How to "PWM" on an FM synthesizer (Reface DX)

- Here's another response video to a viewer's question. Here's how to emulate Pulse Width Emulation (PWM) on an FM synthesizer, in this case the Reface DX. This is not real Pulse Width Modulation - it's a phase modulation that sounds somewhat similar to PWM. Hope this helps. :-)

Some bands / artists I've been following for a long time are (among others) Massive Attack, Pink Floyd, Pet Shop Boys, Archive, A-Ha, Yes, Porcupine Tree, John Mellencamp, Jean-Michel Jarre, Metallica, Peter Gabriel and Perturbator. So my music will kind of sound like those (without ever reaching the greatness of those artists, of course). :-)
PLEASE watch this fantastic video by @DrSynth which creates true, controllable PWM on the DX. ua-cam.com/video/JaVUn0adV-E/v-deo.html
Beautiful. Thank you for the pwm
Fyi Sysex first command is 43 10 7f 1c 05
Was able to map all controls to a Novation sl mk 2 and have some real time lfo , envelope , ratio, pitch control, feedback, etc controls all at once time!
Nice tip! I've also done pseudo-FM on the DX by adding two carriers (with lots of positive feedback to make them "saw waves") and slightly detuning them.
Thanks for watching! The detuned saws are an all time favourite for sure.
Great video, Floyd! I have been thinking about getting another FM but I have quite a few digital IPad FMs and some ancient Yamaha’s and I’m not done with them yet! I want a PSR 4900 because when I was a kid I wanted one then and couldn’t afford one. They were over 2k and now I can get one for $100 or close. They are not a useful arranger anymore and I’ll probably change my mind with something that is but we will see! Peace!
Genius 😮
Thanks! It's still a workaround, though. :-) (For the "real" thing, please watch the video I pinned here)
Thank you so much!
No problem! It's not "true" PWM. For that, a little bit more trickery with the phases of the operators would be needed - but the sound impression is pretty close in my opinion.
Thanks for the tutorial! Unfortunately there are only few FM-synthesis tutorials that go beyond the basics
There are some videos around which show some advanced tricks. But they tend to be super short or super long ;)
Bravo!!
Thanks!
Great video. 👍
Thanks 👍It's not "true" PWM - for that, it'd be nice to be able to move the phase of the operators around. But it's pretty close.
Yes! You are my fm/dx hero man! Thanks for this🦾🤖🦾
Thanks for watching! :)
I give video a rating of 5 Nick Batts out of 5! 😁 Would this work on my old FB-01?
Sure thing! On a "traditional" fm synth, begin with a normal sinewave carrier. Stack the fixed frequency modulator on top of that and then add another regular modulator on top of that. Then adjust the loudness to your needs.
@@mr_floydst Thanks, i will have to get an editor for it and try! It would be the same algorithm as in your example?
That's correct - same Algorithmn.
Or you can just use an Opsix, which already has square waves built in... Then you can FM your squares!
Thanks for your feedback - I used square waves here as well, but OP6 is the superior synth no doubt.
Can we save our patch ?
Yes, the RDX has 32 storage slots for patches.
Tip #1: How to make Sony PS1 device intro bass line?
Ha! You're right! :-)
I got into console gaming _very_ late so I never noticed that.
hey that's a neat oscilloscope.
Can You make an oscilloscope tutorial with the 4$ Raspberry Pi PICO? or any RASP PI?
also, Thank You for making videos. your delivery is great. I particularly enjoy Your tracker/Sunvox content as well
Thank you very much!
