After 9 years I still come back and watch this playthrough. If you did a monthly Mage Knight scenario play on this channel I have to believe it would be extremely popular. I know I would be waiting patiently for each video just like I did nearly a decade ago

Ahh yes, even 5 years later, this is still the gold standard of board gaming playthroughs. I'm pretty sure you ignited an entire youtube genre with this series. Soooo many other people doing playthroughs now - and I bet 95% of them started because of this very series.

So I FINALLY picked a copy of this game up...and after unboxing it and
watching a couple of play throughs...I've come to a sudden realization.
I'mma need a bigger house to play this in...

It has been 7 years since I first watched these videos and learned to play this game. It was my #1 game until this year, and that is because I haven't played recently. It was a pure pleasure back then to be taught this wonderful game by you, and led to many years of fun (borderline obsessively?) playing solo board games. So I'm back trying to recapture some of that early spirit, as well as brush up on the rules and mindset of the game that you so expertly capture.
By today's bg playthrough content standards, this 2-hour playlist seems extremely concise. And I don't think it's the content creators. I think recent solo games (at least the ones generating the majority of solo bg playthrough videos) tend to skew heavily toward longer play time/more content/campaign-centric/inclusion of narrative. Mage Knight doesn't feel like a "big game" anymore.

that's a great observation. Back in 2012 we really had to hunt out great solo games; now the market has changed so very much. We are truly spoiled for choice !

    Hi Ricky,
Thank you very much for your Mage Knight videocasts. I've played quite a number of boardgames in my time and taught quite a few to others but no game had me quite as stumped as Mage Knight. I've no idea how you managed to get to the bottom of the rules of this byzantine game but you did and because of you I am now playing and relishing its complexity.
    Thanks mate, you're a star!

I recreated your game and played along to your videos, it makes everything way easier to understand. I'm going to play "First Reconnaissance" again on my own this time, thank you so much.
Also, for everyone else starting out, if you have the Ultimate Edition, keep in mind that one of the cards in each character deck has been changed, so if you do what I did and play along to this video, you may find a few different cards, they have almost the same effects as the ones in the regular edition, but they have been changed to better represent each Mage Knight abilities.
Also, some of the text in the cards has been simplified and the cards you have to take out of the decks are the same, but are numbered differently in Ultimate Edition so, you have to remove cards 81 to 92 and 109 to 112.
Thanks again for this fantastic series, can't wait to check out your playthroughs of the expansion sets.

Walkthrough only states to remove 81-92, nothing about 109-112.

Thank you for identifying the card changes in UE by the UE numbers. The card removals take place at 2:37 and 3:10 in this walkthrough.
It looks like in UE, Improvisation was replaced by Instinct in the Tovak deck. It looks like Tranquility was replaced by Rejuvenate in the Norowas deck. Those are just two I’ve noticed so far.

  • @ThielComedy
    @ThielComedy 5 років тому +32

Just an FYI if you have the Ultimate Edition the card numbers are different. Remove 109 - 112 and 81 - 92.

You can play with 4 that way just fine... the problem though is that you will have the lack of challenge not using a dummy player. The aim of dummy is to act as
a clock. Therefore I would suggest you houserule in a clock (e.g. max 4 turns per round), otherwise you can go real slow and make the game last ages and give yourselves more of an advantage than intended. Or, if you are learning, feel free to play that way, it will still work just fine. You'll need to use adv locations to gain more fame

Hey Ricky - any chance you might be interested in making an overview video for those who have played renegade and are interested in mage knight? i.e. 'mage knight for renegade players' - I LOVE LOVE LOVE renegade and found a cheap copy of mage knight so it's on my shelf and I'm trying to learn how to play it. I hear there are similarities so a video using renegade as a touch point for explaining mage knight might be really helpful.
If you're into it you could do a video the other direction too, i.e. 'renegade for mage knight players'

Hi, thank you for your comment! Wow, there's an ambitious thought. There are some similarities in the puzzle-like nature of using your hand. My hunch is that more people will be coming the other direction.. Mage Knight has a much bigger audience.

you could, yes. use co-op rules for a team of 2 and competitive rules for the two teams working against eachother. Good idea ! :)

Hi, I enjoyed this video. The font you use at the end of the video, it immediately reminded me of Goldeneye 007on the N64. I know it's a long shot but that wouldn't be deliberate, would it?

I have a question regarding battles with monsters. I failed to defeat a monster in the monster den. Do I stay on the tile or move back to where I came from?

***** You stay on the monster den hex. The monster den is hidden in a cave, and you can end your movement there without going in to fight, or exit leaving the monster undefeated. The thing to remember with monster dens is, once you go in and fight the beast, if you come out leaving it undefended, the monster stays there and everyone now knows what it is.

Okay I was confused and can't seem to find anything online about it. I know if you fail to defeat the fortified sites you'll have to move back to where you had attacked. Thanks again for the clarification.

So this game is now a 'classic' for solo board games. I have played Pathfinder TCG some, and LOTR LCG some. I think I like Pathfinder better, because its closer to playing AD&D games, like Baldur's Gate, where you can create a character and progress its skills and such. LOTR does't have any of that aspect. How does Mage Knight stack up to those two games, in your opinion?

I think Mage Knight is better for me; Mage Knight hits a special sweet spot for the kind of puzzle it presents for solo gaming. This is why I love it so much. I love the crunchiness of the analysis.

It's like listening to Gordon Ramsay and Bob Ross teach me how to play some weird board game
