winter. I'll never sleep on the ground again. ! if at all possible. with the right set up winter camping will be enjoyable. (I'm not quite ready for that yet. 60 is about the lowest my set up can go right now. wonderful series here.
the last setup is a bomber... i use polyester mat, light sleeping bag and wool blanket. i always just put the blanket insidethe hammock just like the mat but it is really difficult to keep blanket in place. but with that under and over setup, oh boy...

I always liked the thought of using a hammock in warm weather .. I just can't get comfortable enough to sleep all night in one... but when the temps drop I stay on the ground too hard to stay warm when you have that cold air underneath

All the time IV used wool IV never been able to stay warm in cold temps except with loose layers if I wrap up tight boom all insulation is gone just my findings I think it's all depends on if your can take cold temps and are a warm sleeper I'm not a warm sleeper and it just don't work for me 1 layer now 2 yup I'm good in the 40s j.m.o. take care brother

10* Good vid. I think about using Queen or King and make a "C" fold, and put that inside the hammock and you have double woolen blanket quilting. If you want to have an underquilting, then take the bottom fold of the "C" put across the hammock. Wrap under and over the hammock an double fold the upper fold of the "C" and all this can be pinned/velcroed, even super magnetics (instead of zipperl. All of these are good options.
That's great! I like the double under but I'd want to flip it inside out so I had two layers inside, pinning the bottom layer at center side & folding the other half over me. I'd want all that wool up close tight on me in the cold. I don't know if that's to difficult though? Trust the experienced man. :)
OK just a thought. I get it that people shop many stuff from Amazon and ebay . Usually the shop the stuff that is not easy to find in their local area but..... pins? Come on people , I'm pretty sure you can find most of the stuff you need in your local market. It's just a suggestion, support your local dealers. that is called a Columbian style hammock..i sleep in one every night... gave up bed sleeping... even had a swiss tempurpedic bed...... Brazilian hammocks are the ones that are fishnet roped. they are still super comfy but meant for hot days

Why not just use a modern day sleeping bag? There are several different weights and temp ratings.

Stephen Rigby it would, but it depends on how cold it is out. If the temp is getting down to the point where a couple of wool blankets are not enough, a hammock and tarp camp might not be the best option.

It's such a bummer I can't wear wool. Scratches the hell out of me. Even Marino Wool feels like I'm wearing a Brillo pad.

Iff your backpacking then traditional canvas and wool is out the window, far too heavy and bulky for a Bergen over distance, a Thermarest in a nylon hammock is lightweight and very warm and not bulky or heavy, common sense prevails, AND MY PATHFINDER ALCOHOL STOVE STILL DOESN'T BLOOM VERY WELL,...

Dave, I love the idea of hammocks, and I've calmed that way, based on your videos (thank you), but I cannot sleep on my back, due to apnea type issues. I'm a stomach and side sleeper. Mostly stomach. Got any tips or suggestions?
Camped, not calmed.
you can still sleep mostly on your side in a hammock, it just requires a little careful maneuvering to get that way in the hammock. But I'm like you, I'm only a side sleeper and hammocks work great for me.
Bridge hammocks are great for stomachs and side sleeping. Not as traditional is this canvas hammock, but a much flatter lay than even a modern day gathered end style camping hammock. Jacks R Better and Warbonnet both have great bridge hammocks.
Why do you suffer from Sleep apnea. Are you obese?
I've looked at the Warbonnet stuff. Nothing is cheap if you have special needs, I guess. Thanks, though I was looking for a more traditional approach. Someone asked me, "Did you try to sleep sideways in your hammock?" And I was like, "no." So, maybe that's the answer.
No traditional settings in cold/cool weather used hammocks.

Hammocks were not used in cool climates it doesn't make sense
Also you must sleep hot a thin wool blanket won't keep the average person warm in 20-30s especially in a hammock.
It doesn't make sense if you don't think outside the box, but Conduction and Convection are both heat loss mechanisms and whether you are Ion the ground or off the ground you must battle at least one. Being off the ground has many advantages in colder weather convection is easier to control that conduction with less energy spend to do so, A wool blanket is much easier as shown than making a bed of bows 4: thick on the ground for example. Just because we don't find it in writing does not mean it never happened and our own evolution of outdoor practices comes from thinking outside the box.
wildernessoutfitters I am all for outside the box thinking but a single wool blanket isn't going to do much when it hits 30 degrees. But everyone is free to try it and see how it works.
