    Prince put on an amazing performance with this one! The command he has over the crowd is like no other! LEGEND! 💜

    Killer bass and co-vocals: the great Larry Graham!
    The "Richie" Prince mentions is Richie Havens, who sang "Motherless Child" at Woodstock.
    For me this is one of Prince's absolute greatest performances!!
    Thanks for your reaction! :))

    Prince concerts were highly addictive ! You really picked up that the audience is pumped and locked in. The amount of adrenaline and endorphins his fans experienced made them come for more every time. He had a large group of die-hard fans, me being one of them. We camped out in front of the concert halls to be able to have a spot on front row, sometimes even in the rain. It was tough because the next concert we'd do it all over again in another country. But the group became super close and we became friends for life.
    After years of doing that, Prince started to recognize our faces, like old friends 😂
    We were truly a Prince family and he knew he was blessed which such loyal fans.
    So in total I saw him 57 times and I wasn't even a record holder. Rewatching those live concerts you review and knowing I was there having the happiest time brings tears of joy to my eyes. But my heart breaks again realising how much I miss him 😢

    That was an excellent assessment of this legendary performance, you understood it unlike a lot of other 'reviews' on here. you broke it down perfectly dude, great to see, thanks!

    Towards the end he came in with 'Sometimes, Ifeel....' and someone started a call and response vocal, he put his hand out to them and they stopped...he knew when and how to bring the performance back in to intimacy for the finale. Respect, Mr Nelson, You get the Duke Ellington award for best band leader since, er Duke Ellington, or maybe Miles.

    I've watched this video many times. It's such a powerful performance. I know he had a somewhat troubled childhood and was put out by his parents at a young age, so I've wondered if this was a really meaningful song for him. Of course, his work with his band is amazing, as it always was. I've heard from interviews with Levi and Mr. Hayes that they could never take their eyes off him because he could throw them a cue at any time, and they had to be ready. IMO, this is one of his most intense and passionate performances ever. Mr. Nelson took them all to church that night.

    This guitar was named Habibi..... You'll see it during the playing of Purple Rain at the end of the Super Bowl performance..... It succumbed to the downpour in the final moments.

  • @smh93
    @smh93 3 місяці тому +17

    This guitar was named Habibi, which means my love in Arabic. 💜 Prince always used the band as just another instrument to play, but he never let his musicians lose their individuality because of it. And I think that’s truly amazing. Another great example of him as a bandleader is his performance of Sacrifice of Victor from the Glam Slam 1992 concert film. Or Cream from that same show. Or All the Critics Love U in Montreux at the 2009 Montreux Jazz Festival if you can find it on UA-cam. 🥰

    • @smh93
      @smh93 3 місяці тому +1

      Just rewatched all these clips back, and that live performance of Cream at Glam Slam is probably the best showcase of his band leading.

  • @dragonballz4998
    @dragonballz4998 3 місяці тому +6

    He commanded the bands he formed from day 1. He utilized hand signals, head movements, and verbal callouts to convey what he wanted. "On the 1", " turnaround again", "Vegas" are a few examples. 10:16 heavy metal Prince 😁
    Yes you are correct (at least I thought the same) he heard the crowd and decided to let them chant while he participated.
    Not to surprising though because he would engage with the audience all the time. He feeds off crowd reactions.
    40 yrs later I still have a hard time comprehending how much of a phenom he was. The ultimate real musician. I'm not even going to list all extraordinary talents and abilities and not just only in music. He touched hundreds of millions of people. This was evident on the day he died when landmarks around the world went Purple and tributes poured in from everywhere that first night. Worth checking out all the tributes. A few of my favorites were from NASA posting purple Crab Nebula, Eiffel Tower, and my favorite being the opening scene in the movie Kingsman: The Golden Circle where a fight breaks out in the back seat of a car being chased. The bad guy gets his head smashed into the music screen and the song Lets Go Crazy comes on and plays throughout the car chase and backseat fight
    Good reaction Steven

    Great P performance. great reaction too! You’re spot on about P’s stage presence and ability as a bandleader and musician. He was music. Keep on checking out Prince. There are so many good live performances available. ‘
    ‘The Question of U - Tokyo (official video)’. I also really like the way he performs this song during his 2004 Musicology tour. too. But any live version will be great!
    ‘Empty Room 2009 Montreaux Jazz
    festival’ (Empty Room/Elixor).
    ‘Shhh! - this is always a great Live Song!

    I have been loving Corey’s Prince reactions, but you took it to a whole other level, Steven! You pointed out so many moments that others have not. I’ve always thought that the moment when he backs away from the mic to let the audience continue their moment was so brilliant, so I was so excited to hear you (a musician) highlight that moment as well. You are also one of the few reactors to discuss his greatness as a band leader. I’m really looking forward to you getting the chance to take this Prince journey. Great request from Carrie!!! 💜💜💜

    Great reaction. As a longtime fan it's great to live vicariously through others discovering him for the first time. I think for most Prince diehards this concert ua-cam.com/video/rE5VL7fCL2A/v-deo.html is one of the all time favourites. It comes at a time when I believe he was aware that he couldn't physically perform the way he used to anymore, no more splits and high kicks, so he stripped things back, just a three piece band of INCREDIBLE musicians, and rearranged a lot of classic songs. The emphasis was now on musicianship, his guitar playing is stratospheric and his vocals perfection. You'll see lots more of what you loved on Motherless Child here, him real time rearranging songs and conducting the band. His bands rehearsed relentlessly (and were fined for any mistakes in shows), I chatted with one of the band members once who told me they fully learned and rehearsed 300+ songs so that he could call on them to play whatever he was feeling. The whole concert may be too much for a reaction video but I see Empty Room from this show has already been recommended. But watch the whole show for your own joy. If you liked Motherless Child this show will change your life!

    Assuming you want guitar-driven jams (rather than his many other genres), then these tunes will fit the bill: "Santana Medley (live) - Prince & The NPG"; "Bambi (Live at the Tokyo Dome 1990)"; "Creep" - Prince at Coachella 2008"; "Prince Shhh at Coachella"; "Dreamer - Live • Prince" (Jay Leno); "Prince - Stratus/All Shook Up, and All the Critics Love U (Montreux Jazz Festival 2009 - Show 2)"; "Prince - Anotherloverholenyohead" (with Rock Lobster instrumental; NFL SB Press Conference 2007). Enjoy...

    Not a bad performance of this very old song. But the best version I've ever heard was Richie Havens doing it. Richie truly made this old folk warhorse his own by making it an exciting, civil rights statement. Give that version a listen and compare.
