// ABOUT THIS VIDEO
Today I'm building DIY planters. These modern, modular planters are a simple woodworking project. And these things would also make great Snack holders.
// DIMENSIONS
- all material is 1/4" thick
- pieces that make triangle are 4.5" x 1.75" with 60 degree bevels on each end.
- Bottom pieces cut to size needed after rabbits have been cut

Very cool and simple idea. The design is great, as usual.
Thanks Mike
The Tri-Force/Star of David planter. 😊
yup yup. Also has a sort of aperture thing going on
I have no preference, with or without CNC, I just like the you recognized some folks don't have a CNC. I like these planters, what a great Mothers Day gift. Thanx.
I like the way you think...and you just saved me a trip to the mall :)
I love watching your videos, they make my lunch at work much more enjoyable, the planters look great, I have found that perfect miters around a whole object, like a picture frame are hard! A great way to hide the gaps and imperfections has been to run a screwdriver over the joint to crush the fibers into the gap, then sand and it almost goes away.
Super simple but super elegant - awesome Chris!
Another great looking project Chris!! I made some simple succulent and tealight holders last week on my channel...no joinery just a sander, a drill press and some scrap wood. I'll keep these in mind to try once I get my table saw.
Nice...yeah, these kinds of projects can be remarkably similar but use a very different stable of tools to create
Just loved it great job
Great idea, your humor is even better.
A nice project - that could be a nice way to use up smaller scraps.
Lots of craftsmanship in the video itself as well as the project. Great stuff as always
it´s gorgeous mate!!!! the different ways that you have to achieve the same project with different tools!!!....... cheers!!!
love the simple design! looks fantastic! Great project
I seriously feel better just listening to your commentary. Builds are always great, but your voice is like butter, only not as messy.
My voice is like a Pima T-shirt ;)
Very cute! I need something simple like this lol
Nice. It's a pretty simple build :)
Love this and the cnc design!
I dig it.
Nice!!! One for me to make.....
Another enjoyable project. Thanks for sharing.... Jack
Thanks Jack
Excellent! I gave you a thumbs up, most of all, for the "'cause that can lead down a really bad rabbit hole" paragraph at the end of the video. Great line in the sand.
Thanks Rick...gotta draw that line somewhere :)
Very inspirational video. Thanks for sharing.
I'll watch the CNC made planters also. I don't have a CNC (will I ever have one?) but I see it as another tool which (sometimes) makes some projects easier to realize.
I loved the karate chops and smoke signals joke :) it would probably get a lot of views though. Or smells. Or whatever it is that you do with smoke signals.
Thanks for the final comment. I'm sick of hearing people complain about the tools used. These are inspirational videos, not detail plans. Just do what you can with what you have.
Nice work man! Love the design.
Thanks Jordan
Love your stuff so glad I follow you for inspiration
Thanks Carey...appreciate it :)
Very cool project! :)
Clean! Do succulents not require any drainage?
good point there at the end ;-). Cool simple ideas are mostly the best looking. Nicely done.
Thanks Staf :)
I like the simple and smooth design. Like butter! ;)
hehe...thanks!
Love your videos ❤️
Thanks Jack :)
Simple design, excellently executed!
Thanks Josh
"But you know what you shouldn't skip on?" Ooo, what ad are we segwaying into today?
haha....Mack Weldon :)
Chris Salomone Sponsored by an underwear brand? 😮 It seems like someone else noticed you look good in skinny jeans…😏 Too bad you didn't provide proof you were wearing others of their products besides the T-shirt though…😄
Your design skills are top shelf. Furthermore, your communication skills are masterful. You got skillz! Love your videos. Thank you!
Thanks Paul...appreciate it
Triangles are my favorite shape, three points where two lines meet.
Cool little project
Cheers
Tim from Wood 4 Nothing
LOL smoke signals! Though I do think this could be made with hand tools. You should give Roy Underhill the challenge. :)
I can’t imagine the challenges y’all face having to justify why a is different than b. Everyone has an opinion I guess. You vids are great and inspire viewers to achieve more than thought possible. Much love brother!
Thanks Joshua...appreciate it :)
For what it's worth...(probably only pennies of ad revenue).. I like seeing you use the CnC. It's an awesome tool, and I'm here to watch you use awesome tools to make awesome things, even if I don't have them myself. Thanks man.
i prefer this way :)
I want to see the karate chop lumber breakdown strictly from a curiosity standpoint.
I'll have to start taking some lessons first :)
Me too😀
This Old Tony could show you how it's done.
You could also make the same modular planters as the CNC with either a scroll saw or bandsaw - it's basically a bandsaw box without a drawer or lid. No need to apologize for having a tool that others don't have access to.
I've never made one...but you're right. Might be something to explore down the road
It might actually beat the CNC. Take your original hexagon, cut it apart into the odd shaped blocks, resaw off the bottoms, drill out the corners so they're round, make your bandsaw entry points inline with the grain and saw out the middles. A little glue in the entry kerf and gently clamp it shut. Sand out the interiors, glue the bottoms back on, sand the exteriors, and you're done.
Another great build. Time to hit the road :)
haha...already notified eh :)
All around great video. Keep doing what you're doing, you're good at it.
Thanks Matt
This would be cool to do with bamboo!
is there a possibility that we'll be seeing a sofa set soon?
This looks really amazing man...Thank you for sharing! BTW - do you have a video explaining on the math behind those angled cuts?
Thanks...and sort of. But not really. I go over it in decent detail in the Bad Larry video. The trapezoidal credenza. It's different but the same idea of running the piece vertically.
Hey. I really like this idea and you whole design aesthetic. Do you have any other simple ideas like this to brighten a boring office/desk.
seriously you should start a comedy channel ... you are an intellectually funny person and I love your sprinkling of 20$ words ... maybe even narrating childrens books ... when I watch your channel besides the content (excellant) your voice is calming and soothing ... thank you for making the little piece of my world that I share with you great ...
Thanks Andre....I do love comedy - I don't think I have the personality for it though. I'm too shy and dry.
Great video as usual.... great job on the karate chopping....,🤪
I'm working on it :)
Chris Salomone working on editing a video for the plywood change.
I wear t-shirts that costs 3 Euro each, to spend 10 times more for a product that maybe last just as long does not seem like a good investment. the ones I have comes in 5 different colours and 3 different designs so I have plenty to chose from. That's not the only type I wear, but on a day to day basis it is. They also last about 8 months and feel good to wear as well, and what's most important is that they aren't too warm.
Those cheap T-shirts could be made of cotton, grown where before a forest was. A lot of water could have been used, what otherwise could have been water for drinking.
There could have been used chemicals which can be dangerous to health for both wearer and producer. The people who produced those cheap T-shirts
could be children, who should rather go to school than working in a factory. Cheap things also have their price which can not be expressed in money.
I prefer an interpretive dance for conveying your karate-chopped, hand-tool extravaganza. #hatersgonnahate
I can try...but might accidentally make it rain :)
:D :D :D
Love your videos and love the voice over!! Ofer Nahari Israel
Thank you...appreciate the kind words :)
Hi Chris Salomone , I have noticed that there was a David shield in your video. Was it intentional? Are you Jewish?
Very cool! I would love to see the karate chops version but maybe you deliver it by fax machine.
Save your butter for your toast? Huh?
instead of wearing it of course :)
No music? I love your micro rant at the end. You are totally right. Progress is ok.
There's music. You scared me for a minute :)
Huh, on my phone I can't hear it. Weird.
it's pretty faint in the background. It also doesn't kick in until like a minute in
There was also a blank spot at the end when you were sanding that there was just no music and no VO at all. I think that's what drew my attention. It's probably just crappy phone speakers for most of my issue. Love you, man.
Can you link to the sukkulents? I like the round green one. :D
I'll get my wife to send me the link. They came in packs...not individual though
Chris I'm going to need you to provide me with a smoke signal conversion chart so I can understand your measurements lol
Look northeast at dusk :)
Thanks Chris. Beautiful as usual. Thanks. What tools are you going to use to start that fire?
Lighter and Gasoline :)
I don't often understand the instructions that you give. But, you have such a cool, calming voice, that I must keep watching to see if I can ever catch on.
you'll get there :)
Love the back and forth between you and the troll at the end. Good stuff! Now I don't know which ones I like better...the triangles or the oddly shaped ones you did last time. The triangles, being equilateral and all, are just so pleasing to the eye!
Thanks Bruce - the troll I'm responding to was kind of a made up representative of a particular type of commenter.
so what degreees do i cut if on a mitre saw. i cut at 30 degrees. 120 minus 90. dodnt seem to be right.
Do you have a link to your smokescreens?
In the works :)
i wouldn't mind seeing a video where you only use karate chops to cut the wood!!!
Beautiful design as usual. And a great end result. Can't wait to see them made with karate chops Will you be using Instagram to tell us when to watch out for the smoke.
The road? 😂
Interesting.. The handmade version is repetitive in form and the computer made version isn't.
haha...Never thought about what I think you're implying, but yeah, it is kind of opposite from how that would typically work out :)
You're unintentionally challenging convention Chris
Manolis Sampson I guess it's easier to batch similar things out by hand and the cnc it probably doesn't matter if their similar
Your voice kinda sounds like Adam young, the singer in owl city. Oh, and your wood working is amazing!
But the best part about not using a CNC is getting to tell people that you didn't use a CNC.
priceless :)
#hideyourcnc
Chris I love these. Do you make things for people. I am disabled and my neighbors keep stinking their feet under my fence to try and mess with my service dog. I can't afford to get a new fence so these would be great to put along the fence to keep them from being able to stick their feet under there but again disabled and can't build them myself.
I like the idea of the triangles...putting them one straight one backwards one straight one backwards if that makes since
Do you sell those set of modern succulent planters?
I don't....just made them the one time
Well said, I have recently joined the ranks of CNC owners, and I am blown away with the “pushback” from people about using them, a fellow maker posted a picture of an organizer (basically your succulent planters) and it was beautiful, 1st comment, I would love one if it wasn’t machine made.......all he didn’t do was physically hold the router.....the rest is hand made come on......lol love your podcast as well - keep it up man 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👊🏻👊🏻👊🏻
haha...people get offended man. It'll slowly change over time :)
is there any drainage? or soil and then rocks on top?
Fake Cacti :)
@@Foureyes.Furniture lol delayed response for me, i guess succulents don't need much drainage at all, if you were to put real succulents in it, what would you use to protect the inside?
These honestly wouldn't take any longer to make with just hand tools but really no one likes big box store tools and as bad ass as karate chops are getting those miters right would be a nightmare. I would be a little concerned that this design would split along those butt joints over time. However, they look great and a great use for some cherry scraps.
Karate chopping miters is a huge PITA :P
here in non-weird units :D
// DIMENSIONS
- all material is 6.35mm(1/4") thick
- pieces that make triangle are 114,3mm(4.5") x 44,45mm(1.75") with 60 degree bevels on each end.
Oh great now we'll have Social Smoke Signal Marketers who will send you kindling but charge you for bon fires! 🤣 Awesome design man and great vid
haha...Thanks man :)
those are live succulents? is there a protective layer for water or just lots of stain?
They are plastic :)
they're nice, is there a way you could make this so you could use live plants? or live succulents? Using maybe a few coats of hard vanish on the inside since succulents dont require much water anyway?
Karate chops and smoke signals 8-)
getting back to basics :)
*waits for the karate chop video* :-p
I like the cnc videos I don't have one but I will eventually. The cool thing about woodworking is, you have about 100 different ways of making the same project. Get creative .
Indeed. Skinning cats and making things out of wood :)
Your segways for your sponsors make me laugh every time lol
gotta keep it fun :)
I didn't watch this video because I don't have rubber bands. But I'd love a karate chop build. Why was the new Karate Kid called the karate kid when he did Kung Fu? Anyways, jk. I watched this one and the cnc one as well.
Somebody else probably trademarked Kung Fu Kid I'm guessing. The world may never know
yeah, but not everyone can do karate chops, or translate smoke signals. who do you think we are, daniel larusso and mr. miyagi?
I hate this bike and I hate Reseda...I want to go back to New Jersey Ma!!!!
Oh and for the record if I got 25k views for a video on my channel I would be gobsmacked and chuffed to bits. It's all relative isn't it😀😀
Whenever I see someone making the anti cnc comment, I think well at some point the table saw was a new invention and people probably scoffed at that.
I didn't watch the CNC vid, because I don't have one. I think most of us don't. But I watched this one.
that makes sense
First
second unfortunately :P
You know your COULD HAVE made this on this CNC. 😉
Are you going to post some shots of both versions mixed and matched together?
People complaining about CNC usage can suck it. Seriously, it's just a newer tool for woodworking. And those who complain saying it isn't woodworking need to just stop. I doubt they avoid any other technological advancement. I'm sure they drive a car, use a phone, obviously a computer of some type. It's just a new tool and it requires new skills.
indeed. And I can tell you between these two projects, with all of the tools at my disposal....the CNC version was WAY harder for me to make and design. Making 10 million of them might be easier with a CNC - but one...not so much
Obviously, neither of you are considering the cost of the cnc itself. Some of us have limited budgets and do not have corporate sponsors. Your analogies don't have any basis nor do they apply to all serious woodworkers.
I’m a professional cabinet builder and woodworker, I have a CNC at my shop, but I understand when people say it’s not wood working, truth be told even when useing power tools there is a huge learning curve, also when clamping down a template and useing a pattern bit on a router you have to make sure not to tilt the router and to climb cut to get the best finished product, something as simple as turning a brad nailer 90 degrees so the nails have less of a chance of blowout do to bending along the factory lines on the brads takes years of knowledge and trial by error, I use cabinet vision and it’s not overly complicated to learn, so if someone buys that program and takes a week Figuring it out, then bam there a woodworker? I can’t dog someone for useing a machine that I own, but let’s not pretend that useing a cnc is not infact Easier and that building a mortise and tenon table using “power tools” should be respected more amongst woodworkers.
Daniel B the same can be said for power tools vs hand tools. At the end of the day it's all tools just getting you to the same result. A pattern bit and a router get the same results as CNC almost, and it's not seen with near the angst that using a CNC is. I'm not going to argue that using a CNC would replace the skill it takes to design and build from scratch, but to batch out a ton of production work or get almost exact results for templates, hell yeah, use it. I design and build furniture mostly starting from rough slabs I select and get dried. Doesn't all end up as live edge slabs, but either way I'm using a multitude of tools and skills to get to the end product. If some of those skills involve 3d design, then so be it. CNC and 3d printers will become the next tools that are in almost every shop.
reupload?
are you asking if it's the same as the project from a week ago?
It's a diff project of the same idea
This project would have been better received by me had you actually used it. I mean had you put real plants in it and shown us how you were excited about using it, it would have gone over much better. Don’t build stuff you don’t give a shit about and expect others to dig it.
I liked the project. I was just listening to the podcast and thought I’d give you my pov. I enjoy your vids and pods. Keep up the good work!
The content to ad ratio is getting seriously concerning... 1 minute / 6 on your underwear, seriously?!
the ads are pretty much always the same length, this just happens to be a short video - I wouldn't lose any sleep over it :)
Thibault JEHL I wish he was _in_ his underwear for a minute (or 6)!😁
