The bad battery life is mainly tied into playing PC games on full tanking graphics performance. By carefully dialing settings down on a Steam Deck, a Gameboy or playstation can be played on a Steam Deck for many, many hours on a Steam Deck And Odin 2 has stuff competition with the Retroid Pocket 4 Pro which can emulate 90% of what the Odin 2 can do when on performance mode for far, far cheaper.

I like the bezels thick. This is a device you will carry around. A larger bezel can be the difference between a broken screen and slightly dented outer case.
I definitely didn't need this since I have other devices. But $35 with free shipping with the coupon for a perfect 2X upscale GBA device with a 0.6" larger screen than the original was an impulse purchase. Way higher quality than any PowKiddy I've ever personally had. I'm liking it a lot so far.

I regret Spending at least 75 USD on each of my miyoo mini. It's about $100 in my currency when I got it with shipping but nowadays the handhelds are so cheap!
i've tried the 3.5 screens, and as someone who's pushing 40 with bad vision. i found these screens are JUST enough for GBA games to see. i cant see a lick of text on psp or ps1 games really. the trimui smart pro which russ recommended and i gotta say im pretty surprised with how well it is. it feels like a switch lite and emulates just a little better tham this if you are looking for a little more power and a bigger screen.
Lately I've found myself playing more and more GBA on my old Retroid Pocket 2+, which makes this a tempting prospect! If I can get it under £25 (~$32) by Christmas I can see myself buying it too (despite definitely not actually needing it). Please let us what it's like in the longer term.
Are there any good games on GBA? I grew up in 90s, played NES and original GB but never fell in love with games until N64. I completely missed GBA, had friends that liked Pokemon but that's all I knew it for and have no interest in that.

@@skycloud4802 If it's like I've done with some old rubbery buttons, you submerge the plastic into a jar of hydrogen peroxide and leave it outside in the sunlight for awhile.
My son plays almost exclusively Kirby and the Amazing Mirror, so this might be what I replace his 35xxOld with. He broke the usb port on his so I either need to do some micro soldering or replace it.
Loving the temporary switch to a night-time review and/or in a different room. Have you considered doing one as the sun is setting, to get some nice natural orange daylight through the window, for a change of lighting?

I ordered one after seeing your review and also got the extra discount (promo code). I've been playing Super Metroid (SNES) but blown away with how many other great games are pre-loaded. Really enjoy the ergonomics of the handheld (got big hands). Definitely would have been nice to have bluetooth but for $40 I can't complain. Very happy with this product.
It's so close to what I want. I really want a horizontal system with a 3x2 screen that is original GBA shaped, with stacked shoulder buttons. Maybe with analogs (at least a left) for psp but that would be a bonus. Closest thing to that that works well for me is still my 353p, although the android side is dissapointing, I just run ARKos and it does MOST of what I want. 400xxh might work well as well.

Would love to see an indepth refresh from you, showcasing MinUI and the performance on that. Now one of the main reasons I haven't bought one of these handhelds is because I don't really wanna spend over $100 on one of these things, but at $40 I'm definitely considering grabbing one just to have so I can play some older stuff on the go. I also like the wider layout of this versus a lot of the others I've seen.
And the weird thing is, even though anbernic ships from Europe when I wanted to buy a 60 usd console there were like 15 usd taxes and another 15 for shipping (to Germany). Powkiddy sent me the device at 47 usd all costs included. On paper it looks like 45 usd device vs. 60 usd device but free shipping or not makes a huge difference.
Well, color me interested. I bought a cartridge reader and dumped all my old GBA cartridges a few years back. Since then I've been playing my ROMs on my laptop or my phone. I didn't see the need for a dedicated handheld game-playing device until earlier this year when I went on a road trip and the drawbacks of playing on my phone became apparent. Not only do touch-screen buttons kind of suck, the last thing I want to do on while traveling is run down the battery on my phone. A cheap device aimed at GBA games sounds ideal for my use case.
I was just complaining that my 280v isn't charging anymore and sad there's nothing similar to replace it with. Then, a quick hop on UA-cam, here we are!

I wasn’t using it a lot (I have a RG35XX and I prefer it) so I gave it to my wife, but more and more my kids ask my RG to play (and my wife is also playing), so I need another one, and I’s totally go with the Miyoo just because of the wifi (that mine doesn’t have), but I totally prefer the quality for the GBA in this case…as is the console that I play the most

I was going to buy the rg35xx sp for GBA games, but then this little beauty dropped. It's compact size and GBA oriented screen is everything I could want for GBA gaming on the go.
I originally set this up like I do all my handhelds with a set of games for basically every console. But I found I really only want to play handheld games on here. I know some people have made this a dedicated GBA machine and that makes perfect sense. I was going to do that but decided I want this to be a dedicated handheld machine so it's got GB, GBA, NGP, NGPC, Game Gear, Wonderswan, Wonderswan Color, and Lynx. I'm using the ES-Pixel theme and it looks fantastic. Such a great little machine for the $35 or so I spent on it.
Still wish people would just start using 720x480 screens for 3:2 aspect ratios. That aspect ratio is still integer scaled for GBA while also being just as good for other systems. Edit: Ooh, or maybe even that 800x480 screen that the PSPi uses, it’s 5:3 and also has perfect integer scaling for GBA.
For me a lot of the negatives are not really going to be an issue. I have every premium handheld device out there. I bought this as my side accessory to keep in my bag. I'll be playing this at the coffee shop, during lunch breaks, and during small time-frames where I just want to keep busy and not look at my phone. The GBA has lots of great games to keep one busy and some of the SNES games that might suffer on the hardware have GBA ports with rom hacks to fix the changes and pallettes. While the games will not sound as good as SNES and they will be fighting against the small speaker, this device is mainly meant to just quickly pass the time. Great video, I was exceptionally convinced that this was the device I have been searching for so long 🤝
I’m ordering one for my wife for her birthday. Revisiting the childhood GBA memories is more her speed than an overall bang for your buck. You mentioned custom firmware earlier in the video. I’d there a guide planned ?
I had the system on the floor a few feet away to charge it near an outlet. I was unaware that the unit plays short clips of games when idle for a few minutes. The V10 started playing a clip from Splatterhouse 2 on the Genesis/Mega Drive and scared half to death lol.
I like the form factor, but the V10 could've been less wide if they went with smaller side bezels. It's definitely a niche device, but being a specialist when it comes to GBA is a great niche to be in.
The screen is the show, it doesn't need big dual shoulder buttons. More pocketable and cute fun colours that focused on the GBA legacy would win me over. I can make 3:2 work on my 4:3 XX+ well enough, and it has a better identity.
I’m just getting into this, but I want a 3:2 for my first one because I like GBA. But the lack of WiFi for retro achievements and just quality of life makes me hesitant to pull the trigger. Is there a resource to list the different 3:2 devices available?
Hi Russ. I always watch yr videos even if I'm not buying anything. I love seeing new devices because i like viewing the shiny new toy but I'll be keeping my miyoo mini plus with onion os. I dont really need anything past ps1 for such a tiny handheld. Anything powerful will be played on my phone. I love the 21st century. Gaming is so easy these days. Alhamdulilah
A $40 handheld that can play up to PS1 is a steal! I have a Steam Deck, but I want a cheap pocket handheld that can play pixel era retro games at full speed.
And also looks like you are using SNES9X for SNES, you really should swap to Mednafen Supafaust core, its faster enough to work with aann shader in this particular game just fine.
I like the look of this. I've got a couple of retro consoles but I'm looking at something specifically for GBA games, something that's really nice ergonomically and ideally, easy to transfer save states to and from. Bonus if it does video out via USB-C. Any recommendations if price wasn't a barrier?
Been waiting for this review for so long that I already ordered it. The controls is why I pulled the trigger cause Anbernic for me always has stiffer controls whereas for me I prefer mushier buttons like the ones on the Miyoo Mini+ and the RGB30 so very excited to try this out. I'm kind of expecting it to be a wider alternative to the Miyoo Mini+ which I absolutely love but it does feel quite cramped to use. Too bad that it's low res, dim and quiet but hell, still gonna throw the whole GBA collection at it >:) Can't wait.
It's not about the perfect handheld for me. It's about just enjoying them in the moment for what they are, flaws and all. Even back on the RG350 which is very clunky and dated now, I got a lot of enjoyment out of that.

this or the V90? I love the clam-shell design, it will get banged around in a purse a lot so the extra screen protection would be good. are the controls and screen comparable? I will be mostly playing GBA but the idea of PSP and SNES is interesting.
You should do a video comparing the best GBA options. The aspect ratio is so tricky I feel like I want a dedicated GBA device but don’t know what to pick or what all the options even are.
I know some people will hate it but for consoles that are not GBA, you can always use the bilinear filter. I don't know how well it will do on that size of a screen but personally, I don't mind the composite look when it comes to the bilinear filter.

However i have sorted again my rg552, and the pixel balance with gba is fantastic (indeed still a problem with thd battery that i had to charge again😂). My trimui sp is also excellent with it, my miyoo plus too, and my rgb30 very very good with all that big square screen pixels. So i will wait even if im really tended. For a beginner that want gba emulation, indeed it a must buy. You could have compared this woth rg351p which has also a 2x integrate scale, if im not wrong. I would have loved the comparaison in screen appearance and gaming feeling betwzen the2. Maybe in a next video? Love your work by the way.❤ from france
Honestly, I have yet to see a handheld tempt me since I picked up the RG28XX. I wasn't expecting to like it as much as I do, but the horizontal layout and ultra-pocketability were home run hits for me, especially considering it also runs the same chip as the 35XX line (so it can use MinUI, as well as more specialized firmware that can support Portmaster). I think at this point, my ideal handheld would be something horizontal and fairly small, but also with dual analog sticks so I'm able to play games like Ape Escape... and really, I'm not even sure we have such a device currently.
Looks neat. I do love GBA games, so this does look interesting. This makes me miss my Anbernic 351p, which also had a really good GBA-styled screen. (The power button broke off, don't really know how I would fix it, or even source the replacement piece lol) I already have enough things that can emulate games though, I'll probably only get this if I can find someone who wants my 353v.
30:37 CAN you physically swap the dpad and buttons from the V10 to the R36S? Assuming the buttons from the R36S are hindered because of the rubber membrane.
Hi Russ, If you directly delete copies of games from your computer or change the names, you risk disorganizing the gamelist.xml file. This file contains several important information: - the game file name and directory - the name of the cropped image directory - certainly other information for the video for example A brutal solution would be to delete the gamelist.xml file and let the console system rebuild it. In this case, you will probably lose connection with the cropped photos and videos. I don't know if there is a free tool to do all this. A good tip is therefore to keep a copy of the original directory on your PC to avoid losing information.

Odin 2 Pro is known as the best for all of them. Less pricy than Steam Deck and 4x longer battery life.

For me a lot of the negatives are not really going to be an issue. I have every premium handheld device out there. I bought this as my side accessory to keep in my bag. I'll be playing this at the coffee shop, during lunch breaks, and during small time-frames where I just want to keep busy and not look at my phone. The GBA has lots of great games to keep one busy and some of the SNES games that might suffer on the hardware have GBA ports with rom hacks to fix the changes and pallettes. While the games will not sound as good as SNES and they will be fighting against the small speaker, this device is mainly meant to just quickly pass the time. Great video, I was exceptionally convinced that this was the device I have been searching for so long 🤝

I had the system on the floor a few feet away to charge it near an outlet. I was unaware that the unit plays short clips of games when idle for a few minutes. The V10 started playing a clip from Splatterhouse 2 on the Genesis/Mega Drive and scared half to death lol.

I like the form factor, but the V10 could've been less wide if they went with smaller side bezels. It's definitely a niche device, but being a specialist when it comes to GBA is a great niche to be in.
You can also select direct save states with the minus button + up or down
The screen is the show, it doesn't need big dual shoulder buttons. More pocketable and cute fun colours that focused on the GBA legacy would win me over. I can make 3:2 work on my 4:3 XX+ well enough, and it has a better identity.

I’m just getting into this, but I want a 3:2 for my first one because I like GBA. But the lack of WiFi for retro achievements and just quality of life makes me hesitant to pull the trigger. Is there a resource to list the different 3:2 devices available?

Hi Russ. I always watch yr videos even if I'm not buying anything. I love seeing new devices because i like viewing the shiny new toy but I'll be keeping my miyoo mini plus with onion os. I dont really need anything past ps1 for such a tiny handheld. Anything powerful will be played on my phone. I love the 21st century. Gaming is so easy these days. Alhamdulilah
A $40 handheld that can play up to PS1 is a steal! I have a Steam Deck, but I want a cheap pocket handheld that can play pixel era retro games at full speed.
Maybe consider the R36S AS this Here is mainly a GBA machine
I would strongly suggest installing sharp-shimmerless shader as is better than sharp-bilinear-2x-prescale.
And also looks like you are using SNES9X for SNES, you really should swap to Mednafen Supafaust core, its faster enough to work with aann shader in this particular game just fine.
I like the look of this. I've got a couple of retro consoles but I'm looking at something specifically for GBA games, something that's really nice ergonomically and ideally, easy to transfer save states to and from. Bonus if it does video out via USB-C.
Any recommendations if price wasn't a barrier?

Been waiting for this review for so long that I already ordered it. The controls is why I pulled the trigger cause Anbernic for me always has stiffer controls whereas for me I prefer mushier buttons like the ones on the Miyoo Mini+ and the RGB30 so very excited to try this out. I'm kind of expecting it to be a wider alternative to the Miyoo Mini+ which I absolutely love but it does feel quite cramped to use. Too bad that it's low res, dim and quiet but hell, still gonna throw the whole GBA collection at it >:) Can't wait.
This seems like a good alternative for the v90
V90 barely can handle SNES.
Welp.. thinking the same here. My v90 way too underpower to handle my favourite arcade. Having a good time with it when playing gba though

It's not about the perfect handheld for me. It's about just enjoying them in the moment for what they are, flaws and all. Even back on the RG350 which is very clunky and dated now, I got a lot of enjoyment out of that.

this or the V90? I love the clam-shell design, it will get banged around in a purse a lot so the extra screen protection would be good. are the controls and screen comparable? I will be mostly playing GBA but the idea of PSP and SNES is interesting.
You should do a video comparing the best GBA options. The aspect ratio is so tricky I feel like I want a dedicated GBA device but don’t know what to pick or what all the options even are.

I know some people will hate it but for consoles that are not GBA, you can always use the bilinear filter. I don't know how well it will do on that size of a screen but personally, I don't mind the composite look when it comes to the bilinear filter.

However i have sorted again my rg552, and the pixel balance with gba is fantastic (indeed still a problem with thd battery that i had to charge again😂). My trimui sp is also excellent with it, my miyoo plus too, and my rgb30 very very good with all that big square screen pixels. So i will wait even if im really tended. For a beginner that want gba emulation, indeed it a must buy. You could have compared this woth rg351p which has also a 2x integrate scale, if im not wrong. I would have loved the comparaison in screen appearance and gaming feeling betwzen the2. Maybe in a next video? Love your work by the way.❤ from france

Honestly, I have yet to see a handheld tempt me since I picked up the RG28XX. I wasn't expecting to like it as much as I do, but the horizontal layout and ultra-pocketability were home run hits for me, especially considering it also runs the same chip as the 35XX line (so it can use MinUI, as well as more specialized firmware that can support Portmaster).
I think at this point, my ideal handheld would be something horizontal and fairly small, but also with dual analog sticks so I'm able to play games like Ape Escape... and really, I'm not even sure we have such a device currently.

Looks neat. I do love GBA games, so this does look interesting. This makes me miss my Anbernic 351p, which also had a really good GBA-styled screen. (The power button broke off, don't really know how I would fix it, or even source the replacement piece lol) I already have enough things that can emulate games though, I'll probably only get this if I can find someone who wants my 353v.
30:37 CAN you physically swap the dpad and buttons from the V10 to the R36S? Assuming the buttons from the R36S are hindered because of the rubber membrane.

If you directly delete copies of games from your computer or change the names, you risk disorganizing the gamelist.xml file.
This file contains several important information:
- the game file name and directory
- the name of the cropped image directory
- certainly other information for the video for example
A brutal solution would be to delete the gamelist.xml file and let the console system rebuild it.
In this case, you will probably lose connection with the cropped photos and videos.
I don't know if there is a free tool to do all this.
A good tip is therefore to keep a copy of the original directory on your PC to avoid losing information.
