As a GenXer, I can confidently say, Prince is the GOAT of my generation. He had a profound influence on the music industry and the public’s perception of it. He is not only an underrated guitarist, but in many of his recordings, he plays all the instruments. He wrote music and gave it away to people breaking into the industry. There will never be another like him

Prince beat Mozart, he mastered over 14 instruments by age 17, he could dance, sing any note, rap, he wrote, arranged, performed ALL his music, including wrote hits for other artists, he has covered almost every genre, Metal, Punk rock, hip hop, pop, r&b, soul, jazz, blues, country, ambience, classical, techno, house, instrumental. The Multi-Genre God. He could play anything, and your favorite artists have been deeply influenced by him. Corey Taylor, Whitney Houston, Steve Vai, Elton John, Stevie Wonder, Lil uzi vert, H.E.R. , Paul Mccartney, all worship Prince to just name a few.
Prince recorded his first 2 albums at 16 all by himself, all instruments, lyrics, arrangement, composition & vocals were all by him. He was such a prodigy, that music executives wanted proof, they would fly across country just to see if he could really play all instruments, because it was so unheard of. Prince has over 50 official released albums and when he passed, they found over 10 thousand unreleased Prince music in his vault. He then came into the business and was the FIRST to fight for artists rights, and he WON. He would write "slave" on his cheek and go to meetings protesting against the industry. Prince was also the first artist to sell his music on the internet. You are talking about the most talented artist we will ever see.

But... If he is that good as he is/was.. How good did the others in the show have to be to be able to support him? Prince had said his father had kicked him out of the house when he was 12 years old. Prince said he called from a telephone booth begging to come back home. His stepfather said no. When I first saw this video five or so years ago (soon after he died), I couldn't believe it. I was already a fan of Prince, but was still blown away by the amount of energy he was exuding off the stage. He was clearly emotionally invested in the song, but still controlling the band and the audience like a pro. I sent links of the vid to everyone I knew, but it's so satisfying to watch it through the lens of a reaction video by a musician, one who can really appreciate the details of the performance. And the sheer genius. As you aptly conclude, Prince was MORE than the sum of his individual talents. He truly was one of a kind.

  • @johnjames3286

I've seen Prince perform 40 times and even met him a few times. The band doesn't really improv, he does and every wave of the hand, every nod of the head, every look is code to the band and they have to read that code exactly. He used to tell the band 1 hour before going on what they were playing lol. He was a genius. Watch the whole performance in difference songs he's funky, sad, intense, loose and really funny. He was always always amazing

Yes. There was nothing improvised with any of his bands. Even jam sessions like this were rehearsed. Sound checks would go on for hours. He had complete control and with a slightest movement from him the band would turn on a dime (even Larry Graham knew that ✋🏼😂) Watch his bands in any live performance and they are all looking at him. Empty Room Montreux has some moves. Hand throwing forward to signal let’s go one more time. Looks to the guitar tech to be ready to catch. His pianist never looks away. It’s beautiful to watch

What I like best about this interpretation is that it comes across as so personal. In the beginning he says, "Oh mama, mama, why did you put me on the street? I'm only 12 years old!" And Prince was about that age when he left home to escape increasing tensions with his mother and stepfather. I tend to think that's why he chose that song, to process his childhood.

Hi again here is another and this is truly outstanding. In fact if you want to see Prince at his best check out the Montreux Jazz festival 2009. Two fabulous sets both on UA-cam. This is from the first set…very paired down band. Just him, Renato Neto on keys, John Blackwell on drums and Rhonda Smith on bass! These two sets are jaw dropping, musicianship on another level. His vocals spectacular! The first song Empty Room is a heartbreak song, his vocals raw and heartbroken but the guitar takes over into almost anger and frustration. Watch his facial expressions, like he’s transcended from the stage to somewhere we will never understand! It’s jaw dropping. Also side note, a few seconds into the song he cuts his thumb on the metal trim of his suit, so he’s literally bleeding during this! Then he goes into the sexy and sultry song Elixir! Wow his vocals are faultless! He’s sexy and seductive, vocals on point! Side note, double meaning Elixir/he licks her! His vocals on this are everything … you’ll know what I mean when you watch this. I don’t have enough words to describe how fabulous this performance is. Apparently even seasoned Prince followers who had seen him dozens of times, in their own words, completely ‘lost their minds’ at Montreux because he was so amazing! 💜

What’s so harrowing about this is not that he is touching on his own childhood. It’s that he takes to the stage like it’s a therapy session: It’s exorcism. And of course he’s doing it in the environment he is most comfortable in: In music, in front of an audience. Like some sort of musical primal scream therapy. It's breathtaking.

When newcomers rave about Prince it’s the R&R Hall of Fame footage of While My Guitar Gently Weeps that everyone points to. And I show them this. Infinitely better in every way. Before he died, when the community were leaked hidden gems, this Septimo bootleg was one of my prized jewels. I am glad they are widely available on UA-cam now.
There are probably a hundred album racks you could point to. In addition to the songs you mention, I’d add If I was Your Girlfriend, The Cross, The Love We Make. I guess this channel needs video footage, so The Love We Make at Montreux 2013 would be a great one to review.

Good reaction. Princes' rendition is always, something to behold. This song is actually an old slave song sung in various ways as a means of instruction and code from one to another. Sung in many churches, it meant different things way back in history.

Your reaction was the same as mine! This song may have been an expression of his being put on the streets by his father. He had to stay with a friend because he had nowhere else to go. I do believe he was around 12 years old at the time. I have also read that When Doves Cry is about that same period in Prince's life.

It's a performance I see for the 1st time, of Prince, and it's extraordinary, so charismatic and theatrical.
At the same time, the theme of the song is touching deep instincts in the audience, mesmerizing it with emotional vocal outbursts, light effects, music of course, and... the color purple.
Some form of magic was involved in all that surrounded this special hu-man Prince. He has revealed a few details, just before he died, in an interview.
Purple is the color- symbol of nobility and redemption, and Prince's song/movie Purple Rain is what consolidated Prince's fame, isn't it? Often, religion was a theme in his work, merged with magic symbolism. Watch the projected light-symbol on the floor where he stands.
There's esoteric symbolism in the color purple, Prince's favorite color, if it's not mere fantasy, made up in the blinding glamour of this prince. He knew how to dress well😍
Also, a similar ending of a lifetime on stage, Michael Jackson revealed significant details about his business with Sony, claiming 51% of the rights, outsmarting Sony, sortly before his death. Riddles are plenty, I believe.

Thank you for your brilliant words for a "person" for whom there are scarcely words ... "Prince embodied humanity"... the best I have ever heard. I have barely been able to listen to his music since he left... it was like my soul found its home when I first heard him at 15... each of his albums and performances was like a phase of my life. Tonight was the first time I have heard this performance. listening to it was almost more than I could bear, but hearing you along with it, your ability to put words to the experience in a way that was on his level, made it so I could breathe. I know that sounds extreme, but that is and will always be his effect on me. Thank you for your genius emotional intelligence. He would've dug you very highly!

R.I.P Prince......the word genius is banded around far too easily but in his case,he was a genius. A criminaly underrated guitarist who was quoted as being heavily influenced by another criminaly underrated guitarist/songwriter Bill Nelson. Check out his gem "Crying to the Sky" to hear where Purple Rain was born!!!!! Great reaction 👍

I love this performance! He emotes with every note and I feel everything he’s giving to this performance. It’s desperate, pained, and oh so fabulous! Whatever he does, he commits 100 %. IMO he is one of the GOAT.

    • @devonseamoor
      @devonseamoor Рік тому

@Tracey Williams. One of a GOAT? To me, and I know how celebrities, those born with fabulous vocal chords, are sometimes "made" into charismatic performers, by MK Ultra methods, like Marilyn Monroe, Whitney Houston, Michael Jackson, and Prince, with others who also passed away.
Beyoncee, Lady Gaga, and Celine Dyon are examples of such celebrities. Celine Dyon's voice is silent now.
When one starts exploring the history of MK - Ultra, and the Tavistock Institute, the fate of these people, their lives and careers, plus the timing of their death, the picture will become clear.
This may sound weird, and fantastic, but (I'm Dutch) I know a Dutch/Rhodesia born guy, Sacha Stone, whose name may sound familiar, who was a bandleader in his youth, attracting the interest of certain investors (related to Hollywood, the entertainment industry).
Sacha was approached by an investor, who offered him a huge salary in exchange for total obedience to all protocols of a program that would "make" him a celebrity.
      Sacha refused, obeying his gut-feeling.
He's now active in ITNJ, the International Tribunal for Natural Justice, which addresses child-trafficking.
What I'm trying to make clear, is that those who become immensely popular, with worldfame, are often artificially enhanced in their abilities, while the investor-profiteers fill their pockets.
These horror stories begin to see the light of day as much as the experiences we are given by healing voices who speak the truth without tricks and mirages.

People talk about how Prince was a multi-instrumentalist and an under-rated guitarist, but to me his best instrument is his voice. I normally don't care for gushing reactions, but in this case how can you not. I can't get enough of these videos af Prince now that I've never seen before--he was amazing and no loss to the music world can compare in my book.

… additionally to all the other wonderful comments here i wanted to ask if you know anything about his life bc this song would’ve hit home for him as he was living from the age of 12 with a friend from school, Andre cymone they allowed him to move into their basement, ( his mother used to lock him in the attic for many many hours where he would go hungry and thirsty but his father’s instruments were there so that’s where he secretly played his father piano etc he would be in trouble if and when his father found out) so he was motherless and fatherless basically before he was a teenager. Andre joined his band ultimately , Prince took all his friends with him towards the ‘big time’ if they had some musical talent

1999 and PURPLE RAIN were the soundtrack of my late teen and early twenties. when Prince died unexpectedly in 2016, I cried a lot - not just out of nostalgia, but also in recognition of the talent and artistry we lost.
I first saw this video/performance in the days after Prince died in 2016. To me, this performance encapsulates so much of what made Prince such a titanic talent: his immense stage presence; the way he takes a song he didn’t write and make it completely his own; the way he absolutely *wails* on guitar; and of course, his vocal performance.
You do a great job of articulating so much about this performance that I felt innately, but could not put into words as well as you. Even more impressively, you did it upon your first viewing. (I revisit this performance every few months just to luxuriate in its brilliance.) I look forward to watching your other vocal analysis videos. 😊
