Synth Stuff Ep. 31 - Yamaha Reface DX

  • Two episodes in one day? Consider it my thanks for 500 subs and one year of Synth Stuff! Because of my experience with FM synthesis (teaching/programming) Yamaha sent me a Reface DX a few years ago to make patches for their patch sharing website long before I ever started Synth Stuff. Yes, it has mini keys, but I will say it has the most solid feeling mini keys. If you want a hardware FM synth that has keys (not a module) then this is the one I recommend. I can program my DX7, but this is easier and the built in effects are great. Plus...it's kinda cute. Some people complain about this being 4 operator instead of 6 and yet don't know what an operator is. Some complain it doesn't have multiple waveforms, but that defeats the purpose of FM synthesis. All of the patches are you hear are just some of the ones I've created and YOU can get them for YOUR Reface DX in the link below.

      I’ve recently purchased a Yamaha reface cs from sweetwater. Phenomenal sounding synthesizer. And the reface dx sounds awesome too. Check out the korg volca fm if you wanted the same synth at an affordable price.

    Awesome demo. \m/ Yamaha makes killer synthesizers. I’ve recently purchased a Yamaha reface cs and it sounds phenomenal. And this synth sounds phenomenal too. I do own a Korg volca fm(which is similar to the Yamaha reface dx). But I wouldn’t mind buying a Yamaha reface dx as a back up.

    i love this synth so much, ut really is like a cleaner 80s synth, its unique sound is a kind of "new - retro" , that im yet to hear anywhere else, it has a distinct watery feel to it too, sometimes i consider getting another synth , but i really think this does all i need :^)

    Really wish they would do a full size reface line. Even if it's on a four octave keyboard with full size keys.

    • @mgabrysSF
      @mgabrysSF 4 роки тому +3

      Lots of MIDI controllers out there of all price-ranges and key-lenghts - plus-control options, but reaching a mini next to it isn't that hard either. For a space and cost savers, minis, boutiques and MIDI controllers can't be beat.

    • @jmalmsten
      @jmalmsten 4 роки тому

      It does have midi in so... At least you can feed it midi signals and have it be "only" a sound generator.
      Would it be neater to have a full sized single unit? Probably. But the option is there for those who crave the bigger keys.

    • @Gainn
      @Gainn 4 роки тому

      @@jmalmsten The reface units would have been epic in desktop versions (maybe with an optional keyboard dock like the boutiques, but more octaves.) They're OK if you just want one, but they would be far more practical that way if you want more than one of them.

    • @jarkokoo
      @jarkokoo 5 років тому +1

      Yup. I've started to think, that a FM-synth, whether it's a DX, Digitone or some similar device, is almost a must have piece of gear to own. It compliments analog gear so well and thus makes one's setup more well rounded for all kinds of sound shaping.

    I share none of those complaints mentioned in the description coming from a 25 key controller. I learned to make extensive use out of just 2 octaves + plus octave switching on the fly. It's amazing how much attitude you can achieve when you're forced to work within restriction. That being said, my only complaint is that there's no modulation lever to go with the pitch bend!!! 😫

    I've been considering what my next synth will be ... I'd researched about the Reface DX, and a lot of people were saying that an original DX7 is far better, but I have to admit, the Reface DX has a lot of capability, and that is certainly proven here. Thanks for the inspiration! I think I just might invest in the Yamaha Reface DX. I love the sounds demonstrated here, and BTW, nice playing!

    • @tritonrecordings
      @tritonrecordings  6 років тому +1

      It's cool to have the real deal, original DX7. But if someone said I can only have ONE keyboard for FM sounds, I'd take the Reface.

    • @fender1000100
      @fender1000100 5 років тому

      The DX7 isnt better its just LEGENDRY. People ride on that name. Ive played a DX7 for 27 years (CHECK MY CHANNEL) And ive played this. And its apples and oranges. Each has their strengths. If you want a truly great FM synth though with 4 OP and full sized keys 5 octaves. I recommend the DX11. It is AWESOME. Some of the sounds that synth can produce are INCREDIBLE. It mixes more analogue type waveforms with fm. And the results are breathtaking. It has the best organ and non sampled acoustic piano sounds you will ever hear too.
      The REFACE DX is a close 2nd. But Yamaha need to take the demand for a modern day FM synth seriously. And give us a new DX7 with a much friendlier user interface like the DX. And a full sized version of this 4 OP gem.

    And some people doesn't even know the four oscillators in this have bi-polar feedback, where as the DX-7 has only one uni-polar feedback oscillator (and with only 8 levels available VS the +/-127 of the Reface).
    I hate that it doesn't have separate controls for delay feedback and time though. Stupid trend IMO :(

      @tritonrecordings  6 років тому +2

      Javi G that's right, feedback on each operator is handy. I do wish they'd move to standard ADSR envelopes, that's my only gripe.

    • @javiceres

    • @robbpeppertree
      @robbpeppertree 4 роки тому +1

      After looking it up... The Vocla FM has 6 operators, this has 4 operators (comparable to the DX11 and TX81Z). The Vocla can only do 3 notes at a time. So it's like a muscle car with only reverse gear.
      I just decided on the Reface DX, between this, and the Vocla FM. I like 7th and 9th chords too much.

      CS has no save ability unless you use a computer or an app. Pretty crap omission, really. But it does have more hands on control and better analogue emulation.
      DX is far more versatile, especially sound scapes and traditional instruments, and it has 32 save slots, which is better for live work recall.
      Get either, then save up for the other or... Get a second hand Akai Miniak and blow all the refaces away... and with consummate ease!
