This set of wooden planter boxes is a fairly easy woodworking project that you can make in a single day. These geometric succulent planters are also something you could batch out to sell at a craft fair. Each set of planters is made from a single 3x3 wood turning block (make sure to get one at least 12”-14” long). The planter liners are inexpensive steel condiment / sauce cups you can get on Amazon (link below). Alternatively, you can 3D print planter liners if you have a 3D printer (email me for the .STL file).
The design of the geometric planters focuses on the continuous grain through all three planters, which is the result of cutting all the planters from a single piece of wood (I used maple and walnut). I painted the ends with spray paint, which really highlights the faceted geometric shapes of the planters.

I’m digging the white and walnut combo!!! Great job mike
Thanks brother!
I made a set for myself based on your design, but with different geometries. It looks great, loved your idea of painting specific sides to give that look.
One thing I did different was the sanding. I just painted first and then sanded the edges with the orbital sander so I got really sharp transactions between wood and paint.
Wallnut so beautiful
Love your shoulder wrap LOL--nice planters, too.
Thanks Karen! 😀🐈
i'm a big succulent nerd. u definitely want a drain hole for succulents or they will slowly rot from overwatering. if you are dead set against a drain hole, just water SUPER lightly and carefully.
the planters are really cool, and I like your cat scarf!
Such a great gift idea, thanks.
Thanks! Glad you like it 😊
This is a GREAT small project for gifts. Totally gonna make these. I think it would look cool with some metallic paints.
Thanks Craig! Yes, this is a great one to batch out. I only made 3 but it would have been easy to scale up to make more.
Love the white ones, totally suits my aesthetic. But the colour combos are endless
Thanks Jesse!
That maple one is my favorite! Love how you left the figured ends unpainted. That’s really cool to be able to 3D print some liners as well.
Thanks Bruce! Have you taken the plunge with a 3D printer yet?
@@modustrial I haven't. I have been watching from afar. I'm hoping to dive into some CNC routing soon though.
Highly recommend it! Jonny just got the same one I have...for about $300, it's a steal!
This is BRILLIANT!!8 the contrast between the wood and the colors is awsome and the shape is genius! RESPECT for this awsome idea!
Thanks for the kind words!!
@@modustrial to be fair, it wasn't really your idea that was being complimented.
Do you expect me to write out the full explanation that the I already gave in the video every time someone says something nice about the video? I think what is said in the video is pretty clear, and the video description links to the company that originally made the planters I re-created.
I've been wanting to make some of these for awhile. Thanks for the video! Nice work man.
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it!
Thanks for the video! These turned out great! I used 3.5” width cherry and maple and I just bought 3” walnut. I stained the cherry and prefer that one. I put some felt pads at the bottom for an added nice touch. FYI for new people you really need to clamp down the wood on the drill press. My test piece started shaking and moving a bit.
Great planters Mike! The simplest projects are always my favourite!
Thanks brother! This was a fun one.
Been excited for this vid! Well done!
Thanks brother!
Just in time for some Summer Projects with my daughters!!!
This would definitely be a fun one to make with them! 👍👍
- BEAUTIFULLY distinctive & classy yet feels "do-able" to me. Thanx 4 sharing.
thanks uncle, you teach a simple art, I will make it for my wife office, thanks
Hey Mike! Very nice - thanks for showing us the how to on them!
Watching you do these creative projects has inspired me. I live in a small apartment in Vancouver Canada and did a built in bar on my balcony, and am in the midst of doing a built in work area that gives me access to storage from the balcony as well. Thanks for the inspiration to get creative and build instead of always buying!
Thanks for the kind words Paul! That's awesome you've got a little shop setup going! Tag me on Instagram when you share pics of your creations...I'd love to see them!
Great video and they look fantastic. I will definitely be trying these out. Thanks for the inspiration.
Thanks much! Inspiration is the goal!
A big thank you for a simple project that I can do with my wife to include her in my woodworking.
Thanks Curt! Have fun making this one! 😀
Отличная идея, качественное и приятное видео
Great project. Love them.
Really nice project. I definitely liked the dark wood with the white edges the best. I didn't care for the yellow edges but that's just personal preference.
Pretty beautiful job, dude! Fantastic idea! 😃
Thanks man!
I. Love. These!
Thank you for reverse engineering these. I am an avid plant lover and have some succulents that I need to make containers for. I also just joined a woodworking shop oh, so this is most Timely. Again thank you❤
Thanks Dee! Congrats on starting a really fun hobby!
Looks great!
Thanks brother!
Very cool project and congratulations on being on the cover of Popular Woodworking!
Thanks Pete!
Thanks for posting this ! It looks very easy and will be trying it 😉
Thanks!
@@modustrial You're welcome !
G'day knackers! Nice job ♥️
Thanks Shane!
🙌🏻 FINALLY! Lol... LOVE them. they're so easy to make yet they make a room come together, imho. I actually screenshot one of your previous videos to "reverse engineer" them as well. They're so beautiful. Thanks for sharing. Mike!
P.S - I'll gladly take one for the team and remove the darker walnut version off your hands 😂. Or maybe you can do a simple giveaway..... for my bday that's coming up next month 🤣
Thanks Janie! The requests were heard, albeit slowly 😀
The Walnut will definitely lighten up over time so lacquer version may suit your tastes soon enough.
Ah, ok, thats good to know. Thanks!
It would be cool if there was some acrilic transparent dowels pieces inserted between parts of planters to keep them on same distance from each other and for easier maneuvering. But nice little prroject, love geometric shapes.
Thanks Igor! The acrylic would be a really cool variation on this design.
I like it!
Thanks much! 😁
Looks cool
Thanks!
Awesome work Mike! 😃👍🏻👊🏻
Thanks Fred! 👊
@modern craftsman wow, you really went nuts on this....I'm an IP attorney and am not trying to claim anyone else's design as my own. I was very upfront in the video that the original planter design wasn't mine. one comment would have sufficed..... Going through and spamming every comment was not necessary. I do appreciate you trying to protect IP, but there was a bit of misdirected hostility here.
@modern craftsman I normally don't engage spammy comments, but I think the community here should see this conversation. First, I pride myself in my own designs, so the last thing I would want to do was take credit for one I don't believe is my own. The video description clearly links to revolution and says they are the designer of the planter I based mine off. I did exactly what you suggest earlier in the day before I even saw your comments, which UA-cam rightly filtered out as spam. Based on that alone your point is without merit. But to top that off, I actually held off doing this project which was requested by many of my subscribers, until revolution no longer was selling these planters, so there could be no accusations that I'm somehow hurting their sales. What's more revolution liked my post on Instagram and subsequently followed me. If they are cool with what I'm doing here, which is sharing a process to create a really cool design with the community, then you need to be to.
Cool projekt
Thanks Fredrik!
Just FYI 3D printed parts usually aren't water tight, especially in PLA. I'd recommend a post process of either spraying them with several thick coats of a waterproof finish, or dipping them/get a thin layer of epoxy around at least the inside edge.
Good to know! I tested the liners by filling them with water and letting them sit for a few hours. Didn't see any leakage so figured they would do the job.
I didn't know you're based in Chicago. I work a few blocks away from the [Sears] Tower, and watch your vids during lunch.
Small world! My office for the day job is accross the street from you!
Super.............👍👍😉
Thanks Roland!
awesome work, and awesome saw, just have to be careful not tonthe the aluminum miter bar
Thanks Shaun! And I agree...have learned the hard way with the miter sled 🤣
8.20 ur cat is too cute!!! LOL!
Karma says thanks! 😸 And I agree :)
very nice 👍. love the cat
Thanks! (From me and Karma 😸)
I don't talk to much!..................very nice! Bravo!
Thanks!
Thanks for the awesome video! But Who make the miter square you used to trace the lines around the wood?
Great video as always. Love your channel. Too much head movement at the end though. Greetings from Sweden
Thanks Gino! Greetings from Chicago! The constructive feedback is always welcome...always trying to improve.
Another cool video with a fresh design 👍🏼 and cool that you use Metabo tools - their headquarters are just a 5 Minute ride away from my home - greetings from Germany :)
Thanks Dominik! The Metabo HPT tools are actually from a different company, which is owned by the same parent company as the Metabo you are familiar with. Metabo HPT is the North American version of the tools sold under the Hikoki brand in Germany. It's a bit confusing :) I'm definitely seeing some of that German engineering from Metabo seep into the new Metabo HPT /Hikoki tools, and that is a very good thing, I think....
@@modustrial Oh yes that´s confusing, but now I remember that you already explained it in a earlier video where you built a planter with color inlays :) I'm confident that's a good thing. My dad has a Metabo hammer drill for about 20 years now and it still works like on the first day.
Surprised I missed this one! Thanks for the heads up, my girlfriend would love these. Shes obsessed with succulents and these are very nice planters. Did you make these for your girl this time around too?? Haha!
These are definitely more of a hit with the female crowd! So far I'm just using these around my loft, but we shall see where they end up 😉
@@modustrial haha they definitely are a hit with the ladies. Keep me posted especially if you happen to make an extra pair! Btw leave the city of Chicago and visit the city of NY! We absolutely need to get a drink together without a doubt. 🤣 you pay though you have the UA-cam paychecks lol!!
Sounds good to me!
I've heard that having succulents in a container without a way for the extra water to drain from the bottom can cause mold and or the plant to die. Would it be possible to drill a couple holes at the bottom of the steel cups and then a few holes through the bottom of the wood portion to allow for drainage?
Interesting, I didn't know that. It would definitely be possible to drill through the steel with your average cordless drill. It's pretty thin. For what it's worth there are no holes in the original ones I got from Etsy. I've had those for 5 years now, and never had problems with the plants dying in them
That's if you over water them, they only need watering when the soil goes dry, but only a small amount
What, no leds? 😭
I'm only joking pal, another awesome video, already planning some for my mother's conservatory.
Keep up the amazing work.
Lol, gotta be more than a one-trick pony 😉 thanks much brother!
@modern craftsman I would highly suggest you watch the whole video before making accusations. I clearly explain that these are copies of planters that I bought from Etsy, so its clear I wasn't trying to claim the design as my own. I actually didn't remember where I bought them, but the video description has been updated with a link to revolution.
👍👍👍👌👌👌
Thanks! 😀
Heya!
What app do you use for designing? Thanks
SketchUp and fusion 360
cool project! but in terms of safety, please do not connect the battery before changing the saw blade, do it after :)
Good tip! Thanks!
top
Thanks Johnny!
Quais os ângulos?
Can this be done using a circular saw?
I think it would be tricky with the angles, but possible with some create clamping and support
@@modustrial Thanks! haha im going to give it a try and see what happens then!
Surprised you have spray paint in chicago since you cant buy it in the city here.
Yup, have to mail order it. No rule against using it the right way, just can't purchase it here :)
Hahaha! Patt made a joke about you bootlegging spray paint while we were watching this!
🤣🤣 I guess I have a new career 😜
The planters are great and all, but the real question is, where do I get a cute "cat wrap" like the one you're wearing at the end of the video? Lol.
(My older cat Nibbles used to sit around my husband's neck like that when she was a kitten (she's an orange tabby too) my little runt black kitty, Inky, nope you couldn't pay her in lbs. of cat treats to sit on his shoulders, lol!) But I do really like how the planters came out, one suggestion though, especially with succulents, you might want to drill a hole all the way through the wood that's smaller than the hole you drilled at top so the cup can still sit flush with the top of the planter, then drill a few small holes in the metal cup inside the diameter of the hole drilled through the wood & coat only the hole in a waterproof varnish so water can drain but not be absorbed by the wood. :)
Thanks Krista! My cat, Karma, has been with me over 15 years now....he's grown pretty attached and doesn't like to leave my side, so sometimes I just have to let him in the video :). Good suggestion for the holes. In my experience (had the original planter I bought for 5 years) it does OK without the holes if you are careful not to over-water.... That said, why risk it? Drilling holes for drainage is definitely a good idea
I do it before 3 years
😊👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👍🏻
It's like it threen Dimantion !@
LOL 8:12 mark Your cat's color matches your project or the project matches your cat.
After watching this video, I'm crying, because I'm a European dude and we use metric😥
(which is better than imperial btw)
I am on board with worldwide metric... Would love to see that happen
You're a patent attorney and partner at your firm. You live in a very luxurious Chicago apartment. Why in the world would you need squarespace to sponsor your video? Also, where is your shop located in relation to your apartment? Is it a separate space that you rent?
My shop is in my basement...not the most desirable. And things aren't always what they seem... I suggest trying to work 50-60 hours a week at a high stress job, then put another 50+ hours per week into UA-cam, before judging. Im trying to be selective about my sponsors, and associate with brands I already use and like, but they definitely are what makes this channel possible for me.
