  • The Reface DX can actually do a fairly accurate resynthesis of analog style pulse width modulation -- taking a square wave to a narrow pulse and back - under the control of a LFO or EG. This video shows an example.
    Also, get the patch here on Soundmondo: soundmondo.yamahasynth.com/vo...
    A few things -- the basic square wave that the Reface produces isn't very "square". Truth be told, neither are alot of them on many classixc analog synths. The key is that the 50% pulse wave, aka "square" has only odd harmonics present, and that subsquent pulse waves created have the nth order harmonics missing for the duty cyle of 1/n. Meaning a 1/4 width pulse wave is missing all the 4th order hamonics (4, 8, 12, etc).
    On Reface DX I'm relying on a back door to Operator phase control, as shown in the video. To 100% create controllable PWM you need to modulate a square wave carrier with a sawtooth wave modulator what is 90 degrees out of phase from the carrier. The modulation index then controls the pulse width You can do exactly this on the SY99/77 as shown here:

    Similarly, the FS1r and Montage are capable of doing this as well. The "All" spectral waves (the sawtooth wave spectrum) can be used to modulate the "Odd" waves as the process of 'Skirt' to increase the harmonics creates phase shifts in the wave that are close to the 90 degree sweet spot to create the PWM effect. Plus each Operator has it's own Pitch EG to refine with the pitch blip trick.

    Love this patch! Fills a major missing gap in the factory presets. Thanks for making this tutorial, a lot of the "tricks" of FM synthesis are a lot less obvious than what I've learned in the subtractive world...

      Glad you found it useful! Many things work quite very differently between analog subtractive and FM synthesis, and I think that's why many struggle with FM.

      Throw some chorus and a nice reverb on it and float off to lush city. Remember to get the patch from Soundmondo!

    Just a couple of weeks ago I was referencing some of your articles on the MODX/Montage series and trying to apply the way you had created PWM there to the Reface. With some relative success. So nice to have you address this on the Reface itself.

      I would love it if you could continue to share more patches with Reface. I've already devoured everything that's on your channel as well as your article series on the Yamaha website. It's the synth that really got me to dive deep into FM synthesis and I find it such a joy to program.

      @@seleniticdawn So glad you found them useful! The Reface DX is a great place the start with FM as it's a good interface, 'easy' on the surface but deeper than one might expect.

    Great Video! Thank You. One question, is there a way to do Osc Sync with FM?

    • @DrSynth
      @DrSynth  7 місяців тому +1

      yes, but not on the RefaceDX. See my other video ua-cam.com/video/VNippzAL_jk/v-deo.html the modulator has to be a rising Sawtooth wave, and then the mod index controls the depth of the sync effect.
