  • Take the course to learn how to recover from chronic dizziness. It's NEWLY UPDATED and free. thesteadycoach.com/free-course
My guest today, Lisa Schlosberg, LMSW, is a powerhouse and an expert on diet and weight loss through a mind body lens. She's here to school us on migraine diets, all things related to regaining trust in your body as you're recovering from medically unexplained chronic dizziness symptoms, and weight loss during recovery. We talk about why migraine and elimination diets are NOT a "benign" intervention and can actually totally backfire and make recovery more difficult. We also talk about Lisa's view that you need to shift how you see your body in order to create safety. This is a fascinating, far-reaching conversation and I can't wait to hear what you think.

This could not have come at a better time!!! She spoke to so much of my current insecurities around food and how it contributes to feeling safe/unsafe. Before dizziness my constant worry was weight loss and diet/exercise and after I’ve been trying to just be okay with me and where I am and what i look like while mindfully eating and exercising but losing that structure constantly has me anxious. So glad to have her podcast now to listen to on this in more depth

Wow! Love this way of understanding self as separate from body. So profound. It seems obvious but it wasn’t until pointed out. Thank you. This goes way beyond diet.

I have been on a migraine diet for nearly 20 years. How do i go forward and eat the ‘banned’ foods without fear of causing symptoms? Feeling unsafe around these foods is so ingrained in me 😉

Whew, what a great question. I think you can't stop having an initial fear, but you can change your relationship with fear. Have you ever read Claire Week's books? She explains this really well. Your job isn't to STOP fear, but rather not be afraid of it and learn to work with it constructively. For some people, this is just a change in thinking ("Oh! I see the fear but I don't need to afraid because this is wrong."). For others, it takes a little more practice.

I agree… it would be helpful to hear how to work through adding foods back that were eliminated and our brains see as triggers. I can say the reaction to the food is real and yes maybe it’s a subconscious thing happening but what we feel is real. I can say within 20 minutes of eating a food like yogurt I am dizzy…. So how do we change that

Hey Dr. Yonit. My dizziness is finally getting better since last august. But now I haven’t been able to breathe and constipated and it seems like histamine intolerance could have started all this. I found a tick on a month before all this started, but I was also I was horribly stressed and anxious. I guess what I am asking is do I get tested for tick born illness? Is that too late now? My dizziness now seems to come in waves more now because I am so worried about breathing. I do know that I need to quit drinking alcohol and I know I was low on magnesium.

Hey Dr yonit... I have a question I wanted to ask that I started doing somatic tracking for my dizziness 2 to 3 days ago and it's flared up my symptoms and dizziness a lot. I wanted to ask that is this normal and would the symptoms improve if I continue doing this or not?? Thankyou so much in advance

This is normal- when people start paying more attention to symptoms, this can lead to higher symptoms. Please watch this video to make sure you're somatic tracking correctly, too! ua-cam.com/video/pMNYwd3iMbU/v-deo.html

I am not sure where to ask this but has anyone ever mentioned Hormones and CD/PPD. Before PPPD got fully activated I would have some bouts of wonkyness during parts of my cycle and now in perimenopause full on almost menopause is when the PPPD became 24/7. I know that my history cptsd/mother line etc are the core roots but just wondering.

Do you ladies think food allergies are legitimate? I was tested for some food allergies and found out I had a severe gluten intolerance. Thoughts? 🥰😍🤩

    • @TheSteadyCoach
      @TheSteadyCoach  3 місяці тому +1

Food sensitivities are real- but some tests are not legit, rather look for antibodies that do not correlate with clinical outcomes. And I’m not convinced that all sensitivities are a forever thing. The immune system is plastic too.

    I have a few thoughts:
    - Neither of you live with this, right? So you don't *actually* know what it feels like to feel very limited with alternative treatments.
    - Lots of people try a migraine diet without having hyperfixation and eating disorders....and they improve significantly. To deny it isn't a helpful treatment for some is just irresponsible. A migraine diet was actually the final piece that got me to 100% dizzy free days and helped me get to vestibular migraine remission.
    - You all chose to focus on people's poor experiences - can you imagine doing that with every migraine treatment? No one would try anything. A migraine diet is used temporarily to help someone discover potential food triggers. Which are very real. It's not labeling foods as good/bad. The biggest issue here is people don't have support on how to try it in a fun and healthy way. The vestibular providers I work with now are really trying to give more of that support.
    - Trying a migraine diet often gets people cooking more at home again, which gets them making recipes for their families and actually enjoying food. I actually see a lot of people find joy and loving themselves again through it - myself included.
    - I have zero fears of food and still react to some of my migraine triggers, even now that I have dizzy free days. Are you telling me that it's "all in my head?" because that's what this comes off as.
Maybe we just see different audiences, but this could be better catered to those who do have issues with food vs. the vestibular migraine community as a whole.

Hi dizzy cook.. Seems I remember when I read your story of how it all started for you was a horrible work environment where you were bullied constantly and treated bad.. Then your dizziness started...and I believed you also mentioned panic attacks too, sounds like you were under a tremendous amount of stress at the time.. Most of the people with neural circuit dizziness started out being under terrible duress and stress prier too. Not to say that you don't have vestibular migraines. Just saying when I read your story you sounded like the classic case for neural circuit dizziness...

Hi Alicia, I have enjoyed your work as well as Dr. Yo and Lisa and think that there is a place for all in this healing journey. During an interview you did with Dr. Beh I recall him saying that what makes a big difference in healing is a positive attitude. (I believe he has been your mentor no?) It was him saying this that led me to this work that has been very helpful to me. Your diet is very complex and began making me fear food. I know it has helped many people and that is great. You are a lovely role model for vestibular migraine peeps but many of us get help here too. ❤

@@JMac-1244 Hey, I think you're misunderstanding what I'm saying. Dr. Yo's work here is important, it's why I was watching too and refer a lot of people here. Your experience is just as valid as mine. This video was disappointing. It didn't present both sides, but painted an incredibly negative one-sided picture. If we are presented negative information about certain treatments, it affects our thoughts, as you've stated here. I'm trying to present a positive experience with it so people know it's not all bad. And from someone that has LIVED it. There are a lot of pathways to healing (definitely not just one) and they need to all be presented to the patient to make the right choice for them.
They didn't even address the alternative migraine diets out there either, which don't even require elimination (the one Dr Beh and I worked on). Finally this isn't "my diet", it's from John's Hopkins. I just make recipes to help people avoid the situation you were in.

@@TheDizzyCook even Dr Beh mentioned medications and diets could have a placebo effect... He even mentioned in his book that childhood trauma could cause it. He told my friend that he thought hers started when her mother passed. He was my Dr for a few visits.. Mine definitely started from stress and emotional trauma from childhood...just saying.. The brain is powerful..
