In this episode, I show how to make a DIY Modular Indoor Wall Garden with Plant-Grow LED Strip Lights, and White LED Lighting. The entire DIY wall garden is made out of a single sheet of plywood, and was my entry into Kreg Jig’s One Sheet Contest ( #kregonesheetcontest ). The planters are made from stacks of plywood. Each planter is modular, in that it attaches with magnets, and has magnets on two sides, allowing it to be flipped 90 degrees and re-attached as a cubby hole in the same location.
This might seem a bit unusual as a project, but I think it is a cool way to get plants into areas that you otherwise couldn’t, and to provide some flexibility to change the setup to provide more or less storage. It would work great to add greenery. Storage, and lighting behind a desk, in an office, or in an entryway / foyer (where I will be using it).
The white LEDs are SK6812 WWA LEDs, and are controlled with an inexpensive controller, which allows them to be switched between warm white / cool white / amber colors, and to do some fun chasing animations.

I'm thinking about getting back to concrete in the next video. What do you think? More concrete? More LED lighting? Or maybe both? :)
How about a workstation with organic-looking concrete sides, plywood shelving, and focused LED worklights?
More concrete, LED lighting, and REAL wood specially the last part, REAL WOOD lol (but thats just my opinnion keep the vids coming, really like em
Cool idea...I have been thinking about giving my shop area a makeover, and something like this would be really cool.
Modustrial Maker conc
I'm enjoying the concrete a lot! I've started to experiment with my own fancier cement blends, prior to your videos my only experience with concrete was quickcrete bags for post bases outdoors, where looks don't matter and consistency isn't really that important. I've been afraid to try nicer concrete stuff, but your GFRC recipe is what I started using, so far I've cast three bowls, a slab for stain experimenting, and a Tardis with a silicone chocolate mold I had laying around!! :D
I’m completely with you; the edge banding of plywood can be stunning if treated and presented well.
Really dig the concept here, very cool!

Thanks! Glad you like it.
This is a hella cool build...Great job!
Thanks much!
This would be perfect for a small studio apartment or dorm room. If you used a piece of cork or metal on the board it would make a cool bulletin board over a desk. Colorful, and practical. So nice.
Thanks! And some good ideas to modify it as well
Brilliant. So different. Well done
Thank you!
Complimenti , bel progetto .
THIS IS FREAKING AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!! It's 2020 and I'm barely discovering this. =O
Me too :) I started with the warehouse renovation and now I'm binge-watching the rest. Honestly surprised this one didn't get more attention, it's such a great idea and can be adapted to a way smaller/cheaper selection of power tools if need be.
Thank you for not making me feel bad for designing as I go. I feel the same as you mentioned, if you design as you go, you can discover things that you might not otherwise.
Yes, there is no "right" way to do things. Some ppl get amazing results planning ahead, I will occasionally use SketchUp to play with designs, but even then I usually figure out dimensions by seeing what looks right to me as you go. Suffice to say I will never be selling plans :)
Modustrial Maker I am the same way. When I'm building something, I like to see how it looks as I go. I make many changes on the fly.
@@modustrial the hard part for me in approaching projects this way is I can NEVER explain the base concept well enough to my husband for him to help me, & I have a hard time finding tools appropriate for my 5'2" height & small hands!
I wish more tools were designed & made with people my size in mind. But I guess we're not the target market
Love this
Thanks much!
Very cool amazed ya did it with ply
Thank you!
Awesome video! I l love the layered plywood, working on a video that uses the same technique!
Thanks! Me too -- plywood end grain just looks so cool. Looking forward to seeing what you create!
Im going to create one for our salon :)) thank you!!
Thanks!
So cool! Also giving me so many ideas :-)
Glad to hear! Definitely tag me on Instagram (@modustrialmaker) if you share photos of your creations - I'd love to see them.
Eine tolle Idee ! Hast mein Abo ;-)
MrHandwerk it is so german to react in german on a english speaking vid
Nice creative
Thank you!
Like your ideas..
Thank you!
Great video and project man.....;-p
Thanks much!
Pretty cool I don't really smoke weed but when it probably gets legalized here it would be a real cool thing to grow your personal weed but I think you would need bigger led grow lights but not hard to make the changes
James Holbrook you can't grown anything in soil without proper drainage, he has cactus and shit in there
Weed grows up to 4 or 5 feet in height. It would not grow in those tiny little planters on a wall.
yes its me again and really getting into this one as well, question? how hard would it be to extend that bottom shelf box out to the end and cut it round to fit the back drop, so it would look like one continuous piece? I see many different ways and applications that would make this into a every day household fixture and kind of like a night light for any entry way, I could see this idea as a highly sellable concept, should do another one but paint the back board in black, to me kind of looks like bamboo pressed together, has a Asian feel to it really like awesome
That wouldn't be hard at all. Just add a few more plywood squares to the stack. And a black backdrop (maybe with chalkboard paint so you could label plants) would be cool!
good job
Thanks!
Hey just found out about your channel, great work!
Thanks! Glad you are enjoying the builds!
Hope I have all this equipment.
Loved this video, but I gotta express how impressive it is on how much your production has improved.
Thanks John! I agree completely....I'm always trying to improve the videos, and have learned a lot since this one!
Great vid, think i'm going to build one for my wife, she loves succulents! Are those leds battery powered or powered through an outlet? didn't see you plug it in anywhere.
Thanks! The LEDs are plugged in for this project
How did you seal the planters to protect them from water damage?
I love this project!
I think I may make larger planters inspired by this project
I see now you used Waterlox.
Thanks for this video!
I'm feeling absolutely inspired, & your video made it possible for my husband to understand my idea. I may incorporate some wood bending into my design as well. I may not have the planters I'm imaging until next year, but I'm excited to try to make them
5:35 Word!
Seems like drum sanding the inside would of been easier before glueing the bottom on? Very nice work. I also like the layered look of better plywood.👍
Thanks! And yes i think you are right that would have been easier
If you had to do it again, do you think you could cut down the number of magnets used on each side to three or maybe two?
+Hotrod Hog yes, definitely would just do two larger ones...might even get away with one.
genius
Thanks much!
Modustrial Maker I have a simple idea of whether I can offer it to you?
+Mohamed Habash yea, of course. I love new ideas
Great video I enjoyed it, however can't hit like anymore, UA-cam adds liked videos to a list of likes and then I have to go delete them. Sorry, but UA-cam change the way they did things again.
Are those the kind of plants that don't really need much light or water or those air plants? Are those lights grow lights and can you plant things like herbs in this?
TigerWild thanks! And I noticed that change too, I don't know why YT did that.
These plants do require a lot of light, and the LEAD grow lights (link in description) seem to provide enough. I think you could easily grow herbs. That is probably what I will end up using it for. I just staged it with succulents because it was easy to do for the video :)
Do those LED light strips work well for growing plants indoor (no other natural lighting). I haven't seen any other vides that even mention those as an option.
Yup, they do.
Very cool and easily modified project. White LEDs are actually superior to the "burple" LEDs sold for growing. Warm 4000K - 5000K temperature white LEDs would be just fine and inexpensive on eBay or Amazon. Never trust the PSA adhesive on the LED strips.
Thanks! And good to know about the LED strips for plant growth
This is a really nice project but you would be better off using 7020 warm white or neutral white LED strips.
Can you clarify? Better off for the plants? I used specialized lights specifically for plants (they give off the red and blue color). The white individually controllable strip is there too, but is only intended as a room light, not for the plants.
White light is actually a mixture of many wavelengths. White LEDs are actually blue LEDs with a phosphor added to the lens. The type of phosphor determines the temperature (K) and if the LED is warm, neutral, or cold. Plants use mainly red and blue but also small amounts of the remaining colors except for green but including infrared and ultraviolet. Cree is the preeminent maker of LEDs and the actual light emitting dies that are sold to other LED makers who basically add the package. Listed following is a link to a technical article. www.cree.com/led-components/media/documents/HorticultureReferenceDesign.pdf
If you used 3500-4000K white LEDS and compared plant growth compared to the red/blue (known as burple) LEDs making sure to use similar wattages, the plants would grow better under the white light. It's also harder to spot problems under the red/blue LEDs, but in this case there is ambient room light which would probably minimize that issue. The 7020 LED strips (7mm x 2mm) seem to be the brightest available in the LED strips and are significantly more intense (more PAR) that the red/blue. Much of the lighting research is directed towards growing marijuana but there are indoor facilities springing up world wide growing vegetables using higher power LEDs than the .1 - .25 watt used in the flexible strips.
Interesting, good to know. I'll definitely look into these for a future project

Do a house tour
I've been thinking about doing a loft tour if there is interest, maybe on an Instagram live session.
:)
Looks like a spooky face
Leave it to UA-cam to see these things , lol :) I didn't see it at first, but looking again I can see what you are talking about. It is getting close to Halloween I suppose...
Narrating this video isn't you. It's another guy who makes videos of making stuff! Wierd!😂
