The Draken and Viggen were so futuristic looking, beautiful designs.

Personally I think both planes look evil. It is like "don´t mess with me". Which I love, because I am a Swede and saw these planes fly by when I was younger. "Those are OUR guys!"
This was by far the best audio I've heard of a Draken afterburner. This is exactly what it sounds like.
yes..amazing
And still you need to crank the volume up to 11, to somehow resemble the absolute devastating tear of eardrums this baby produced!

What a machine and still futuristic looking after all years. Haven't seen one for many years so a real treat thank you from England 👍
Your welcome england!
The clip of Soundgarden-BURDEN In My Hand
Yeah, and I keep looking at it, thinking of how the basic design would suit stealth properties. Saab should do a gripen 2, Skugga Draken.
Intakes always seemed too small for its big tailpipe.😂
@@guaporeturns9472 That's what she said.
I'll share a story told to me by a friend of mine who was a Swedish Air Force engineer in the early 80s:
At one time there were some American F-16 pilots visiting his air base for an exercise. At the time the F-16s were considered very modern, while the J-35s that my friend's squadron had were already getting long in the teeth. He was tasked with escorting one of the Americans across the base and (this was in the winter) they passed a few J-35 parked on the air field, covered with ice, as they had been left outside during the night. Enlisted men were standing on the wings, chopping off the thick ice with iron bars.
"Are those target airplanes for today's live fire exercise?" the F-16 pilot asked.
"No," my friend replied, "that's this mornings patrol, they're flying in 45 minutes."
The F-16 pilot was astounded at their robustness.
Oh well, at least the NEW (not SAAB)F-35 will do better!
Danish ♥ 'murica HOPE (sigh)
F-35 can barely fly in cold weather, already had issues in Finland tests
It is a different league ..... in compare of the tippy tippy flippy american stuff ....
Come and fight in the ice house ......
I like to see them with vector jets ..........

First flight: 25 October 1955 - Still look amazing
If you find yourself in Sweden and happen to be driving: four generations of Saab fighter aircraft are permanently on display along the E4 highway at Linköping ( J-29Tunnan, J-32B Lansen, J-35 Draken, JA-37 Viggen). There are also a Saab 340, a Saab Safir and a Saab 105 in the same lineup. Unfortunately, stopping on the highway and gawking at the planes is illegal, unless you fake some car trouble. Pro tourism tip.
They are just there to get the tourist to turn off at western intersection and visit the military aviation museum. 😁
Yeah there is a Draken in Västerås, it's very cool.
One of the best looking aircraft. Way ahead of its time.
As a Swede I pray the next generation swedish fighter jet will look very similar to the draken but with stealth technology and all the rest modern aviation capabilites to be just as stealthy and lethal as all other 6th generation fighter aircraft in use and equally as capable as the US F35 F22 and russias Su57 and chinas J20. The Gripen is already getting old and since Sweden now is a full nato member we should donate half our Gripen force to Ukriane and begin developing Gripens sucssesor learning how well the Gripen preforms in Ukriane against Russia and taking all that the Gripen does well and bad into the engineering of Swedens next Generation of fighter jets
They have an awesome roar of the afterburner. Saw one take off during my stint in the Swedish air-force in 96'.
Mach 2, supercruise and first to do the Cobra-maneuver. A double Delta wing. A unique beauty.
Supercruise? Are you sure about that?
What does one say? Just awesome beyond belief! This and the Viggen design were seared into my mind at an early age. I had an Airfix Viggen (lovingly painted) hanging on fishing wire from the ceiling of my boyhood bedroom and a diecast metal Drakken. Lovely Swedish jubbly!
🇸🇪🥇 I'm so proud of SAAB manufacturers of -35, -37, -39 models. A country of 7-8 million people back then, makes it really awesome!
Thanks for great audio and video quality
One of my favourite jet airplanes since I was a child. Love the Tunnan, Lansen and especially the Viggen too. Wish German Air Force would have purchased Draken instead of the Starfighter back then. Many lifes could have been saved and the Saab is by far the better multi purpose aircraft.Greetings from Germany.
The mirage was a Option as well
@@pet_er205 Oh, another good option at the time. Far more suitable than the F-104 Thanks for the input. Can you think of a U.S. alternative for the F-104? F-5 was too small, F-4 not a dogfighter really....
@@fatdad64able I think the darken or mirage would be a better option than the f104
@@fatdad64able the only thing taht was really awesome on the F-104 Starfighter was his awesome howling sound..
@@gixxerboy555 I remember seeing them at Ramstein Airshow as a child. Two Bundeswehr Pilots and their "show" was to approach each other head on and avoid collision last second. The only airshow team at Ramstein Flugtag that had me put my hands over my ears because of that howling noise and close my eyes waiting for flaming hell to break loose. They scared the livin' crap out of me. One year they quit showing up. Why, I don't know.
Don’t look like an old plane to me. What a great design.
Especially considering it flew for the first time, 67 years ago in 1955

Yes one masterpiece from Amazing people(germanic) 👍
The most beautiful fighter jet plane ever made.
The plane's design is way ahead of it's time
🎆🎈
At 0:59 for a split second it looks a bit like a Eurofighter. Speaks for it's design
You wouldn't guess it's such an old design!
One of the best looking fighters in my opinion.
Extremely fast and pretty nimble too!
Thank you!
this video reminds me the Soundgarden clip burden in my hand
I grew up close to a sqadron of 35’s and 37’s in Southern Sweden. Remember as a kid seing and hearing those amazing planes thunder away on the flame almost every day. Draken sounds good and has a crackeling afterburner but Viggen is just pure raw thunder like power that felt in the chest. Good times
I built the Revell scale model of this plane back in the early '70s. One of the nicest looking planes ever made IMHO.
I may have builrt a model too and carresed it..
In Austria 🇦🇹 we had this beautiful fighter many years ago and when it flew over our barracks it sounded as if a dragon would sound when he is angry. I think this video was made in Austria/Styria -Zeltweg. Greetings from Austria 🇦🇹🏔⛷🎿🍺🥨🌻🐺 Europe!
Draken means both kite and dragon in swedish :)
Thank you!
👍🏻. Sweden 🇸🇪 should be very proud of this fighter. ✈️
British engine made under licence though.
@@SuperEdge67 Very modified also
We are. I still remember the 80's when one could see dragons in the sky almost daily. Nowadays you are lucky to see a Gripen once ir twice in a year unless you live near a regement.
Great video. As a child, we went many times swimming next to airport where Finnish Air forces were training. It was fun to dive when Draken flew over. You could hear that massive noise clearly while you were in the bottom of the pool.
Always when we travel to Levi ski resort in the Lapland, I remember this since there is one of those Drakens sitting on display in front of Kittilä airport.
What a fine piece of history.
When I saw this plane in pictures I thought nothing of it and actually thought it was a bit ugly. But then I saw it at an airshow in Belgium and was absoluty blown away. Amazing aircraft. So unique for its time
An absolutely beautiful fighter plane, I love the cockpit layout in it. Sure, it's been retired, but it's still competitive.
This thing dances around other jets like a ballerina in war thunder. Fantastic video Paddy, you're elevating the genre.
I can imagine and cant stop laughing at this
Asif surely you haven't seen Migs and SU' s .
Nothing comes close to the RUSSIANS.
@@pieterbezuidenhout2741 Sure
@@pieterbezuidenhout2741 except for sidewinders ;)
@@pieterbezuidenhout2741 granted, it's no Flanker - but those are newer jets. Still, Draken sure did a first Cobra before the Russians did: they learned it from the Swedes
I remember these from the early 80's. Let me tell you they flew close to the ground. You could read the numbers on the belly when they passed over just clear of the barn roof.
Yes the Draken was a massive beast; I heard one roaring once with the full push from its afterburner.
Make no mistake about it, this is a fast jet. The J35 rivals the F-104 in performance, while at the same time boasting a competitive turnrate. From a engineering perspective this is still a very impressive machine.
Safer than the ‘flying coffin’ one would hope?
Marvelous video and an absolutely STUNNING jet. The Swedish historic flight do a marvelous job of preserving the old Swedish Air force birds.
Vår grannens pojkar har gjort detta utmärkt flygplan som jag har personligen sett här i Tammerfors och Härmälä !
That afterburner is NOT fucking around. When it really got going at about 0:45 my jaw dropped. Really well shot too, great camera control!
Thanks
While attending an air show in Örebro Sweden a few years back, an restored all bare metal two seater Draken flew by, showing of it's double delta wing, my son said, it looks like a Starwars ship, and yes it's amazing to realize that the J-35 Draken first flew back in 1955.
This is some of the best footage I've seen to date!
This is so patriotic for us swedess, thank you dude, you're a good man for posting this in these trying times.
Are there any native Swedes left? The native Swedes that built this beautiful plane above are being replaced at break neck speed by peoples that will never have the ability to produce such excellence.
@@vanillaexplosion99 Well, it is due to our current non military or peoples focused political party, if we were to choose a more military/people focused party, we would probably start developing tanks and aircraft again, I just wish for it to be true, but with the current view on our country, it is veeeeery unlikely, as a native swede, I confirm this message.
The most brutal cold war fighter there will ever be
I would maybe argue that the English electric lighting has that title, many flaws but brutal would describe it well especially if on the receiving end! At the very least at least an equal
@@timnvrmind8108 the f 14 tomcat is not a bad choice either
As a kid I built a lot of scale model aircraft. My two absolute favourites were the Viggen and Draken .The Draken for me is still the most amazing jet fighter ever built. That shape!!!! . It's like something out of a Batman movie.!!! I think that even today that shape is still light years ahead of everything except the SR71.
Those old time designers really had souls.
I made the Airfix model of this many, many years ago, it's been one of my favourite aircraft ever since. Beautiful machine !
Me too! And I wondered how it would fly… ? Of course it flies like a dream! Once upon a time Sweden had hundereds of these…
All the Swedish jets are works of art
When I first saw draken, I thought it was a brand new fighterjet aircraft. The design just makes it look soooo modern.
You can feel the thrust vibration from the after burner in the soundtrack!!!
Imagine having two engines side by side like this, that would be awesome.
An impressive display,.🙂👍
Люди к чему все это ,,может пожать друг другу руку
F4 Phantom, A5 Vigilante, Lighting all have 2 engines of similar size.
Uno de los aviones más hermosos de la historia de la aviación,una verdadera belleza, junto al Berkut son mis preferidos.
If I'm not mistaken, SAAB took an off the shelf JT8 PWA commercial jet engine, designed an afterburner for it, and that is where the engine was derived from. Today, with a pair of canards on the forward air intake, modern electronics, the Viggen would be a VERY manuverable competetor to everything out there! I'm always impressed with the Swedish aerospace industry. Glad the keep this Viggen airworthy.
I mean DRAKEN in my previous post....Dugh...(too early in the am I guess)
ITS DESIGN IS 100 YEARS AHEAD OF ITS TIME 👍👍👍👍👍👍
This fighter looks like it could have been designed now. What a beautiful plane.
The first flight for j35 draken was in 1955
60 years old. Heavy!!
Saw them nearly daily flying as a child and teen in Austria. We lived near an army Airport. 🇸🇪 🇦🇹 💪
I remember as a kid in the 80's when Drakens flew over, everyone instantly recognized them.
The most beutifull fighter of all times!
Had the privilege of watching a couple of these doing circuits and your some really steep.climbouts at RAF Withering '88 ish. They looked like something not from this planet. Amazing.
Wow, it's shocking to hear that engine at full blast! DRAKKEN ROCKS!!!!
Saab 35 Draken had one unusual trick: It could reach supercruise (speed over Mach 1) without using afterburner.
This is not the only jet that can do this trick, the FA22 raptor also has super cruise as well
@Cobradriver99 in smarter every day's vide they show that because the air is thinner higher up the speed of sound is lower. They said something like "oh look up higher up we are acrually supercrusing a bit right now"
Btw the bell x1-x15 should also be on the list cuz rockets dont have afterburners
All these aircrafts listed below needs afterburner to reach speed over Mach 1.0 and can then turn the afterburner off and maintain supercuise. As far as I know, Draken is the only aircraft that does not need afterburner to pass the speed of sound. Please correct me if I’m wrong 🤔
@Blue Amy Ok, I am misinformed, I will take that claim back, sorry.
@@ahmadtheaviationlover1937 Draken is a 1955 design. F22 is a 1990 design.
I have not seen this plane in real since I was a child, probably 40 or so years ago.. I don't know what show I was on.. But I think it was on Bromma airfield in Stockholm. I remember standing weirdly close to where it was passing over us.. and that sound... Man, I can feel/remember the powerful vibrations in my chest again when I hear that engine in this video.. It was like it came from inside the chest. Exciting and terrifying at the same time. Thank you so much for that journey back in time..
As a swede this makes me proud :>
The Draken is quite maneuverable even at higher speeds, I've never seen it like this before.
indeed. yet the when the pilots where given the viggen. they were stunned by how "easy" it was to out turn a draken in 1 on 1.
@@Mornomgir Well, the Draken was primarily designed as an interceptor during an era the consensus was that the era of dogfight was well and truly over.
Always loved the Draken.
My first encounter with this aircraft was as a 9 year old minding my own business playing in the back garden when an Austrian Air Force Draken came screaming overhead low out of nowhere, it terrified me but I fell in love with it at the same time.
This was in 1995 when the Austrians deployed a squadron to RAF Waddington to use the North Sea ACMI range. That same year between April and May there were Luftwaffe F4's, French Air Force Mirage 2000C's, Belgian F16's, Royal Navy Sea Harriers and RAF Tornado F3's! The Austrians brought the Drakens back over in '97 and 2002, it went quiet for a long time but the past few years have seen operation Cobra Warrior being hosted at Waddington so the air is filled with the sound of fighters every April and September again.
Thanks for the GREAT footage!! This aircraft is such a BEAST!! I saw one for sale a while back.. Wonder if it's still available.. Haha.. Keep up the GREAT work good sir!! You always produce top notch footage for us to enjoy! 👍👍
