I can always tell when my brain isn't functioning correctly while driving when after about 4 min into driving I stop at the stop light and look at a certain spot on the street and the street is still moving forward. ( SCARY!) At that time I tell myself ( COME ON BODY FIGHT THIS FEELING 3Xs) it takes about 3-5 minutes before I feel better and it doesn't always work. Any type of anxiety before driving makes it worse. I wish everyone living with this the best because it's a horrible way to live! We all have to drive, unless your rich enough to have a limo everyday. More needs to be done to find a cure.

When I’m driving, the worse part is having to sit at stop lights, or other situations where I can’t just go. I couldn’t figure out why the stopping was making me so agitated and worsening my symptoms. I think now from listening to your video that’s it’s a few things: the brain not doing great at switching templates between movement and stillness, and feelings of being dependent on other people and being trapped. Thank you so much for that insight.

Symptoms started for me after having a bout with neuro lyme disease. My sensory perceptions were totally out of whack. It somewhat resolved after treatment, but not completely, and when I have a flare, riding in the car exacerbates the dizziness, nausea and weird out-of-body feeling. We live in a rural area where getting anywhere necessitates driving windy and rough back roads and all that jostling is horrid.

My wife gets very anxiety filled while riding in a car or driving because of a car accident that has caused these dizziness issues 9 years ago. Thank you for talking about this in your video. She is going to learn to tell her brain she is safe & will not get in another accident. Also ask Jesus & pray to have less anxiety & Trust that He will keep her safe riding or driving in a car.

Thank you for sending me to this video. The first time it happened was the day I was released to leave my home after recovering from Covid. I hadn't driven in two weeks, and it was a horrible, rainy November day. I was driving to vote in the 2020 election. As I left my street, I suddenly felt lightheaded and got very dizzy. I tried to shake it off and even pulled over and tried to focus, thinking it was some weird psychological response to leaving my house after 2 weeks. I managed to pull myself together enough to make it to the high school to vote. Before I left, I sat and sort of meditated for a few minutes. It didn't help much, but I was able to make it home in one piece. It was a week later that I returned to work. I was driving on roads I've been driving for 6 years. It happened again. I even got double vision. It scared me so much that I immediately went to the doctor right after work. He diagnosed me with vertigo - post Covid and gave me exercises to do at home, which I did faithfully. Somehow, I knew it wasn't isolated to my ears as my vision was way off. I started a morning mantra when I started the car that I learned from Abraham Hicks. I would say, "Safe and Easy." Repeating this every day gave me more confidence but did not help a lot. I started rolling my head around, turning my head far left and far right, and then up and down. It has helped some, thank goodness, but not completely. This week I started incorporating my hands and feet lol I know it sounds funny, but it seems to be helping.
Also if I crack my window and can hear the noises outside, it seems to help too.

    Dr. Yonit,
I have had a fear of driving for 30 years and now I’m 46. I never really understood why I did not want to drive as a teenager. But now I believe the dizzy spells I experienced in my teens spooked me. Underwent a battery of tests and found nothing but I developed an unconscious fear of driving and roads.

Omg!! This just gave me the answers to a major issue I have riding in vehicle. When I see traffic stopping and the driver doesn’t stop when I expect them to, I instantly get dizzy and nauseous. Same thing with starting to move, or if they start and stop quick 🤢 I hate riding with other people but sometimes I have to and this is so difficult for me. This also caused a lot of unnecessary arguments with my ex husband 🙄

Watching this video yesterday inspired me today to try to relax and lay down during a very tedious car trip, starting right off with a horrible traffic jam full of buses and trailers. I was able to control my panic, just experiencing my over-stimulation with all the stop-and-go movement, vehicles passing by, loud noises, vibration. It was tough and very scary, but just that. Once I got moving again I was able to celebrate that I didn't panic and looking forward to face my senses in this friendlier way, different than just going through it getting frustrated and agitated like I did before. The brain finds new ways to alert you from imminent danger, but it's a false alarm. Every time. I wish strength and love to all suffering from these types of conditions and thank you for your incredible work Dr. Yonit.

This was good. Thanks for the info.
However I thought we would learn what to do when it happens.
I wear a hat and sun glasses to not watch the movement. Head down and play solitary.. Less dizzyness when I get out.
I now do not take day trips, which was a part of my life.

Hi Georgeanna, thank you for the feedback. My experience is that the best way to mitigate the issues while driving other is to deal with the source, which is danger mode in the brain. I have not found that many other mitigation techniques (breathing, physiological stress reduction, polarized glasses) help people consistently. That said, I’m sure people reading the comments would love to hear anything that has helped you!

I feel worse with movement. It is ok for the first 5-10 mins of walking or driving and then symptoms ramp up. I’m at my best when sat still. I don’t get swaying (sometimes a very minor few seconds of bobbing) but I do get these random head wooshes/rushes and my brain just feels so disorientated randomly when I’m still. Symptoms are gone almost completely when laying down!

Hi Brooke, sounds like you have a mix of all of them- totally typical with neural circuit dizziness. Exercises can help with issues standing and visual issues. You can find some here ua-cam.com/video/MsWYyDWuu_s/v-deo.html and in my free course thesteadycoach.com/free-course. That said, as I discuss in this video, I typically don’t give my clients exercises. I get more mileage out of helping them with stress and emotions.

I fluctuate between pattern 1 and pattern 3. One consistency for me is I feel my absolute worst at a red light. Feels like I'm being pushed or pulled. I feel trapped alot in life, so I think this may be the red light connection.

3 years ago I had a traumatic childbirth where the doctor did not listen to me and everything went down hill during the birth to me also haemorrhaging afterwards. I felt so scared and out of control like I was going to die. I knew something was wrong all along but no one would listen to me. This was my 6th child. I have had vestibular symptoms from that moment on. I have been to neurologists and doctors and they can’t find anything. They tell me it’s silent migraine. Could I have suffered ptsd from this traumatic experience and this be the cause of my symptoms still today.

VRT exercises might be a good idea here if you have not yet tried them. That can help your brain learn to filter out extraneous information. That said, I have worked with many who did no exercises and whose symptoms reduced via stress reductions/ emotional awareness techniques.

Im so glad you have a video for this. My vestibular physical therapy is about a 20 minute drive away (so 40 minutes total time driving). Im totally fine driving there, but as soon as i come to a complete stop, my rocking forward/back kicks in really strong (stronger than when i initially got in the car). Then walking in i feel like im drunk or very unsteady. It settles back down to my baseline of rocking (which is all day but at a lower intensity) after a little while (maybe 10 to 15 minutes). I was diagnosed with pppd, but i feel like it is more mdds? Will VRT probably not help much with my issues then? Should I just focus more on the anxiety issues/fear? I am able to walk mostly okay (and have been trying to do that daily), but do still feel symptoms at times while walking. Im scared that driving all the way to physical therapy and back is just reinforcing my main problem plus causing fear/stress. I also dont feel like the VRT is really helping with my constant rocking so far either as i feel worse just sitting.

Hi Amanda, if you're afraid of movement and have lots of movement provoked symptoms, VRT can help. If not, focus on the anxiety issues and fear! With my clients, I rarely use VRT, but it does have its place.

I get hell dizzy while driving and sometimes when the dizziness is too much i often feel disconnected with the surroundings, it feels as if I’m drunk.
I feel my dizziness only while in a car or while I’m in a rich complex visual stimuli also I remember this started 3 months back when i had a strong panic attack and dizziness while driving.
Kindly recommend which VRT exercises should i be doing on regular basis to reduce visual dependency as we don’t have good Physio here.

And I’m basically patterns 1 or 2, all the time. But if I’m driving my symptoms usually stay the same unless I have to look around a lot like if I’m following the GPS on my phone and forget to clip it up so I’m looking down and up over and over again. That’s no bueno, immediate dizziness. I also can’t look back in the car, like looking towards the backseat or out the back window. And my dizziness started when I got severe whiplash, I got rear ended, saw it coming in my rear view mirror so I tensed up and definitely have anxiety about getting rear ended again. If we stop quickly and I see traffic coming behind us, I get a surge of adrenaline and usually start to feel dizzy and sick. Wow, I always knew that happened but I never thought the dizziness is actually connected to the nervous system. Excellent video! Thank you!!

Omg finally someone knows and talk about this! I believe I was traumatized after feeling pull in from a big truck while driving a very small light weight car, I was under such a strong fear, after that day, I can not drive in a highway (always drove high speed with no problem at all). Now if I ever by mistake jump in a high way I have to pull over right away, as I feel I lose balance and control of the car. I truly feel compression in the back of my head, my legs will shake, and I just can’t continue to drive. I will like to know what can I do to reverse this trauma or brain damage…thank you!

    • @TheSteadyCoach

Ugh, I'm sorry you've been told it's in your head, I want to assure you that you are NOT making it up. That said, it is a prediction error being generated by your nervous system, so my general approach is to see what else might be causing your nervous system to be in high alert. The external trigger (driving) might be related to what's bothering you, but sometimes it's not- stress at work, conflicts at home, etc.- these can all cause the brain to be extra sensitive and make these kinds of errors.

Absolutely. Your brain is working extra hard to process information- this leads to fatigue. It is VERY interesting that this is inconsistent between work and having fun. Many times this is because you are stressed out about work, holding your breath, and being tense.

I can drive like Rambo on the city streets but once on the highway I feel like the “ where’s the beef “ lady in the movie Moving Violations

I feel like I’m gonna faint when driving on the highway at night . If the road is really smooth I feel like I’m gonna slide out of control . I feel like I’m shrinking and the view in front of me is getting huge

I'm sorry you're going through that, that sounds like what a lot of people here describe.
