I've been to every prince concert in the tristate nyc area since 1988, love sexy tour. A religious experience every time hands down every time the best live performer. And I've seen them all!
When he first jumps on the drums, he’s playing the riff from his song Tamborine. It’s on the around the world in a day album. Same album America is on.
He was a great musician and entertainer and I really loved his funky live jams...I had the luck to see him 4 times here in Switzerland and 1 time in Germany.
Is there no limit to his talent? This was amazing. He is so high-energy and captivating to watch. I want to go back to teenage me and tell her to stop being so reluctant to listen to Prince!!! I missed so much greatness ❤
One time he just popped up here in Chicago and said "I'm throwing a concert for the next two days" boy was I glad that I was able to get a ticket. It was cold asF that night too standing in line
I saw Prince in Michigan in the early 90’s, I believe. I’m coming up on 60 in a couple of weeks so I don’t remember the date but the concert was AMAZING!
You will never hear about a bad Prince concert. I was fortunate to see him in concert over 10 times. From 1980 - 2004. He didn't play my city after '04 and I couldn't travel due to health issues. His soundchecks could last hours, then a full concert 1-2 hours, then a few hours for an aftershow. The consummate performer!
Thanks for your analysis of his drumming. I saw him on drums for about 15 minutes at an after show in Las Vegas when the sun was coming up. Surreal experience!
Prince was a hell of a performer and musician . I’ve seen Prince live several times . The last concert of his that I went to I had front row seats he handed me a guitar pick near the end and shook my hand . Even in his 50s he was amazing to watch.
I've been to serval of his live performances as early as 1982 the $25 TICKETS 🎟 CONTROVERSY WORLD TOUR, 1999 WORLD TOUR, PURPLE RAIN ☔ NEW ORLEANS, LOVESEXY 88, ETC DIRTY MIND WAS MY PERSONAL FAVORITE IT WAS DEFINITELY MY PURPLE RAIN LONG BEFORE THE STORM OF FAIR WEATHER FANS. I'VE BEEN WATCH PRINCE ROGERS NELSON CREATIVENESS SINCE THE FOR YOU ALBUM *(8TRACK) PLAYER YESTERYEAR.
Back in the 70's when Prince first started, he was opening for Zapp. It was his show that caught my eye. I had never heard of him, but the next day I went to the record store and bought every album he had at the time. Been following him ever since.
I actually knew his drummer from 90s to 2000s John Blackmon who passed away a few years ago. Check him out with Prince. He was a native of Columbia SC where I lived and he was classmates with some people I'm close to. Respect
I worked at a bank in Mpls in the 90’s and became good friends with Prince’s jeweler. We many times hung out with Prince either in Downtown Mpls or driving around the lakes in Prince’s banana yellow BMW 850 and chatting also, at his yellow and purple house in Chanhassen, MN. He was a great guy to be around and someone I considered at the time a friend. Always high energy and very funny. RIP foresure to a legend.
His large concerts were on the chain. But even better if you can think of better were his small concerts at Paisley and his house after hours. We’d be up until the sun was coming out. Hanging with Prince from 8 to 8am was always a good time and something I will always remember.
I'm Canadian & been a fan since the beginning. Blessed to see him 5 times live.BEST concerts ever. Was waiting for the Piano tour to come to break my tie with seeing MJ but he passed before it could come to pass. Seen many many concerts in my time in different genres . Prince tops my charts. Miss him dearly. Love your reactions from a musicians standpoint because it explains the genius I heard. I knew I was hearing greatness but so good to know the why's and wherefore's.💜
I saw Prince 5 times in concert as well: Controversy Tour (Monroe, LA 1982); 1999 Tour (Monroe, 1983); Hit & Run Tour (Atlanta, 2002); Musicology Tour x 2(Atlanta, 2004). Note: There's a recording of the Monroe Controversy Tour here on UA-cam. Prince was and will always be #ThatDude as far as I'm concerned. His ballads were so amazing, and I give him props for helping me out with a few young ladies back in the day. RIP Prince...thanks for the memories.
It’s been released!!! Just in time because I’m going through Seton Hill Prince reaction withdrawal 😂 Love this reaction and this performance. I needed to be put in a better mood myself so this came at the perfect moment 💜💜💜
I've read that in addition to piano, synthesizers, drums, guitar (electric and acoustic) and bass, Prince also eventually learned flute, trumpet, saxophone, and violin. I don't think he ever played horns or violin on any recordings, but apparently at some point he did learn them. Pretty remarkable. I'd say the only other musician that comes close to his musicianship is Stevie Wonder, but even he doesn't play as many instruments as Prince did. He's called a genius for a reason.
Regarding a few of your points here. - If it was fun to play in Prince's band. There is this anecdote of the Prince and the then brand newly formed NPG (AKA the "Lovesexy" band" which were about to go on stage for their first show of the "Sign O' the times" tour. And Levi Seacer Junior, the bass player at the time, said "Good Luck everybody!" At which Prince got straight into his face and sneered, "Haven't I been working you hard enough already?" At which Levi, recounting the daily, eight hours rehearsals the band went through, said "Yeah, you worked us to death!" At which Prince continued "Then you should KNOW that there's no good luck involved here, just the result of very hard work!" In this clip, you can see Prince doing something which Revolution guitarist Wendy Melvoin always said was the most difficult thing to master at a Prince show. He would stick his hand in the air with a number of Fingers folded and the remaining ones sticking out, that was to signal how many breaks he wanted the band to play. That meant that you HAD to be on the ball all of the time, no negligence allowed. - On why he chucked his guitar after the solo. Because he broke a string, you can actually hear him trying to play a high note when it happens and playing that said note on a different string and just being able to pull it off. So he just chucked his guitar and went on without it. - On Bobby Z (Prince's drummer at the time) standing behind the kit rather than sitting behind it. Welcome to a little machinery Prince discovered during the "Controversy" Era but truly made it his own during the "1999" album and tour. The LinnDrum, drum machine. On this performance, Bobby only did cymbal breaks and the odd tom fills, but it was the LinnDrum which provided that unrelenting four on the floor rhythm which powers that song. Apparently Bobby asked Prince why he was even there if that drum machine began to take so much real estate in the shows. Prince said, "Trust me, you will learn to love it." And indeed, Bobby Z took to the LinnDrum almost straight away, since it allowed him so much freedom to embellish and add grooves to it, not to mention, he could dance around if he felt like it.
Bobby Z’s drum setup was one of the first electronic sets that was set up with the LM-1 drum machine and had a homemade trigger button lol those handclaps are straight from it.
Prince lived on the upbeat. 😅 I might have to go in and request a performance where he is trying to get the audience to clap on the upbeat, and they don't always get it. 🤣 I was only 22 when Prince passed, but I was fortunate enough to go to 38 of his shows before he dipped out. And every single one was incredible...even the smaller rehearsals and stuff that weren't as high energy. Always interesting to watch. 💜 Another great drum solo video is the performance of It's Gonna Be a Beautiful Night from the Sign O' the Times concert film. Your counterpart reacted to that one, but JJ and I both requested it, so you might just have to go back and react to it as well. 🥰
Yeah I heard that was killer and I haven’t actually checked out Corey’s reaction to it so I may keep it a surprise and watch it for myself! I bet that audience was struggling! 😂
@@snakeinthegrass7443 37 of those shows were at Paisley Park. Most of which were under $30; a lot of the private shows were free. I was a broke college kid and didn't even have a car to get out there and just hitched rides with folks. There were a couple times I paid the cover charge with a ziploc bag of change, but you gotta have your priorities straight! 🤣💜
Yes please react to It's Gonna Be A Beautiful Night. Besides Prince playing the drums it shows how much he coordinated the reaction to the whole band. Energy pack performance 💜💚
I got to see Prince one time live, and it was on the Lovesexy tour. All I can say is that he was nothing but a big ball of energy! He was the most amazing performer I've ever seen and will never be equalled! He was always one of my top 3 favorites when I was a teenager. The other 2 were Kiss and Pink Floyd. I considered all of them to be the best live performers in their genre of music.
Correction the snare is not usually on 1 & 2 it's always on 2 & 4 which is what any Drummer should know b'cuz on 1& 2 it's Raggae all day. But when it comes 2 playin' funk & JB always had his drummers put a lot of emphasis down on the # one as did Prince when you listen 2 all of his music b'cuz JB had a very a very huge influence on him & the snare drum was both accented & snycopated with one on the hi-hat opened & the snare on the up beat during his solo which all of it was pretty much syncopated. The one is always hit on the down beat of 1 & 3 4 the Bass drum & on 2 & 4 4 the Snare drum with eighth notes played on the Hi-Hats 2 set up the back beat that we all should know by being in THE POCKET!!! Saw him 4 times! 1999 tour, Purple Rain, Emancipation and Musicology. My nephew played with him briefly. He played trumpet on the song Chelsea Rogers.

He played saxophone in high school. His cousin posted the flyer for the performance on twitter and it listed Prince Nelson on sax.
He could play the saxophone but he didn't feel he played it well enough. I think if he couldn't play it well, he hired others to do it.
