I know this will not be a popular statement to say, but I think Tupac coming to Death Row was the beginning of the end for the label. Think about all of the artists that were on Death Row, the greatest producer in Hip-Hop history { Dr. Dre } iconic artists like Snoop Dogg, and more. When Pac came to the label he bought a lot of talent and passion but also a lot of negativity. His actions beef'in with the East coast separated him from the other artist on Death Row and Dr.Dre. Pac's beef was not theirs, but he wanted them to back him up, many refused. A number of Death Row artist album releases were put on hold because of Pac and that changed the morale of the label, a number of those albums were definitely going gold or platinum or better. Pac getting into the fight in Vegas { which was not his beef } led to Shug going to jail, and with Dre no longer at the label, it truly began to crumble. If Pac never came to Death Row, the label would still be around to this day, and very successful.

Alot of stuff in this video is cap, the idea that Suge and Pac went about being feared and claiming that Pac wasn't from the streets is suched a old and tired take. They were literally forming a East Coast verison of their label and were gonna put on acts that included artists that New York themselves threw away.
@@ntwpodcast4100 tupac was influencial because he was from brookyln then moved to los angeles when he was 14 he was able to mix the new york style and los angeles sytle of rap very well....hes the only one was able to without it coming off forced
You could do one of these on every influential black record label and they'd all boil down to one thing- the label stopped paying the producers who were responsible for their sound. Death Row could've continued with Dre and no Pac or Snoop.
Aside from Suge, Stunt #2 really messed Death Row up because at one point they had not only Bow Wow, Crooked I and Danny Boy, but Mark "Return of the Mack" Morrison. Imagine how more successful their international fame would be if his album was never shelved.
A major problem with Death Row is that they didn’t know how to let more than one person shine at the same time. People’s shit got put on hold to cater to Snoop, then to 2Pac. We could’ve gotten Rage’s album sooner, which would’ve been bigger if it dropped before 1997. We should’ve gotten more from Tha Dogg Pound. J-Flexx should’ve had an album on Death Row, the Helter Skelter album…etc. Putting everything behind 2Pac wasn’t a solid long-term move even if he didn’t get killed. By all means, Pac was the general, but that’s not a reason not to have strong soldiers able to support the label.
The real reasons why Death Row Records fell apart is because first Dr. Dre the main producer and the one who oversaw the other artists careers left. Then 2Pac who had just became the main superstar of the label died, Suge Knight then got locked up from 1997 - 2001 so he wasn't able to manage the label properly and the careers of the other artists that were there, plus the new ones that came in and he had to release a lot of old material from previous artists without their permission to keep the label from going bankrupt, which it did anyways. Snoop Doggy Dogg the last main star of the label ended up having beef with Suge Knight/Death Row and left the label and went over to No Limit Records and finally Daz Dillinger another main producer that helped the careers of others left the label soon after
Let's not forget outside of Pac & Snoop, they had Tha Dogg Pound, DJ Quik, Nate Dogg & Rage. They just didn't get enough time to fully develop with the label & reach their full potential. But Dogg Food & Safe & Sound were both commercially & critically successful albums. Love this content bro. Keep em coming
I can't believe that almost thirty years later, new pressings of The Chronic still have the lame 'Executive Produced by Suge Knight' credit slapped over the original 'Produced by Dr. Dre' credit. Now that they're owned by Hasbro, they might as well just slap a Transformer over it. Because that's how childish Suge was being when he changed it in the first place.
Pac was the hottest thing on that label. Suge ain't got time to find someone else that could compete with pac. Pac wasn't even with them for a year and he has cranked out multiple albums. Im sure Suge was overwhelmed by his work ethic and thought he hit the ultimate jackpot. An actor as well as a rapper.Every record mogul has that one star that is the face of the label. Suge had 3. Dre, Snoop and Pac. Tommy motola wasn't trying to find someone that could compete with Mariah Carey. Clive Davis was not trying to find someone that could compete with Whitney. Epic records was not trying to find someone to compete with Michael Jackson. Once you have that main star, you run with it and let the competition worry about trying to find their version of what you already got.
Thank God that Ice Cube NEVER, EVER sign to Death Row at all!! He was in his own lane like he is today. Dr. Dre leaving Death Row was his recovery from all that mess for what was happening before 2Pac passed away.
2pac said himself, Dr Dre didn't do much work. DeathRow row didn't need Dre. They had Daz Dillinger, Johnny J and great producers. The demise of 2pac was too big and a massive hit in the company itself.
Lmao shit if thats the case, why was Dre the one who continued on starting from scratch all over again and succeeded? I don’t remember Daz having timeless classic albums under his belt executive produced by him..
The prime example of when keeping it real goes wrong. Also the Deathrow era is without a doubt the most overrated label in rap history. We're literally talking about a label that no artist had a 2 album winning streak.

I disagree about Bow Wow. Having a kid artist, even if successful, wouldve been perceived as a joke due to their hardcore image. Crossroads and Gangsta’s Paradise were huge hits for BTNH and Coolio. But I would argue that they did more harm than good in the long term. Those songs abandoned their core audience and attracted a “pop” audience. Once they were seen as pop artists, their core artists stopped following. Since the pop audience follows whatever the core audience thinks is cool, eventually the pop audience stopped following as well. This couldve had a similar effect at Death Row. It worked in Ruthless Records favor that JJ Fad hit before NWA. Remember, NWA received a lot of flack for their involvement with Michel’le.

My favorite label of all time, though they only had about 5 years in the game. This is a really sad episode as far as I’m concerned
Dang only 5 years as a label and people still talk about them today
At least their t shirt with the logo on it still sells like hot cakes lol. That's like the Nirvanna and Rolling Stones logo and I never see people wear Bad Boy merch despite them lasting longer in the rap game.
At some point please do Saigon.
You did a dope job with the Stack Bundles one... Saigon was dubbed the next Nas. I feel like lack luster promotion, mismanagement , and Love and Hip-Hop to name a few things, played a major part in his stunned role
I agree n disagree cuz Tha fedz was already on dey line fa da Snoop shit n gangsta rap. Pac already had his own fed platform so it jus heightened it in a major way

Pac still brought DR to new heights

Alot of stuff in this video is cap, the idea that Suge and Pac went about being feared and claiming that Pac wasn't from the streets is suched a old and tired take. They were literally forming a East Coast verison of their label and were gonna put on acts that included artists that New York themselves threw away.
Facts.
He certainly wasn’t from the streets like Orlando was
That’s not a comparison. They were both street. One sold drugs and ended up a musician.. the other ended up a terror to his community.

I see you doing labels too. Keep up the grind my boy
You could do one of these on every influential black record label and they'd all boil down to one thing- the label stopped paying the producers who were responsible for their sound. Death Row could've continued with Dre and no Pac or Snoop.

He most definitely was from the streets
He wasn't a "gangster" and never claimed to be
Aside from Suge, Stunt #2 really messed Death Row up because at one point they had not only Bow Wow, Crooked I and Danny Boy, but Mark "Return of the Mack" Morrison. Imagine how more successful their international fame would be if his album was never shelved.
And Mc Hammer
Watching this on Pacs untimely passing anniversary 🙏🏽 Rest Easy
Can you imagine how massive Death Row would be now, in this day and age?
Would love to see a Pharcyde Stunted Growth
Damn bro, that was great. You seem like we grew up same era. Great history lessons
Dope video....

Great episode you should do no limit next 🔥
Your sports series brought me here and both deserve over a million Subs
My grand father coached Marion on his pop Warner football team ,and I still have the house over there in Compton
Gave us many classy, flashy, showy, and talented acts
Do Immortal Technique next
I tried to tell suge to chill with all that gangster shit and handle business but he never listened smh

The prime example of when keeping it real goes wrong. Also the Deathrow era is without a doubt the most overrated label in rap history. We're literally talking about a label that no artist had a 2 album winning streak.

They could’ve got a classic album out of Lady Of Rage, Warren G, Sam Sneed, Kurupt Solo, Nate Dogg and the Dr. Dre/Ice Cube album that got scrapped but they fumbled it. Who knows how many of the upcoming artists even from different areas who would’ve signed there if it wasn’t so reckless and non professional. Good video. Thanks.
Is kurupt & daz next???
